As you all know very well this mess started before Leland left town and Jimmy saw the writing on the wall - went south instead and won a world series. Throw in Bonifay and Littlefield, who gave away Aramis, paid 10 mill for a washed up pitcher and brought in the likes of Derek Bell, a washed up Joker and the washed Cub outfielder. The crowning achievement of all though was Bonifay who drafted the Texas A&M QB who never got above Lynchburg, while the Red Sox with the very next pick selected a guy named Nomar Garciaparra. The 2 worst GMs since Bowen, the Reds GM who single handedly dissembled the Big Red Machine in Cincy.

- Agreed A83. The worst couple comments I've seen were comments like (not exact quotes) "We need to have the core of a competitive team before we will spend money" and "For us to increase payroll, we need to get more people out to the ballpark." So, the Pirates will only spend money when they'll be competitive and have a core of players (which may never happen). Worse, they need MORE people to buy an inferior product to make it competitive. You indeed need to have a strong core of home grown players before you can add a few vets who might make the difference in a close race.     - You are banking on Tabata and Alvarez being part of the core when they have played zero professional innings. Moreover, the free agent to try to sign this year for the Pirates would be Rick Ankiel. He can play all 3 OF positions, including RF where we desperately need a big arm and bat.     - It's true difference-making players won't come here, but some stop-gaps are needed until the prospects are ready. There's no left-handed relief, 2nd base and SS are highly questionable, as is either RF/1st base, whichever Jones is not playing.
