Murray did a lot of good things for the campus. I would place the blame from 1980 through 1988. Murray had more important things to do than worry about bball - like saving the University from discreditation and bankruptcy. It is what it is. I'd rather have a solvent university and a poor bball program, than a great bball program and the university in bankruptcy.         That's insolvency. It *is* a fair point, though, to be critical of Murray during his last three or so years after the University was back on its feet. Hiring some of the coaches, and the lack of resources (i.e. no cell phone for the coaches), was embarrassing.         We don't disagree about that. But Dr. Murray certainly could've begun to address the problems by 1. changing ADs and 2. putting some of the big money that was being raised towards the program. Again, don't misunderstand, I am not knocking Dr. Murray or his accomplishments, I am simply saying that he COULD have done something to fix the basketball program, and didn't.         I agree - but only during the past 3 - 4 years of his term. We owe him a lot though. Does anyone know if Dougherty is a basketball fan? When I lived in Charlotte, he took the local alums to a game against Charlotte. I mentioned Danny Nee (who was our coach at the time) and he was silent. I knew Nee was toast!         And who was the president of the university during your days El Duque? It is still relevant. The B-ball program may have had the record you built your pride on, but what happened after that? The admission requirements hit their lowest from '78 to '94. What does that say about anyone who attended the university during that two decades and a half? Dr. Murray helped build DU beyond any on the lackies in the last 30 years. Dr. D is the rebuild the bball program pres. He isn't the master fundraiser/rebuilder Murray was.         Relevant: When Fr. Mac and Fr. Nesti were pres. they could have done a better job raising money so we could have hired a better AD during the Murray years. Murray was interested in increasing our endowement. The Murray years far exceeded Fr. Mac and Fr. Nesti. Its easy to be a monday morning college president. Your pride for DU is a beautiful thing.         ED and others involved in this debate about Dr.Murray vs. Dr. D - it's a somewhat silly debate, because both sides have major arguments which appear to be correct. Dr. Murray saved the University, Dr. D appears to be making a commitment to save the BB program. Saving the University had to come first, although it is true, nothwithstanding his love for college BB, Dr. M did little for the BB program. I don't think he understood or valued the importance of the BB program. But, without him, Dr. D might not even have a program to save. Both deserve credit for their contributions.
