Subject: We interrupt your regularly scheduled Lit board, so I can squee!

I went to a Scottish festival today! It was my first one, and I'm so excited!

I went to Memphis yesterday to see the movie "It Might Get Loud," starring my very own Jimmy (and some other guys...LOL! It was Jack White *swoon* and The Edge from U2), and stayed with Chelle in her new apartment. She went with me to the movie, btw, and came away telling me she now knows why I "like" Jimmy so much. *G*

Anyway.

My older daughter, Laurel, took her daughter, Mackenzie, to the U of M football game today, while I took care of the baby. When they returned from the game, Laurel said there was a Scottish festival in town, and wondered if I wanted to go. Ha. So we rounded up the kids, grabbed Chelle, and took off. It was a small festival, a fund-raiser for a local Presbyterian church, but it was very well done. Several clans had tents, including the Frasers. One of the Frasers let Mackenzie hold a sword, and a targe. She loved it! Unfortunately, Clan MacKenzie wasn't in attendance, but we found a photo of their tartan, and she was content with that. We loved the closing ceremony with the bagpipes and drums! After we left, I told Mackenzie some of her ancestors used to dress like that, and use swords and such, and one of them was King of Scotland. (Actually more than one, but she's only five, and I didn't want to confuse her too badly. *G*) I'm so glad we got to go!

A couple of funny things happened there: They were holding sheep herding competitions, and we paused to watch those amazing dogs for a time. Later, we were in the children's area, and Mackenzie was operating a trebuchet (nothing like flinging stuff to keep a kid occupied) when we noticed a flock of sheep running down the street next to us, followed by a number of excited dogs and people. The sheep had gotten loose, so they sent the dogs after them. I don't know if they ever rounded them up or not! Laurel commented that it's not every day you see a flock of sheep running down a Memphis street. The second funny thing was Mackenzie. We'd been there at least an hour, maybe more, and she suddenly turned to me and said, "Mimi, why is that man wearing a skirt?" After we'd smothered our laughter, we tried to explain kilts, and told her men do wear them. She still looked skeptical, but I thought it was funny it took her so long to notice them.

So there's the tale of my first Scottish festival. What a great weekend -- Jimmy Page on the big screen, and men in kilts. Y'all, it just doesn't get any better than that!!

We now return you to your regularly scheduled programming...

They are loads of fun, aren't they? I've been to a couple and enjoyed myself immensely. There's a big one here every year and hopefully I'll make it this year. When you see all the clan tents laid out, you notice things once you've learned a bit about Scottish history; the biggest of which I think is that the Campbell tent and the MacDonald tent will NEVER be anywhere close to one another, usually across the grounds.

I should look up when the next one happens...
So Glad you all had such fun!

I can't remember if the Campbells or MacDonalds were there, but Laurel took photos of the tents, so I'll check to see if they were, and if so, how far away they were from each other! *G*

Laurel's camera is in the shop, so she put her memory card in my camera and used it, so she has all the photos. But she called tonight, and said she inadvertently got a shot of the sheep running down the street!

There's a huge Scottish festival in Batesville, Arkansas every April, at Lyon College. DH and I have planned to go for years, but something always comes up, and we never have. But the girls and I made a pact that we will ALL go in April. Laurel's DH is already kidding her about trying to find Jamie Fraser in Arkansas. LOL

[> what a dream -- dea, 14:47:51 10/02/09 Fri

just been to the IMGL website. mate, that's what my life would have been if i had taken the other road. i would be The Edge now, playing with Jimmy Page. in my other life i would have chosen to study the electric guitar instead of classical. i would not have ruined my hands learning the wrong way. i would feel no pain. i would be able to give birth to the music i hear in my head. i would be the first great hard rock female guitar player in the world. that’s what i wanted to be at 16. i probably am in some parallel existence... but i’m happy enough with seeing Jimmy Page alive and kicking with that beautiful white hair, The Edge changing guitars 23 times in one show and Jack White, though i do not like him in particular, i agree he’s hugely talented, and impressive as an actor. contented with sitting in the audience and being moved. thanks for sharing, again!

It's such a wonderful documentary. I took my youngest DD with me (she's 23), and even though she's not a fan of the guitar the way I am, she still loved this film. The contrasts between the three guitarists were juxtaposed against how similar they all are. The best parts (for me) were when the three of them were together, just jamming, learning each others' songs, playing old favorites from other bands, and just demostrating the way they like to play. There was one scene where Jack White was playing something (I can't for the life of me remember what it was!), and it was funny watching both Jimmy and The Edge. The Edge was very intense, staring at Jack's fingers, trying to get just exactly how he fingered each note. Jimmy, on the other hand, watched Jack for about 15 seconds, then joined right in. He tended to watch Jack's face just as much as he watched his hands. To me, it really played up how much The Edge is all about the technical side of things, while Jimmy is more about the feel of the music. All three men are so talented, and I'd give anything to see this again, but it only played one night here, and won't be showing anywhere within a day's drive of me again. Can't wait til it comes out on DVD!

(Oh! Forgot to add two of my favorite quotes from the movie! Both are from Jimmy (of course). One was in the very beginning, where he was describing the way he feels about the guitar: "It's like a woman, you know? And you stroke it like a woman." I almost swooned. *G* The second was where he was describing the way Stairway to Heaven builds up in intensity: "It just keeps building and building, like an orgasm." I like the way he thinks! *G*)
