Subject: xterra 05 4x4

I have a 05 4x4 6 speed 36,000 miles. The tranny was slipping slightly so I took it to a dealer that said I needed a new clutch. It wasn't too bad so I put it off. The clutch still has tension in it and I can put it in gear now without pushing the clutch at all, but it will not catch at all. Has anyone else had a problem like this, or have any idea what it may be?
