Subject: I've read the comments, and I too am hoping something was taken out of context, b/c what I've read it is a pretty arrogant IMHO statement. That's not saying DJE is arrogant but the statement IMHO was....that's why I'm wondering if there's more to it....As for the rest, when JAG was on, both CB & DJE were featured prominently on the entertainment shows...if CB or someone else had made those type of comments, you bet there would be an uproar, & rightly so. It was a team effort, they all carried the show for 9+ seasons on CBS, it wasn't just one man's load....
In reply to: Meg 's message, "I didn't see the profile, but depending on how he worded it, maybe he just meant in reference to the media spotlight? Because there was more media spotlight on him than any other cast member during the show's run. Maybe there was a lot of the media holding him accountable as to how the show did, and not thinking about the rest of the cast." on 19:38:28 08/24/06 Thu

[> [> [> CB was just as much in the spotlight and interviews if not more at times. Also in all the promos CB was included in them along with DJE. Jag had a great ensemble cast and wouldn't have made it without them or the creative team. It also was a Live interview and came right from his mouth, not on written paper, so you can't misquote him. If CB would have said something like that she would have been lambasted and served up as a sacrifice. He's done stuff like this before and he'll do it again, making excuses for him doesn't justify it or make him look good at all. -- afan, 09:42:55 08/25/06 Fri

[> [> [> [> That makes sense, but what about the reviews when JAG was on? Like if JAG dropped in ratings one week, did episode critiques seem to focus more on stuff in relation to DJE/Harm, or was there a mix? I know for me personally, when most of the season had Harm heavily featured and then they'd go do an ep with like four Harm scenes (and usually something light, not a case story-line, like the one with his stolen corvette), it didn't even feel like I was watching the same series. Plus, CBS cancelled the series shortly after DJE chose not to renew his contract. (inside) -- Meg, 21:27:32 08/25/06 Fri

Now I don't know if his action had any bearing on their decision or not, but I'd find it hard to believe it wasn't at least a small factor. So, anybody who worked on the show and who really knew it knew that it couldn't be done without anybody. But on paper, it's like the emphasis is being put on one character and one actor's actions. There was a gymnastics meet where the team's top athlete had a major error and comments were made that it was that athlete who'd cost them the medal, and a teammate said "Well, you can also argue that if three of us hadn't taken a step, it wouldn't have happened either."

Anyway, maybe it was less of a "I'm the one who was responsible for the show's success," and simply more of a "It's going to be nice to not be the one in the spotlight this time."

Having read so much where the cast seemed to really get along so well, this statement just seems incongruent. That's why I keep thinking there must have been something else behind it, but I could be wrong.

[> [> [> [> [> CBS did not cancel JAG b/c of the DJE situation.....there were many many factors involved, & in fact that's why the final episode appeared to have been thrown together b/c CBS dangled the renewal carrott in front of TPTB noses. JAG's ratings had taken a consistent slide since being moved to Friday nights....And if you want to blame the S10 slide then blame it on the fact that JMJ was gone LOL! Inside... -- Jennifer, 22:18:09 08/25/06 Fri

JAG was an expensive show to produce....it cost around 2 million per ep to produce the show...DJE's salary was about 1/6th of that, and it was only garnering a small profit (when compared to other shows) margin for CBS....

The network gave TPTB the chance to try and bring up the ratings with a younger crowd, and probably something along the lines of "cut your costs" for any kind of renewal.

When compared to the shows that replaced JAG on Fridays, Threshold and Close To Home, they have done NO better ratings wise than JAG did.....but they were less expensive shows to produce which garnered more profits.

Sure its all about money....as for the eps and ratings you can factor in so many items....what time of year, what it was up against, was it pre-empted in some markets for sports specials and so on.....Maybe to you it wasn't the same show, but I enjoyed all the cast and loved episodes where Mac, Bud, AJ, Sturgis were featured. It was still JAG to me, but I know others have a varying opinion. Don't forget some of the Harm-lite eps you reference were because DJE wanted to DIRECT and DB gave him that opportunity....

JAG wasn't renewed solely b/c DJE's contract was up.....if that were the case, the network would've announced in January or earlier that the this was the last season, when it was known that DJE wouldn't be coming back...instead the network gave TPTB the chance, and didn't officially announce until like 3 weeks before the final ep aired, which is why IMHO we got so much Vic and others in the finale, instead of focusing on Mac & Harm...but I'm okay with the ending, because to me it ended with Mac & Harm together, happy at last.

The statement was just uncalled for and really insulting to the rest of the cast....every single one of them contributed and carried a burden, which is why the show was successful for the 9 years on CBS (you can't say it was successful on NBC because it didn't even last a full season before being yanked)....it was a team effort...a team load, not just one person.
