Hello Terry,
I just saw your message posted from Sept of this year re: the 8th Photo Squadron, 6th Recon Group, SWPA. My wife's uncle, Capt. Sheldon Hallett was also a P-38 Lightning (F5-A photo recon version of the P-38). I've been researching this squadron and recently received his MARC (Missing Air Crew Report)from the U.S National Archives Administration. The report includes a 'Description of Circumstances Pertaining to Missing Aircraft' written by the last witness of the missing aircraft. In this case it was the pilot of the 2nd plane on the two plane patrol, 1st Lt. Hewitt H. Clark who describes the location of the incident on Feb. 29th, 1944 as being about 35 miles off the north coast of New Guinea between But Airdrome and enemy occupied Tadji airstrip where seven enemy aircraft(Zekes)attacked their patrol shooting down Hallett's plane. 1st Lt. Clark made it safely back to the airbase at Nadzab to fill out the report.
Your Father probably knew Capt. Sheldon Hallett and 1st Lt. Hewitt Clark ?.
A great book on the history of the 8th PRS was written in 1999, 'The Eightballers: Eyes of the Fifth Airforce'.
Regards, Steve Berg
