I think those who are not happy with the direction Gina has taken Janeway are missing the point; Janeway has changed, as people must; otherwise they do not learn and grow.

In previous episodes Janeway was capable of making decisions without hesitation, now she is unable to do so without thinking of her family. Hesitation of any kind does not a good Captain make.

To use the firefighter analogy, yes they are trained to think of the people they are to rescue as family and that makes them more successful. However, when they can no longer do that, despite their training, that makes them a liability and should not continue in that line of work. The same principal applies in the case of a Federation captain.

As pointed out the situation was different in the above mentioned episode. It was not really life threatening yet she was prepared to 'decide' in favor of her 'family.' Imagine if it were more serious; she's showing that she is no longer the same Janeway of old. She has changed/evolved. She now considers her family more important than her career/ship.

Love can be both a strength and a weakness. It can make you fight more for what you love, thus making you stronger, but it can also be attacked/taken away/killed making it a weakness as well. It's all in the perspective, but it can be both.

Gina has tried to get across to readers that Captain Janeway has grown/matured/evolved in her thinking/beliefs. Family is more important and she cannot keep this fact from influencing the decisions she must make if she is to remain a successful captain.

Other 'successful' captains did not have strong family ties/concerns to influence their decisions. They did not hesitate when they had to make the tough decisions. Janeway used to be the same; she no longer is capable of that type of thinking thus making her not the same caliber of captain.

That does not take anything away from her previous career achievements as a captain, but it does show that at this point in time she is not the same type of captain.

Tho I am not happy to have the series end I can understand Gina's decision and the thought process behind it.

It's all in your perspective. Some see it as love being a weakness. I see it as love putting things into perspective and Janeway concluding that love/family is more important. That to me is a strength not a weakness.

I really wished to see some of Kathryn's and Seven's home life together to see how they'd adapt to the huge changes involved in starting a family and adjusting to life outside life on a starship, but if the desire is not there I can see how not forcing it would be better.

Tho hopefully, possibly, Gina can entertain the thought of seeing how other writers see this side to their lives. Or possibly have a smaller series (Horizon or Sunset) where we can occasionally see snippets of their home life (pregnancy, adjustment to life away from a starship, etc). Hope springs eternal. ::smile::

My thanks to Gina for all she's contributed over the years, and my condolences on her recent loss.

Chris.
