Subject: Favorite Ep

Okay, I need to get into the Voyager mood. I ordered a couple of books off Amazon written by Peter David that has Janeway and Seven in them (and apparently, a wee bit of subtext) and I'm watching some old eps.

So, my favorite ep is still Prey. Just for the sparks and the violation of personal space all over the place.

working by the glow of computer screens
defiant Borg refusing to go to earth
stubborn Captain refusing to let her go
imprisoned on Arturis' ship
Janeway's warm fingers so close
to Seven's...um...implant

Hope and Fear

Favorite is probably Infinite Regress. You've got the beginning of Naomi and Seven's friendship. Great acting with Seven's many personalities (the Ferengi was a hoot). Last but not least Janeway wiping away tears of concern for Seven and being there in sickbay when she wakes up.

Also loved Repentence and of course Imperfection.

Favorite: 'Timeless.' Yeah I know that's not what you're looking for... but it's just such a great episode. Not too much Seven and limited Janeway, but good Janeway when it's there.

Favorite Janeway/Seven: this is really a toss-up between 'Hope and Fear' and 'Drone.' Even though there's more interaction (as I recall) in the former, I'd go with the latter because of the intensity of the interactions.

Favorite Janeway/Seven, for subtext: 'Dark Frontier' without question. When Janeway looks up at the empty alcove, when Janeway screams, "I'm not leaving without you!" and when Seven defies the Queen and tells Janeway what to shoot... fantastic episode. And the tone of Janeway's voice when she says "*never* abandon a member of your crew" is just perfect.

Anyway, on a personal note, I'm so very delighted that you're going to start writing this series again, and I'm eagerly looking forward to as many more installments as you're willing to write. We all love you and we're all so very sorry about your mother. God bless, Gina.

I can’t say that have one favorite episode but I like The Omega Directive and Infinite Regress the most, I think they show what each is willing to sacrifice for the other

This is tough for me, I believe my absolute favorite Seven episode is Relativity. Besides the fact that we get Seven in a Starfleet Uniform (sigh), you also get to see her push herself beyond her personal limits like you know she would in order to ensure the survival of her "collective."

However, Equinox I & II are my favorite Janeway episodes. These two episodes brought out a side of Janeway that really affirmed for me how truly human and fragile she was at that point in their journey. It painted a picture of her that has (as far as I can tell fanfiction wise) rarely been explored. I don't think most authors are comfortable taking her there, because if they do, it can't be a quick fix story where she hits bottom and suddenly pops back up, they would have to leave her there long enough for it to really resonate.

Ok nuff pontificating!

Mine is Imperfection...Janeway is desperate to find a way to save Seven, perfectly willing to throw her principles out an airlock if necessary. And that scene in Astrometrics...leg hiked up on the railing like some cowboy, telling Seven she's gonna take her home with her when they return to earth.

I think I loved "Counterpoint" with Janeway and the one that comes second best to me is "Deathwish" with the Q that wanted to die. It really said what Star Trek was all about if you had followed the previous series. Those two stand out in my mind the most.

After getting over the disappointment of what could of and should of been in terms of character development, continuality and all the things that I would of loved to see in terms of quality writing for Voyager, my favorite eps were Drone, Dark Frontier and parts of End Game.

I am a fan that has become a wee-bit more critical of the writing quality from an entertainment franchise that has had some 40 years to create perfection. (warning; personal editorial comments ahead :0) It’s been a long standing epidemic in the Star Trek television universe that character development rarely reaches beyond skin deep. DS9 was showing signs of good character development and eventually, IMHO did the best job of any Trek series regarding character development. Therefore, with Voyager premiering after DS9 "honeymoon years" my expectations were high to see well-developed character writing. That didn’t materialize and the opportunity was tossed away on a loyal fan base that the tv producers bet would continue to drink from the well, no matter how bitter the water. The series did keep my interest (I did drink from the well) in hopes of seeing a properly executed television series. As the series moved into season six and seven, there were only a few shining moments of writing excellence. I continue to be thankful for the few exceptional fanfic writers, like you (Gina), who – among other things - capture the essences of well-developed characters… Thank you

I can't narrow it down to one :-)

Some of my favourites include, The Raven, The Killing Game, Dark Frontier and Imperfection.

All, imo, have great J/7 moments :-)

Lorri, I agree. DS9 was probably the best written Star Trek series...especially Season 4 onwards when they stopped being episodic and started to really explore their characerters. They did a brilliant job IMHO.

In Voyager, the Seven episodes I really liked are Dark Frontier, Drone and Scorpion. Out of the non-Seven episodes, I liked Timeless, Endgame, Remember, and Future's End. I have included the last because it captures the essence of why many of us (or maybe just me :)) like Star Trek. The episode at several times points out how people are living their own little lives today; the astonomist lady tells Paris that he seems to care about something bigger than himself. Like he is not just living his own small life. He asks if that is so unusual and she says Yes. It is. Harding says he doesn't care if the future obliterates as long as he can make the next best computer. Janeway replies that in her time no one would even dream of doing something as horrific as what Harding is willing to do. Now THAT is the kind of future I hope for!

hmmm... fave episode... really difficult to narrow it down to one.

For J/7 content alone it would be Prey (great tension) Hope and Fear (great tension and nice scene in the brig - see below), Imperfection (sigh), Child's Play (great angst, tension and concern), Voyager Conspiracy (for the scene in the shuttle - why did they beam out though?), Omega Directive (nice chats especially in front of the fire) and Dark Frontier.

Also Latent Image (great visuals and Janeway listens to 7), Drone (but mainly because i like One)... nope, list is getting too long.

I've been reading a book, Star Trek Action, which is about the creating and shooting of scenes from Voyager, DS9 and ST:Insurrection.

For Voyager they had Hope and Fear. They had the idea of the quantum slipstream and they wanted the episode to be around j/7. Some first ideas were that during slipstream travel Seven suffers implant failure and the Doc says if they go on she'll die. Janeway decides to get out of the slipstream, Seven argues against it and wants them to carry on regardless - it was considered too close to 'One'. an alternative was that an alien ship attacks Voyager in the slipstream because it's their space, Voyager wins the battle. However, Voyager is no longer able to stay in the slipstream "so Seven of Nine suggests that we take the gleaming new alien ship and proceed. The conflict between Janeway and Seven ignites ... Eventually 7 of 9 does take command of the alien vessel. But something goes awry in Act 5. Capt. Janeway and "Captain" Seven find themselves face-to-face in a dangerous situation. Ultimately, Janeway is proven right. she beats Seven at their "game" once again."

anyway, the story goes through quite a few changes but this is a paragraph i rather like:

"February 3 1998
In the wee hours of the morning in the company of his own thoughts, Braga (Brannon Braga), is able to focus on what he wants. An epsiode that serves as a payoff to the themes of the entire fourth season. "I wanted to do a story about Janeway and Seven that would somehow recap their relationship over the past year and take it a step further," he says. "A storyline that showed there were consequences to Janeway's making a deal with the Borg, and to bringing in Seven of Nine. I wanted it to be a bitter-suite retrospective of Season four and yet a good action story."

Braga works out the structure and calls Joe Menosky, his collaborator on the episode. "we did the beats over the phone. Our breakthrough was when we decided that Janeway and Seven shouldn't be on different ships fighting each other. That's artificial. We were straining to do something that never would be believable. They should be working together. After that, we just came up with ideas right and left."

Thw two men quickly come to a decision about which ideas from the beat session (story ideas mtg) will remain. Vengeance remains the alien's motive. The ruse concept is fleshed out, and a scene is constructed where the alien springs a trap. Janeway and Seven get thrown into the brig together. "They would have to get close," says Braga. "Janeway would have to tweak Seven's implants - to touch her." He smiles. "We liked that image."

just thought it was interesting.. sorry for the long message. :-)

I forgot to add Think Tank.. with the chit chats between janeway and seven over whether she should leave and janeway showing seven off to the think tank.

Oh, definitely Think Tank, if only for the bit that looks like a J/7 kiss in the lift! No really, my personal favorite ep is Dark Frontier. I just love it when 7 says please.

I agree, Lorri. DS9 was probably the best written series; especially after Season 4 when they stopped being episodic and actually started exploring their characters. It was awesome!

In Voyager, I liked Dark Frontier, Drone, and The Killing Game. Among the non-Seven episodes, I liked Timeless, Endgame and Future's End. I liked the last mostly because it really brought out one of the main reasons why I watch Star Trek. For instance, the astronomist girl tells Tom that it seems he cares about something bigger than himself. He asks whether that is so unusual and she says yes, it is. Harding is willing to blow up the future just so he can invent the next best computer to which Janeway says that no one in her time can even imagine doing something as horrid as that. Now THAT is the kind of future I hope for! And why I love Star Trek!

Why, thank you Julia for agreeing with me two times in a row! I appreciate your repeat support {:0) Now if I can just get people in my real life to follow your example, life would be a bowl of cherries.

P.S. Don't feel too bad about posting twice. It happens to the best of us.... been there, done that. ~ cheers

Gina, I was wondering... I love your JB and Millenium series and I'd love it if you would continue them for as long as you or I live, but have you ever thought of switching to the "darkside" (T/7) if only for a change of pace? Just curious.

No, I don't enjoy reading 'dark side' T/7 so I'd never write it. I only write what I enjoy reading.

First of all, I have to tell you I am on 14 days leave, and I am trully enjoying the freedom. I can not believe I take for granted things like internet, phones ans a comfortable bed. I am returning to Iraq tomorrow, but I have downloaded the millenniun series which will keep me occupied until we return to the States.

I didnt want to change the subject, so to tell you the truth, my favorite episodes involve time travel and borgs, so, the last Voyager episode is my favorite.

My least fav are the ones where Seven is trying to get into a relationship with Chakotay... so unreal, being that the Just Between and Millennum are more real to me than those eps.

I don't have a single favorite episode, all my favs are any time janeway & seven interact. There always seems to be an under current between them, but then I may just be looking very hard for it(smirk)
