Subject: The only way big names will come here is if you overpay, and even then maybe not. Ok, fine. Lets just go with a pipe dream here and look at what could maybe sometime happen...
In reply to: duq81 's message, "Well, local buyers weren't exactly lining up to buy the Bucs when they were on sale. There are plenty of potential Jim Balsillies out there, who will be glad to move the team out of town. Portland Pirates maybe. You have to give the current guys five years to do their job. I agree we need some gap fillers, but no Pat Meares or Derek Bells please." on Thursday, October 08, 01:10:24pm

1) Move Andy LaRoche to 2nd base... keep Young in a bench role
2) Sign a 3rd baseman with legit power.
3) Keep Jones on 1st base rather than right field.
4) Sign a RF with legit power.
5) Sign one true #1 or #2 starter to anchor the rotation.

Batting Line-up:

1 McCutcheon (speed)
2 Milledge (can get on base)
3 Jones
4 3B/RF Putting them by each other
5 3B/RF ensures they get pitches
6 Cedeno
7 Laroche
8 Doumit
9 Pitcher

Potentially put Jones at 5 and move the above 4 and 5 up one spot...

All of the first 5 should get pitches, and that should at least allow some offense to take place. Doumit before the pitcher puts at least a little bit of pop on the back half of the lineup.

Yeah, I know I'm dreaming. But it would help.

10-12 million/yr apiece for these three would still keep our payroll in the lower areas that it tends to stay around. It hopefully won't end up as an Adam LaRoche-like situation, where you acquire former puzzle pieces from somewhere else who now have to be "the guy." Offensively, we can begin to rely on Cutch, Milledge, and Jones, so the two new bats will have others to rely upon.

Pitching wise, we can PROBABLY rely on Duke, Ohlendorf, and Maholm, though there'll still be growing pains. Get a legit 1 or 2 to anchor, pepper in an appropriate 5th starter, and that should help the development of the young guys.
