Amen to Jane Fletcher--bought the Lyremouth books on a whim and it really paid off, though I consider her work more fantasy than sci-fi.
Now I will date myself and claim that for me one the best sci-fi classics is "Daughters of a Coral Dawn" by Katherine Forrest. Nothing good in there about men, but a great story...

I think Karin Kallmaker writes pretty good sci-fi/fantasy... under the pseudonym Laura Adams.

And Fyrequeene as already mentioned Katherine V Forrest's 'Daughters of a Coral Dawn' which is now a trilogy including, 'Daughters of an Amber Moon' and 'Daughters of an Emerald Dusk'... very good though perhaps more downbeat towards the end.

'Daughter's of a Coral Dawn' is my all time favorite. I was extremely disappointed in the two sequels. The charecters lacked depth and the chemistry between them was not there. The last book, with the way communication was done with the wild women, was just too weird and creepy. Just my take. Gun Brooke also writes good sci-fi, as is evident in her 'Protector of the Realm'. I have ordered her sequel and it should get here soon.
