Only cancer victims have any idea of the mental & physical pain you have suffered and only real cyclists (as distinct from pen pushers in the media) know the agony on the long climbs. I think the French press is right that his victory is due to doping, but I think they have it backwards.

I think that this is the cleanest the Tour has been in years and Lance has shown that he is the strongest rider in a tour without drugs.

That if you strip all the riders of all drugs and have everyone on a level playing field Lance is the strongest.

You must win this Tour without complexes, only because you are the best one, this year. Don't think that french people are against you (I am french !).
Sorry, Lance, but it is easyer for me to continue in french.
Les français, à mon avis, ne sont pas les plus chauvins du monde et ils savent reconnaître les meilleurs, comme ce fut le cas pour Greg Lemmon. Mais depuis l'an dernier (affaire Virenque) les passions se sont exacerbées au point que beaucoup se sentent frustrés par la "petite forme" de ce dernier, et en veulent au monde entier de les priver de leur idole habituelle. D'autre part, il règne actuellement un climat de suspicion générale, voire de paranoia dans les instances dirigeantes du Tour de France qui rend difficile tout jugement sur les meilleurs. Il te sera nécessaire de gagner l'année prochaine aussi, et avec "panache", dans un climat devenu plus serein au fil du temps, pour conquérir définitivement le coeur des frenchies.
Je ne crois pas que la presse soit contre toi, mais je m'étonne, moi aussi, qu'un journal comme "Le Monde" autrefois considéré comme une référence de sérieux, se laisse aller au sensationnel pour vendre du papier. Je ne suis pas prêt de l'acheter maintenant.

MAN! What a surprise a few days ago to learn that LANCE ARMSTRONG is is FIRST place and is favored to champion this year's Tour!!!

You and the Post Office team are so inspirational..., I think I'll break down and buy that new bike I've been wanting. The old greaser, a vintage '85 TREK 720 touring, now has about 25,000 mi. on it (still going strong), including a "Tour de Trans-america" taken a few springs ago, lugging 50+ lbs. of luggage on the climbs.

Keep riding SMART, and know that most Frenchmen (and women) know better than to believe what they read in their local tabloids. If they can't have a Frenchman win, they'd rather an American any day!!!

I enjoyed today's stage to Pau, just like I enjoyed yesterday's stage. I love to see the yellow jersey attack. Though you wonder what the word 'defending' means, you show that you can defend and attack when you need to.
And putting monsieur Virenque on his spot by using your legs is great!! Keep on going Lance, win the Tour!! Forget about the French press: they are so chauvinistic, always been. I loved to hear you say in an interview with Mart Smeets of Dutch television that you would not use the same 'tactics' as the French press, and stay ethical and professional. You are a true sport, and more important, a great inspiration to other people. Enjoy the last stages to Paris, and i hope you have a fantastic finale on the Champs Elyséees. First off, in case you haven't heard, the UCI has confirmed that Lance had corticoids in his system. They also confirmed that it was because he had a perscription for a cream to treat some skin allergy he had. So in other words: Try as the Press may, Lance has done NOTHING wrong!

Now, is Lance winning the Tour that unbelievable? Don't get me wrong, I'm as psyched as anyone, and I don't mean to take anything away from his performance. But the press is trying to say that drugs are the only explenation for this performance.

Let me point out a couple things, that the press seems to ignore. The 99 Tour has been wide open without Marco, Jan and Bobby. Secondly, Lance has finally focused on The Tour instead of the classics and worlds. Third, it would be a MUCH closer race had Zulle not crashed in Stage 2. He's lighter then before and therefore climbing better.

I have also heard another explanation for his performance. I'm no doctor, but it makes sense to me. I've heard that for most, or perhaps all, of Lance's pro career he had cancer and therefore it must have effected his previous performances. Now that he's cancer free (THANK GOD)he can perform to his full potential.

Ok, now for the commen sense part. The man almost died for God's sake, why would he dump his body with drugs? He's smarter then that. He almost quit the sport but he wanted to prove something to everyone and himself - would doing it using drugs prove anything to anyone, especially himself? NO! So why would he do it?

The sadest part about the whole drug situation is that someone can't perform well with speculation. I do it myself at times. I've lost faith in a lot of these athletes, but I have not lost faith in LANCE!

Why is Lance Armstrong being implicated in a "doping scandal" that has plaqued the professional european peloton over the past year? Is wearing the yellow jersey evidence of doping? While professional cycling may be tainted with the use performance enhancing drugs, the european press is covered with an oozing slime of unprofessionalism. Attorneys are often maligned in this country for their lack of professional ethics, however the european press has set a new standard for unethical behavior.

As a science professional I have very strict ideas about what constitutes "evidence" and "proof". As far as I am concerned there is no convincing evidence that Bjarne Riis, Jan Ullrich, Marco Pantani, or Lance Armstrong have used performance enhancing drugs. Nonetheless in the current journalistic climate winning the Tour de France is equivalent to guilt .

I had the good fortune to attend the latter half the Tour last year and for me the 98 Tour was not about doping. Probably because my experience of the tour was not tainted by the jaundiced eye of pseudoprofessional journalists. I am thankful for rider's journals like "Frankie's Diary" which provide great insight into the experience of being a member of the european professional peloton (The pinnacle of our sport). I would like to suggest that professional cyclists contribute more to cycling publications, so the avid cycling fan can experience life in the peloton without being subjected to the overzealous muckracking that now embodies press coverage of professional cycling.

Being from the northshore Boston area myself, you are an inspiration to me and many other cyclists in the area which you began your career. The first pro from New England to not only ride but succeed in Le Tour is a super-human feat...so keep pushing man and support Lance to the win the team deserves!

I saw some average speeds from the various mountain stages and they were about 20 mph or more. This average includes the descents as well as the climbs. Does anyone know the range of speeds (for the best and poorest riders) for these different conditions?

I am really impressed by Lance and the US Postal Team, but I have a lot of respect for anyone who can finish the entire Tour.

When it became evident that a Frenchman would not be winning this year's Tour, it consequently became inevitable that the yellow jersey would be subject to all this speculation and drive-by journalism by some of the media.

Question: Why did Escartin win yesterday's stage and not Alpe d'Heuz? What makes Michael Jordan a better basketball player than the rest of us? What made the French World Cup soccer team better than the rest last year? What makes Gary Kasparov a better chess player? Why are the Swiss so good at making watches? What made Abraham Lincoln a great leader? Was he on EPO while giving the Gettysburg address?

It is an uncontestable fact of life that at different points of time, certain individuals or groups will excel above the rest in their respective sport, field of science, or whatever. Whether it is achieved by a gifted mind, pure talent, luck, hard work, or a combination of all, it is a fact. That a few along the way will inevitably add cheating to their list of ingredients is a sad fact, but it rarely goes unnoticed.

It is unfortunate to Lance and the whole US Postal team that such an inspiring story is tainted by the speculation and ineundo of some people who refuse to believe that the Tour can be won by hard work, focused training, smart tactics, a concentrated mind, and a team of unselfish "Postal workers" willing to sacrifice their personal success for their team leader.

Why, then, this type of journalism? The answer: Drugs in the Tour is still an interesting story. Stories on drugs in Tour + Speculation that yellow jersey involved = more readers = more $, or in this case, more FRF.

Lance, who would have thought? I was painfully shaken to hear the new of your cancer a couple of years ago. I just could'nt believe it, you were to be the next "Greg LeMond" for the US. (I hope you don't mind having your name mentioned in the same breath as Greg) We watched you climbing the ranks in the cycling world with great style and strength. When your cancer went into remission and you started gaining your strength back, was enough to make us happy.
BUT hey, did you have to go and win The Tour? You bet! (I know the tour isnt over yet but you will do it)

Told you so....Me and my wife Jealin...had since dreamed of
Lance in Yellow Jersey ever since he won 1993's Worlds.
During Indurain's time we fantasized of Lance beating Big Mig for the Tour title. Then we were saddenned by the news of him having cancer and belived he would overcome this painful episode to get back to racing. We followed every development in the past 2 years via the internet and were very happy when we learned he was in the peloton again last yr. although not in the Tour. THEN.. 4th in the WORLD TT...watch out Lance learns to Time trial...then i could'nt see any body fat...now Lance can surely climb...Then on the
1st day of the tour we saw Lance in yellow....Our LIVES were Made. I answered one forum b4 the start of the tour and got some of my predictions right...4 Cippollini stages,
and lance getting mountain stage and the Maillot Jaune.
Go LANCE ...from me, My Wife Jearlin, sons Joshua and Axel...and all of the Bagangan Outdoors Cycling Club in the Philippines who idolizes you....and wears your USPostal jerseys.

I spent a number of years as an amateur cyclist before my military career moved me to Japan. I haven't raced for about seven years but you've rekindled my love for cycling with your bravery. Your accomplishments are really an inspiration. I think that with all the drug scandals that have rocked cycling in the last few years -- look at Indurain, look at last year's Tour, look at Pantani getting bounced out of the Giro after the hemocrit -- it's only to be expected that ANY leader in the Tour is going to get questioned. It's just a damn shame these questions are swirling around Lance, who's got to have more integrity than all those other cyclists, & his accusers, put together.
So, Lance, just go ahead and DO WHAT YOU'RE DOING! You are a hero to so many.
Please remember too that it's NOT the French fans who are doing this. (I am speaking as an American of French family background.) It's the press out for a "story." (And I think the whole thing was started by a Belgian paper anyway.) Sure the French fans would like a French rider to do well, that's only natural, but they like and admire Lance, just as they liked and admired Greg Lemond (and Bobbyt Julich last year!). When Lance is standing on that platform in Paris, he'll be cheered by everybody, French, Americans -- EVERYBODY who admires courage and persistance. ALLEZ, LANCE!!! VIVE LE MAILLOT JAUNE!

Hi I thinks its great with Lance succes.I have follow his carrier sens I saw him win the worlds 93.I was there to see him make his attack just in front of me.It was really an surprice move.But I must say thats sad there is no Glenn in the Tour.He could win races without an train working for him.And for a sprinter he is usefull in the smaller mountains too.

Lance, you are a supreme inspiration to me as well as to the US! The daily coverage I see everyday at 8:30 pm on ESPN2 is what keeps me alive and excited through my humdrum job. I am not interested much in sports but there is something different about biking! Lance and the USPS team is facinating and amazing. But one last thing-- what is the meaning of the stuffed lion I see Lance holding up?

I saw you at the Prolog, in Paris, and at the etappe in the alps, where you won, too. I´m german, but I now, that it wasn´t easy for u, to win all this. My father has the same illness like you, and for him, life changes. But we can see, that cancer isn´t a thing, wherefor you have to change ypur way of life. I think, that sport is one of the best ways, to win against the cancer(Krebs).Whith every etappe, you win, you also win against your cancer. I have many respect for you, and you are a person where you must have respect for. You are my idol, and for me, you are the winner of the Tour de France 99, if you win or not, please remind that,

Great job, another beautiful team effort! Way to dig deep team!! I'm sure you all noticed the unfortunate note from a strange 'person' using four letter words etc. Obviously this individual does not understand that this is much larger than sport. What is happening here is a beautiful example of courage, both personal and team courage. It is a wonderful example of hard work, commitment, focus, self-love, and unconditional love/sacrifice for the good of the whole. All of this can be transfered as a perfect template on how to approach life. To shine your LIGHT! To be positive and focused, to truly believe in yourself and to accept the help of those around you. Lance and his team are humble beings, and this individual who posted the four letter 'f' words abviously is cloaked in darkness. The LIGHT of Lance and the USPS Team is too bright for this 'dark-one' to handle. The LIGHT ALWAYS quenchies the dark, and he is melting away......melting away.....

As a survivor ant thriver I find it disgusting that people can belitlle the accomplishments of Lance. he has truly been an inspiration to all of us. While I do understand that the French may be envious of the success of the United States, that is certainly no excuse for the rubbish that has been written. But, together you can do it. This is a time for Tyler and Kevin to truly 'JUST BE', show the peleton your heart and soul. First, I add my voice of admiration to Lance and his teammates for their great achievements so far in this year's Tour, and of course especially to Lance for his incredible individual effort.

Some previous posts have castigated the French press for suggesting that Lance might be using drugs. I don't believe that for a moment -- but let's use this occasion to see what damage has been done to the sport by years of lax drug policy. Today's accusations are the long shadow cast by last year's Tour. I say we should applaud the cycling authorities for instituting more rigorous testing, and that the community of cycling fans needs to keep up the pressure to clean up the sport. Otherwise, there will always be a taint of doubt that undermines what should be the pure excitement of enthusiasm for a great sport.

I hope and trust that the USPS team is always very rigorous in its own standards and that it sets an example for others; hats off to all world-class competitors who maintain a personal standard of drug-free sport, and shame on those who don't!

he is using performance enhancing drugs. Hellooooooo, is there anybody in there. Last time I checked chemotherapy wasn't considered a performance enhancing drug. Lance Armstrong's leading the Tour is a true miracle. Hell, let them continue writing whatever they want, but it won't stop the U.S. Postal Service Team from delivering a first class butt kicking in their biggest national sporting event.

In September 1996, at 27, I was diagnosed with Type I diabetes - a life of injections and hassle to follow.
A month later I heard about Lance's diagnosis. It certainly put things into perspective....

I have identified with Lance ever since, particularly since I got myself a decent bike and improved my own health with long rides.....

Now as he succeeds, I am also doing as well in my own life as I have done in three years.

Everyone here has said "inspirational" because there's no better description. Except maybe "World Sports Personality of the Year 1999".

There is a wonderful theme througout all of these messages. It is a love that transcends all of sport, and even nationalism etc. Lance is demonstrating through sport the kind of focus, determination, humbleness and compassion in everything that he does, on and off of the bike. When one watches his post race interviews on ESPN one can't help but get choked up...because he is on the verge of tears. Through his courage he has defeated fear, through his Spirit he has removed the obstacles in his path. It is obvious that he is touching many of us as he walks (or rides) this path. Now we must examine ourselves, personally take the next step, reach out and touch others as he has touched us. Thank you Lance, you are a beautiful man!!

I was diagnosed with TC in July of 1997 and soon found you about you and other celebrities (like Scott Hamilton) who had faced the disease. I have carried around a newspaper article of you for the past year or so. You have inspired me to work hard in school, at work, in general to take advantage of each day and to be thankful. I can honestly say that my life after TC is much better than it was before TC because of a new perspective on life. I love what you are doing to help fight cancer, to restore dignity to the sport of cycling, and to remind us of how great life is.

Like others alike w/in this website, we are strongly disappointed w/ the Tour de France coverage and the recognition of the sport of cycling and Lance and the USPS team. I have sent an email to a few of the broadcasting channels to express my disappointment. Not sure if it will help, but every little bit is good:

I am rather disappointed in the Tour de France coverage being aired. The problem is...there's not enough coverage. I cannot believe you do not have any coverage and whatever cvg there is, ESPN2/ESPN, it's a 1/2 hr. w/ 1/2 of that being advertisements. C'mon. We have "athletes" in the news like Mike Tyson, Rodman, Strawberry (the "idols" of teen America and the like) everyday and here something extrodinary is happening concerning a "True" American athlete, Lance Armstrong, and the entire American USPS team, and no one here in America seems to know about it or seems to care. What is happening over in France is not only a sports event, but a miracle. A human being close to dying a few years back has conquered the deadly disease all living humans fear today. I think more air time and more info on the sport and the happenings of today would be an inspiration and GREAT NEWS to everyone and you and many other channels are missing what is a "true moment in American history"!!!!

I was diagnosed with TC in 1997 shortly after your treatment. My name is Chuck and I live just up the road from Austin, in Temple, Texas. I had surgery, then radiation, and was told nothing else to worry about. I enjoyed your website. Then, it came back, and had to undergo 4 cycles of Chemo. Your story kept me looking towards that Light at the end of the tunnel. Your inspiration and will to beat this terrible illness kept me going. Thanks for all you have done for cancer victims. As another against-all-odds survivor of cancer, I have to thank you for how your courage and strength are helping to reshape public perception of the millions of us you represent. Each act of strength and endurance you show directly contradicts the common idea that there is no life, certainly no valuable life, after cancer. Congratulations on your success. I have been racing in Texas for 15 years. I grew up in San Antonio. I had a brain tumor when I was 2. What were the effects of the cancer in your brain? I have partial paralysis in my left arm and leg. You are an inspiration. I have a friend who owns a bike shop in Helotes TX that has modified my bikes so that both brakes and shifters are on my right side. Before clipless pedals were out he found Cinnelli track pedals that I used on my left side.

Lance Armstrong has been an inspiration for my wife and me. My wife was diagnosed with breast cancer last November (29 years old). She completed her chemo in April and her condition is doing well. I told her about Lance's story and she has really become inspired by it. As a former hack bicycle racer during my college days at Michigan State University, Lance has rejuvenated my interest in a sport I was ready to discard given all of the drug scandals. Best Wishes.

Even prior to the '99 Tour de France, I have been so impressed by your demeanor, and obvious determination. Determination to survive, disseminate the message about testicular cancer, and to return to the sport you obviously love.
The US Postal Service Team has been impressive, but your individual performance in this Tour de France has been nothing short of inspiring.
Will continue to follow the race daily, and hope to see you in the yellow jersey in Paris, as you have more than earned it.

My husband and I have followed Lance's career for several years. We were devastated to hear of his cancer and thrilled to see him start racing again. My husband even cried when he learned that the cancer had spread to Lance's brain. I was pregnant with our first when he was diagnosed with cancer and my husband still thinks we should have named our son after him. Now, I'm pregnant with #2 and even though it's a girl, she may be the first to be named after Lance Armstrong!!

What a great week! The USA won the women's world cup and Lance Armstrong is in the yellow jersey!!! How great can life get?

There is no doubt about it, Lance Armstrong is currently THE greatest athlete in the world and hardly anyone in the U.S. knows who he is, much less what he is doing right now. It's trully a sad state of affairs when low lifes like Denise Rodman and Mike Tyson get so much prime time press and true roll models like Lance get what, 30 minutes of coverage at 2:00 in the morning on ESPN. I mean really, here we have not only Lance, but the only U.S. team in the Tour dominating the most demanding sporting event in the world and that's all they get. In the words of the Russian comic who's name escapes me.."What a country"

Having followed your career since your triathalon days, and seeing you race in person in the Thrift Drug Classic, the KMart Classic of WV, the Tour DuPont, and countless television broadcasts, I was overwhelmed by your spectacular performance on the climb to Sestrieres. You are truly blessed with great talent, perseverance, and the support of friends, family, and your team.

I am the son of a bike racer (who emigrated from Sweden in the 1920's to race Six Days at Madison Square Garden). I took up racing in the mid 80's, and was a respectable Masters racer. In 1992 I had 5 top 5 finishes in as many races.

I was diagnosed with Desquamative Intersticial Pneumonitis (a restrictive lung disease) in 1992. The strength I carried with me from bike racing helped me to survive. However, the strength of my spirit, and of those around me was the difference between my living and dying.

Watching Lance come back from cancer is without a doubt the most inspiring thing I have ever seen. I am overcome with emotion.

As you prove the power of the spirit to overcome adversity, it has never seemed so important for a person to succeed at a sport endeavor.

My heart and spirit ride with you. Keep on keepin' on

As a nurse practitioner practicing family care in New Mexico I have had the unfortunate experience to treat individuals with such devasting illnesses. I have been able to see some success stories unfold as well as many devasting outcomes.

I am also a out of shape, triathlete that had the pleasure to get my pants whipped by you when you were "wet behind the ears". I have followed your career and can honestly say that I have never been so inspired by your God given abilities, strong will and now an exhibited "peace" in your manner.

I hope my patients will continue to see me, as long as they do not mind me updating them with every statistic of the Tour and especially, you.

Well, I'm not a cyclist, and I'm not a huge cycling fan, but Lance's AWESOME PERFORMANCE has changed all that. I've been glued to the television every night and checking my computer every day to keep up. In my book Lance is up there with the untochables, Jordan, Gretzky, Sampras, Rice, etc. I don't know what else to say except that what Lance is accomplishing transcends sport and represents what the human spirit can accomplish. I hope we have a huge parade for him when he finally comes home to Austin !

...And only a year and a half ago, no team was even willing to give Lance a chance to make a comeback. Face it -- if there was no American sponsor in cycling, Lance would probably be out of racing. Now, Lance has a great chance to do something that no other American ever accomplished...win a tour with the support primarily of other American riders.

Living in Barcelona I was able to watch at least the climb up Galibier live, (before having to be dragged back to work) Kevin Livingston was tremendous, what a ride, is he OK? I saw on the net that he'd fallen on the descent of Montgenevre.

Being an English cyclist I root for all the english speakers, being married to a Texan there's only one favourite though.

Keep the pedals turning Lance, stay strong and show them the way to go!!

Congratulations! I looked through your website, and noticed the L.A.F. Do you support any other rides to fight cancer? I have participated in the Pan Mass Challenge since 1989. It has been around for over twenty years, and all proceeds go to the Jimmy Fund (also the offical charity of the Boston Red Sox) to Support the Dana Farber Cancer Institute. Over 90% of all funds rasied go to the hospital, and millions of dollars are rasied each year. Someone such as yourself, with a high profile and a connection to both cycling and cancer could boost the support for such and event even further. I watched you today and I couldn't believe it. My husband and I were kind of spaced out about this Tour. With all due respect, but baby, with no Marco, no Jan, we thought this kind of sucked! But man, you are making our day. I am not going into the strategy, the tactic, I leave it to the guys that follow cycling once a year (unfortunately I have been for every day of my life, so...) but, you know, nothing hurt more in life than punches in your head and up-hill bycicle races.
Hoops, this sounds like a screw up to be telling you this, but, BECAUSE YOU KNOW FROM WORSE, well baby, Flavio (my hubby) and I expect you just to go out there and kick ass!!! Ok, ok, ok, we don't expect you to be first at Sestriere with 20 minutes advantage on the 2nd, but at least, please make the "other" guys bite the dust.

Lance took two minutes out of Olano in stage 8. Going down the rest of the stage results, he took nearly five minutes from the rest of his remaining rivals. After many lost six minutes on stage 2 and now the results in stage 8, Lance is certainly sitting pretty right now.

Is there any rival on the leaderboard who can challenge provided Lance holds his form in the mountains? Since Olano has never shown that he can handle the mountains (remember he needed great assistance from Jiminez to win the Tour of Spain), is the race Lance's to lose?

I was reading Frankie's column for stage six today at Velonews and he even lamented the fact that they have been missing the breaks. I love the fact that Lance held the yellow and that they have been winning the team class with solid riding but it seems as if they could be a bit more aggressive. I know they are try ing to save up for the MTS, esp. with JV gone, but how far can you take that. No one has led GH out, and he's been getting top tens by himself. And now a couple days in a row with missed breaks. I hope this strategy pays off and we see Lance in yellow on the Champs, its just a bit strange I suppose. just my 2cents. Pete

JV simply proved himself to be a superior rider. I have no idea where you under the impression i read velonews (i don't) and i haven't log on to their web page since they plagiarized a Wurst coloum from Bill Mitchell last year. As for domestiques. JV's role was that. trust me i understand that role. i was never a professional but I had raced considerably.
In a stage race esp the TDF the leader needs to be protected in before the mountains. But especially in the mountains. That is why JV was selected. case in ppoint.

Lemond and ADR in 1989. Not enough climbers (he lacked support inthe mountains) then he moved "z" in 1990.

Don't fret i respect marty as athlete. I sighted JV's results to make the point that Armstrong needs to be surrounded by his strongest team mates. Unfortuntity JV crashed out. And its now a null point.

Hopefully this settled.

My mom had cancer about 10 years ago now and I am so thankful she is still with us. When I saw you cross that line with the best time and they then interviewed you and aired it on ESPN, I was close to tears. I felt for you and could only imagine and wondered what you must have felt. Go get em' and keep up the terrific work! Does anyone else out there get annoyed by seeing the USPS doing so well right now and then see Bobby Julich riding for Cofidis? I think Bobby should tear his Cofidis contract up at the end of the season and quit being a sell out. The only way for Professional Cycling to get huge in the USA is for the US to develop a powerhouse team. What do Americans love? The Yankees, Cowboys, etc.. Everybody loves a dynasty. I feel that Lance and the USPS have an excellent shot at winning the Yellow Jersey this year, but with the addition of Bobby Julich, along with Lance, Vaughters, Livingston, Hincapie and Hamilton, these guys could dominate the Euorpean Pro circuit. Along with that domination comes marketing, more coverage on television, excitement. Look at the recent commercial spots for the US Women's Soccer team. The country is going crazy for these girls. Why? Because they are kicking so much butt and the media has recognized that and jumped on the bandwagon. I would love to see some commercials featuring the USPS, but until they are a total powerhouse, it's an uphill battle. I feel that the addition of Bobby Julich would put this team over the top! What do the rest of you think?

I am only just beginning to appreciate Lance's tremendous achievements. With a lot of effort and a bit of luck, Lance will be wearing the yellow jersey at the end of Le Tour - I'm sure we all hope so. Perhaps the media in the UK might even begin to appreciate fully what this man has had to overcome to reach the very top of his profession. I for one would like to read more about that than the endless dross concerning overpaid and overrated Premiership soccer players, which appears every day in the tabloid press.

I enjoy finding out who was the best climber, best sprinter, best youth and the most combative( hardest working I believe?!?)for the day and overall. The majority of the American public just aren't fans of
professional cycling- soccer used to fall into this category
too, but look how popular it is now! And women's soccer!!
Anyway, Lance is a champion and an inspiration. I wish
there was more TV coverage- have to set the VCR for ESPN's
12:30 am coverage-and watch it a day late. The scenery
is fantastic too! I just wish I could find a copy of the
King of the Mountains jersey...I live in Vermont so although

But his rise is coming at a great time for him and cycling in general, cause we needed someone in the limelight thats real and"clean", cause our sport needs a bath right now. This is really to Lance and anyone else sharing the emotion of the prologue time trial.

Firstly, I am a 43 year old male not given to expressing emotion and particularly in a public forum. I have been an cyclist, Olymic quality, a marathon runner, 2:28 best, and finally a triathlete which is where I heard of Lance. I competed in the first World champs in Avignon in 1989 and in the Commonwealth games in Auckland in 1990. (I am am British by birth).

Anyway, I have followed Lance's career since he first came on the scene as a triathlete.

When I heard he had cancer I cried. Believe me,I am not given to crying, especially over men!. When I saw the race tonight and Lance winning the prologue and his subsequent interview I cried again. This time for joy. Lance you are something else! You are everything a hero should be my kids are rooting for you as am I. Go for it do it and I will be with you in Paris.

Lance Armstrong put on an amazing show of athleticism and determination with the opening prologue in a Tour marred by scandal. After witnessing Lance's enthusiasm and cometitive spirit to push beyond the odds, one can't help but feel motivated to acomplish their own dreams regardless of the obstacles faced. Lance has started a new Tour with a fresh and inspirational beginning. There is an old expression regarding the Tour de France, which says the Tour de France makes great cyclist, great cyclists don't make the Tour. On July 2, 1999 one great cylist restored a symbol and testement as the greatest sporting event in the world, the Tour de France.

Hey, how about some opinions on the outcome of the Amstel Gold Race in which Lance and Michael Boogerd broke away from the peloton and Lance practically towed Boogerd to the finish line since Boogerd did not assist in the break.

The chase group contained van Bon, the Rabobank teammate of Boogerd, and Boogerd presumably calculated that if he did not assist, then the break would come back and van Bon would have the best chance in a sprint finish.

Does etiquette dictate that since Armstrong did all the work on the break, Boogerd should have allowed Armstrong to win the race? Indeed, I have read that Boogerd even apologized to Lance after the race. I don't think there's any doubt other more congenial riders have sacrificed winning in light of super-human efforts of a competitor to preserve a break. I think Lance got the shaft in that race.

What are your thoughts about Lance taking the Prologue.Its a little longer than usual which may not help Boardman.But I think we could see Lance in yellow Saturday.

where is jemison? leaving him off the team would be like leaving sean yates off a tour team. what a bout the marketing mistake? stars and bars not in the tour? besides all that marty is the goto gut who gets the job done. he always sacrafices for others. it will prove to be a big mistake not taking marty to the tour

To all of you Tour junkies out there---what are your GC predictions for the top 5 or 10? I must admit that I'm a bit puzzled because of all of the guys who aren't racing, for one reason or another, but here is my top 5:

1. Bobby Julich
2. Michael Boogerd
3. Lance Armstrong
4. Pavel Tonkoz
5. Abraham Olano

I would like to put Lance at numero uno, but I like Julich's chances better in a grand tour, based on the past. Any thoughts?

I just want to know if someone has the schedule of the T.V. coverage for the Tour de France in the U.S. So I can see the Posties in action. I hope it is not as late as last year on ESPN.

I just read an article that was naming ten favorites to win, and Lance was not the list. After having an erratic but favorable preseason, and USPS concentrating on this race, you have to have Lance and the rest of the USPS team on the list. If I am wrong to feel this way please someone educate me. With Pantani and a lot of the other big names not participating in the Tour this year I think it is silly. Especially for Pantani, just because the tour insn't suited for him he's is not going to participate. I feel that it is kind of a cop out on his part. I feel a lot of these guys need to stop complaining and let their cycling do the talking for them.

Hello---I was just wondering who's decision it was not to select Marty Jemison for the Tour team (Johan Bruyneel's). It seems as if Marty is on pretty good form now and he is the U.S. champion---that should count for something, I would think. It seems odd to pick Pascal Derame over Jemison. Didn't he have to abandon during the Dauphine Libere?
Just curious.
