At Sir Bazil's request, here's the first part of our Rome experience. More will follow over the next couple of days, hopefully including some pictures (not of Orm's standards, but passable!)

    Swansea v Cardiff this Saturday.

I'm surely there'll be hearty slaps on the back and friendly handshakes all round after that one. Makes me glad I'm 6000 miles away.

Wouldn't mind being at some of those 1st Round FA cup games though. There's some crackers.

You can stick your 'World Series' up your arse, I'd rather see Wealdstone v Rotherham.

  • Rome Ref Rage -- dodger, 11:08:00 11/06/09 Fri
At the time I was angry, and like everyone else I thought at most the red card offenses deserved yellows. I would have expected that from a Spaniard or WOP ref, but it was a surprise coming from a Dutchman. I haven't watched that much Dutch football, but I'd always thought that their style of play was more like the English game. That's why their players adapt to the English game so well. I can't believe that ref would have given red cards for those offenses in Holland. Otherwise every game would have multiple red cards.

I wonder if the refs are interrupting the rules to the "letter of the law" in European games. After all, a tackle from behind is seen as "serious foul play" and FIFA has attempted to outlaw it.

Although I agree that in England Neveland would almost certainly got a yellow, especially as he'd just come on the field, he should have known better. That's not the first time he's dived in like that, and as an experienced International, he should have know that he's more likely to get sent off in that situation.

Interestingly, during the Liverpool game Degen was sent off for a similar tackle, serious foul play, and most people I think thought that it warranted a yellow card. But, his appeal was denied by the FA and he got a 3-match ban. So, if it happens in England should we be surprised that it's happening in Europe?

Overall, I won't be unhappy if we don't qualify for the next stage of the Europa Cup. I reckon we should play the reserves in the next two games. I think the club have already reduced the ticket prices for the Sofia game. With the Africa Cup of Nations and hopefully a good run in the FA Cup, getting eliminated from Europe might be a blessing in disguise.

  • What an absolute disgrace!! -- Wilkkkee, 19:24:24 11/05/09 Thu
Well I managed to sit through that match and what an utter disgrace that referee is. He should never ref another match, not even a pub match!!. Whether or not you feel that the trip that Nevland put on the Roma player was a bad tackle.........it was never a red card!!!. He caught the fuggers heels with his shin......not his studs!!. You could see that that changed the whole complexion of the match and we were pinned back after that. I know it is all in hindsight but Dodger, Spoz and I all agreed that after the red card BZ should have come on in place of either Riise or Gera, with Dempsey drop back and keeping BZ up top. It was a bit of bad luck that Arne's shot deflected twice (the last off his brother and went in) and MS didn't have a chance. Konch's red card was a little more rash tackle but really still only a yellow card in my opinion, however the match was over at that time anyway. How that c**t of a ref didn't give bugger all for the elbow that Riise caught in the face is beyond me. FIFA need to investigate this fuggin clown as it certainly looked like somebody had told him at half time that Roma MUST WIN!!!.

  • Wilkkkee v's old fulham boy -- Wilkkkee, 11:46:30 11/03/09 Tue
Everyone seems to want to know what has happened here.
Well it started off as ofb said with me replying to something that he had posted about troube in Bishops Park with Arsenal. I had taken his post to say that he stood around and watched this and if I remember we outnumbered Arsenal with our "yoof". I remember this turning into quite a debate that ended up being quite constructive, with some nasty things being said and even some comments directed at Sue (which wasn't necessary). Secondly, after the match on the weekend against Liverpool, ofb was on TIFF bad mouthing BZ and calling him a twat. I took offense to this as I feel that BZ has been one of our best players over the past four matches and I really beleive that he gives 110% every match. We all know that he isn't the best finisher that we have at the club, but his roll on the team isn't only to score goals. After I had read what ofb had wrote I responded with "pot..........kettle". This may have been a "knee jerk" reaction on my part, but I have always thought that you get behind any player wearing the black and white. BZ can celebrate any way that he wants and if you listen to his interview after the match he mentioned that he was trying to "silence his critic".....fair play. Anyway this started a short arguement between myself and ofb with him actually threatening me as well as calling me a "canadian mug". I then posted the following day that I was having trouble getting onto the official site and asked if anyone else was having problems. ofb decided to respond with "no....big mouth" and "maybe its only a problem with tourists". I just smiled and passed over these comments. This morning I come onto the usually friendly exiles site and see that I am being called a cunt and a prick and am being told to fuck off, of course I am slightly offended by this, but I hear it so often from the bastard.........I am used to it. Just for your information ofb, I happened to grow up in England and left in June of 1975 so I did witness trouble at matches as I started to watch Fulham in around 1968. I have been back now some eight or nine times since. My Mother being Canadian and my father English I am disappointed that you seem to have issues with Canadian's.
Anyway, that is what has happened as I have mentioned earlier in my reply, if I have hurt ofb's feelings because of my opinions on certain issue's that don't agree with his opinions, then I apologise..............fair enough?.

  • Good piece -- Spozzie, 16:53:56 11/04/09 Wed
On Saturday, Focus came live from a club that seems to be doing things the right way.

Step forward Fulham. In some ways, they are just like so many other Premier League clubs. They have a foreign owner, big wage bill, and a worrying level of debt. Yet down on the banks of the River Thames, they are so community friendly and inclusive that they have somehow managed to keep a family feel to the place, albeit a rather posh family that wear a lot of Barbour jackets. How do they do it?

Maybe it's just because their stadium is so different from the concrete bowls that are popping up all over the place. The cottage, the balcony, the river, the great players of the past, the ancient stand and seats where even six-year-olds struggle for leg room. There is a rich history and romance that soaks the place and makes everyone inside feel like they are part of something.

It helps to have the right manager, of course. Roy Hodgson not only gets his tactics right 9 times out of 10, he also warms up for a game by reading a novel and going for a walk with his wife. Maybe that's the secret!

It was during Saturday's fantastic 3-1 win over Liverpool that I realised why he's so fond of Bobby Zamora. All season, Hodgson has said the former West Ham striker doesn't need to score goals to stay in the side because he does so much work for everyone else.

Against Liverpool, Zamora chased everyone down, bullied Jamie Carragher, should have won a penalty, brought the Fulham midfield into the game, ran the line and scored the first of his sides three goals.

I am not saying we should be reserving him a seat on the plane to South Africa, but he seems to be one of the most underrated strikers out there. It probably doesn't help that he missed that sitter against Manchester City.

The other incredible thing about Fulham is the owner's dress sense. There aren't many people who get up in the morning and put check trousers on, ally them with a gingham shirt and then set it all off with a tartan jacket and yellow cravat. Maybe they've sold out of mirrors at Harrods! That said, I'm sure Mr Al Fayed's socks cost more than my car.

The other thing I enjoyed at the weekend was the fact that I can now claim to be the first person to score a goal with the new Premier League ball. If you don't believe me, watch this...

I know what you're thinking, "there was a massive badger in the goal and you hit it straight at him". It's true that Billy the Badger had to be led onto the pitch by his minder because he cannot see his feet, but let's not allow those facts to get in the way of my claim to fame.

I acknowledge I didn't quite strike the ball as intended, I acknowledge I didn't quite place the ball as I intended, and I also acknowledge it wasn't exactly travelling at the speed I envisaged. Yet, despite all that, the net did ripple (well at least there was a small bulge).

Mark Lawrenson's strike was impressively crisp, clipping the inside of the post before going in, but Lee Dixon is still gutted that his scoopy-loopy-chippy thing came back off the crossbar. He tried to imply that his was the best strike of the three, but I pointed out to him that crossbars don't win you World Cup finals and he needs to work on his mis-hits from the edge of the area that go in off a giant badger.

Well, to my surprise Issue #3 narrowly passed last night that changes the Ohio constitution to allow for 4 casinos to be built in Cleveland, Columbus, Toledo and Cincinnati. This issue has been on the ballot many times before and always resoundingly defeated. They reckon it will be two years before there will be a casino in Cincinnati, but that will spell the end of the riverboat casinos in Indiana.

  • "The Foundation Of The Fulham Football Club" Part I of XII -- LBNo11, 16:05:52 11/03/09 Tue

During the 1969-70 season Fulham FC published in it’s programme a serialisation of a booklet from a former player and club secretary Mr H.D.Shrimpton entitled “Foundation History of Fulham Football Club”. The first part appeared on December 27th 1969 for the game against Barrow. The editor added this postscript to the serialisation:-

“Mr. E.W. Alexander, who lives in Birmingham yet supports Fulham with an inspiring tenacity, has sent us a copy of a booklet he bought recently. We found it fascinating. It is a great opportunity to set the record right on a number of things, so we will be reproducing parts of it from time to time.

We are not sure of the date but assume it is from before the first (world) war.”

In the spring of 1997 the same booklet was re-published for £1.00 to help with the funding of Fulham 2000 campaign.

I have always wanted to have such an important historical document available for a wider audience and with the advent of the cyber age this is now possible. I managed to trace (thanks to Geoffrey the cabbie on the official message board, and Jenny Gower at Fulham FC) Henry Shrimpton’s grandson, the former Fulham FC director David Shrimpton, whose family still support Fulham, and he very kindly gave me permission to reproduce the booklet exclusively for Friends Of Fulham, TOOFIF and Fulham USA. It must be noted that the writing is in the vernacular of that period, and that although at times the information appears disjointed it is nonetheless enthusiastic and interesting. I have deliberately not changed the wording of the publication in any way, and have left the original programme editors notes from 1970 in italics.

In the original accompanying notes with the series, there was a foreword from G.H.T Shrimpton, CBE., TD. The father of David Shrimpton. “My father published the booklet in 1950 and it is pleasant to learn there is still interest in his account of the origins of the club. My family still takes some pride in its association with Fulham. The record of four brothers playing for it, three of them regularly, seems unlikely to be equalled and is enhanced by the fact that one of them, Tom Shrimpton, captained the first Fulham team to play at Craven Cottage. My father and brother were in the side.

When his employers required my father to reduce his commitment to football, he turned out for Fulham under the name of S.D. Henry. However he was always known locally as ‘Mo’, a name he acquired as a young full back for Fulham against Dartford in an away Cup tie. Fulham who were not expected to win, took a 1 - 0 lead in the second half and thereafter my father put so many clearances in the river that the name of the boatman who was called each time to retrieve it remained with my father until he died in 1956, aged 81.

I was weaned on Fulham football and although I played rugby football for Kent and London Counties and was for fifteen years chairman of the Old Blues R.F.C., I used to return with my father to Craven Cottage when I was injured or the ground too hard for rugby.

Now my early conditioning has re-asserted itself. My sons, fourth generation Fulham supporters, and I rarely miss a first or reserves game there”

David Shrimpton has written a further postscript to accompany this ‘electronic’ serialisation.

"The family connection with Fulham is a genetic defect, but this applies to many long-standing Fulham supporters!

Our family involvement in Fulham goes through four generations. My grandfather, Henry, captained Fulham and claimed to be the first person to kick a football at Craven Cottage when on 10th October 1896 he led the team out to play Minerva, the opening game at the new ground.

Three of his brothers also played for Fulham; he then became Company Secretary, and the registered office of the Club was at the family home in Fulham, so he was well qualified to write the ‘Foundation History of Fulham Football Club’.

My father, George Shrimpton, was a life long supporter and a Vice President, and he and his father took me to my first match in 1949. I became a Director of the Club in 1991, worked with the Muddyman family to rescue the Club, developed the Dream Scheme to find someone seriously rich to take over the Club (instead of the terminal plan to reduce capacity down to 12,000 by building flats on three sides of the ground) and through an unplanned act of fate was responsible for introducing MAF to Fulham – and the rest is history".

Fulham FC began it's life 130 years ago this year (2009), and so to commemorate this - we bring you:-

“Foundation History of The Fulham Football Club”

    by

    H.D. Shrimpton

(ex Fulham F.C. player and secretary)

    PART I

“TWO CLERICS WERE THE REAL FOUNDERS"

The Fulham Club was founded in 1879 – not 1880 as sometimes published. In its very varied existence it has been faced by many set-backs but has invariably come out on top.

The Club today boasts a neat, compact and comfortable ground on the banks of the Thames at Craven Cottage, and a very loyal and ardent array of followers who, win or lose, continue to give their unstinted support while good, clean honest to goodness football is played.

The real founders of the club were the Rev. Cardwell of St, Andrew’s, Fulham and the Rev. P.S.G. Propert (later Prebendary) of St. Augustine’s Mission, Lillie Road.

The latter in his earlier days at Oxford had been a footballer and a general all-round athlete, but he never played for the club. These two clergymen in their spare time fostered sport among the youngsters of St. Andrews Youth Club.

Football and cricket were their main sports, the cricket section being coached by Mr. W.H. Patterson, one-time captain of Kent County Cricket Club. The football club was known as St. Andrews.

Its ground - not enclosed - was situated in Star Road, Fulham, adjacent to the school, and was commonly known as “The Mud Pond.”

Although it has been stated from time to time that Fulham F.C. started their career at Lillie Road, this is not correct, for one goal backed on to Star Road School wall and, moreover, Lillie Road School was not built until 1893.

The first secretary of the club was Mr.Tom Norman. Playing colours were at first nondescript, but when the club began to get into its stride, definite colours were decided on, these being light and dark blue quartered jerseys, later changed to shirts in keeping with the then prevailing patterns.”

The above has been published each month on the Friends Of Fulham Message Board http://www.friendsoffulham.com/ please take a look. If you wish I will post more of the series on here. I hope you enjoy - LBNo11
