You are banking on Tabata and Alvarez being part of the core when they have played zero professional innings. Moreover, the free agent to try to sign this year for the Pirates would be Rick Ankiel. It's true difference-making players won't come here, but some stop-gaps are needed until the prospects are ready. There's no left-handed relief, 2nd base and SS are highly questionable, as is either RF/1st base, whichever Jones is not playing. duq81, I am not proposing that they go out and throw money at high priced free agents (none will come here anyway). The dismantling of the scouting & farm system that was done in late early 00s to save money and the unwillingness of the organization to draft and sign the best prospects available ---that blame rests 100% with the Nutting family.
