Subject: You miss the point, as usual......(inside)
In reply to: Allentown 's message, "Re: I agree with YOU, MS...I do BELIEVE that the Shootout was a...(inside)" on 13:09:59 01/29/02 Tue

My point is this: In seasons past, under Skip, it seemed to me and my conversations with the MANY Xavier friends and grads I know (plenty of them) that the Shootout was THE GAME FOR XAVIER. UC would lose and usually everyone would write them off and they would come back with a vengeance after losing (wake-up call) and finish the season strong and make the NCAA Tournament and win one game or two. Meanwhile Xavier would win the Shootout, tank the rest of the season and excuse their bid to the NIT by saying, "yeah, but we beat UC".

Your friends say they don't care, my Xavier friends have always put alot of stock in that game.....your word vs. mine. Your Xavier friends vs. my friends, and I have plenty, not to mention my little brother goes to Xavier.

BUT, my post was meant to be a compliment towards the Xavier program and fans. How? My point is: It appears that the Thad Matta regime has brought an attitude that says Xavier isn't the little school on the block in the City of Cincinnati, the A-10, and all of the NCAA. Skip, Pete, etc...always played up the David vs. Goliath scenario and it was pathetic.

Thad Matta reminds me of Mark Few (spelling?) of Gonzaga. He believes they can get it done and can do great things. He believes that Xavier can be a more than just an occasional contender in the A-10. He sees the big picture where Skip saw an upset here or an upset there. Matta sees the season as a tune-up for the postseason.

In years past, I never saw that attitude. And based on Xavier's postseason appearances and performance, they had no reason to believe.

You can't convince me otherwise and since you live outside the city, you have no way of knowing the prevailing attitude that goes on here. I hang with alot of Xavier fans and I am the Lone Ranger (being a UC fan) but they have always hung their hat on beating UC BECAUSE AND ONLY BECAUSE they had no hope of really accomplishing much more in their season....and my Xavier friends and I have had this exact conversation and they agree with me. THAT HAS ALL CHANGED WITH MATTA AND I SINCERELY MEAN THAT AS A COMPLIMENT. GOOD LUCK ON THE REST OF YOUR SEASON.
