Man pleads guilty in huffing crash that left one man in wheelchair

A Rapid City man charged with crashing into three vehicles -- critically injuring one man -- while he was huffing a chemical cleaner has pleaded guilty.

Maconnell Baker, 25, will be sentenced Dec. 3 for vehicular battery in connection with the May 7 accident.

He admitted to inhaling Dust Off cleaner, which caused him to black out while he was driving south on North Maple Avenue near Knollwood Heights Elementary School.

Police investigators said Baker's Nissan Xterra struck a southbound Jeep Cherokee, causing it to spin. The Xterra then hopped the curb and traveled along the sidewalk before crashing into the driver's side door of a Honda Accord driven by Shaun Herrod, 29.

The Xterra then struck a parked motorcycle owned by a Knollwood crossing guard.

Herrod's 4-year-old son, who was riding in the Honda, was not injured, nor was the driver of the Cherokee. Herrod was critically injured but survived.

Herrod is slowly regaining some movement and speech and uses a wheelchair, said Pennington County Deputy State's Attorney Josh Hendrickson. "He still has a long way to go."

Baker was scheduled for trial Nov. 18 and 19. He faces up to 10 years in prison and a $20,000 fine.
