Ok, so I've got to the point where I have removed the sideplates, diff and the large nut type thing that goes around the pinion bearing. I have removed the circlip from the reverse gear, but cannot remove the gear itself. I have also removed all the nuts around the gear housing.

What do I do now?!?!?!

I have tried tapping the gearset free and it's having none of it. Is there something I have missed? It's driving me nuts!! :(

Any help is appreciated!

Hi, i'm looking for a little advice.
I'm rebuilding my engine and am wanting to increase to 1641cc, with possibly an Engle 110 cam.
I'll be running dellorto 36 DRLA's, my quiery is, what heads to use.
I was thinking of some with larger valves,(40mm in, 35.5 ex) but i'm not sure if this is over the top. Would a ported pair of stock heads be better?
Also, if i used an Engle 110 would i have to use cut to length pushrods, or can i get away with shimming the rocker?
Any help will be greatly appreciated

I recently had a problem where cyl's 1 & 2 wouldn't run at low revs. I replaced electrical parts, leads, rotor arm, cap, and condenser and stripped/cleaned the carb, with no effect. I began to dread a serious cyl head problem, but a trip to 'Arnie's' at Yeovil revealed that the slow-running jet on the side of the carb had loosened with vibration and simply fallen out; a situation he had aparently seen before, more than once. Beware EMPI Twin 40 buyers. Other than this I think they're a good carb for the money they cost.
NB. The advance timing setting for an 009 is approx 30 degrees for H/C Hds, 34 degrees for L/C Hds. See 'Ken's Buggy barn' on the Web (not 'VW Tech Talk' as I stated in an earlier message).

Hi John.

I have to tell you, every night my wife and I play music before dinner. We have a 7 yr old son who has been exposed to this (from age 3!!). He gets everything from Fugazi, Shudder to Think, Jesus Lizard to....you guessed it...Buzzcocks. Recently, it was fancy dress day at his school (Forrest Primary, Canberra ACT, Australia). Guess who he wanted to go as? Yep, you buddy!! In the end, we thought he wouldn't be recognised, so we dressed him as Andrew Johns (league half back, if you're not a follower!)
Just thought you might like to know you're still having an impact (his favourite song is Noise Annoys). Thanks for writing the soundtrack to my twenties!

Cheers, Phil

Date Posted: 16:32:35 11/21/04 Sun

hi there, my 1641 type one engine in my split camper had been popping at the head's.. so thinking i'd just have to strip down and re-torque the bolt's,i set about taking the engine out and stripping the tinware etc in the usual fashion. With the head's stripped down it was obvious where it had been popping from by the black burn mark's.So i decided to attack this head first.
I carefully followed the instruction's from the manual and loosened (after removing the rocker shaft!)the head bolt's off and then gave them the initial 1.0 mkg(7lbft)tighten up in the correct shown order and then gave the main tighten of 3.2mkg 23lbft...all well an good until the 7th one!
It hasn't snapped, just taken all the thread out of the case.
What's the best and proven repair for this.....is it the helicoil route...or is there another way?
Also does anyone think seeing as one of my thread's in the case have failed i should replace all of stud's?
Any help will be muchly appreciated!!
Best Regard's,Glen.

Anyone built a VW air-cooled bike ?
I've seen a (very) few featured in magazines etc.
Mine's been on the road a couple of years on and off now, with a 1600 twin carb motor and using the car transaxle (reversed off course; crown on opp side off pinion).A solenoid is operated from a 'normally open' push-switch close to the throttle to select the first/second 'range'. This works incredibly well. Sounds remarkably like a performance harley at tick-over, some say better !
Hope to get it in Volksworld/BSH during 2005.

have some sets of Tarox disc brake kits up for sale.

These kits are brand new, still in the box, never used!!

They are vented and grooved disks, with 6 pot calipers.

They come with adapters to allow the calipers to be bolted onto your existing spindles.

Pads are included.

Special braided hoses with aeroplane style connectors are also included!

These brakes are probably the best you can get!!

At the moment I have sets in Porsche pattern and 4 stud beetle pattern. They can be fitted to 1200/1300/1500 models and also 1302/3. You do need to specify which though as there is a difference in legnths!

These kits are £670!!!

Email, PM or call me on 07855943664 if you are interested or have any questions.

Cheers Lawrence

i have a 1303, it has been in the restooration/ custom works for a few years now.
during this period i have ben driving "modern " cars.
i jumped into the bug to move it aroung the garage and noticed the loose wobbly steering, there must be about 1-2" play at the steering wheel rim before the wheels think about moving.
there are new urethane bushes on the anti roll bar, track rod ends are fine and the ball joints are new.
so i figure that the play is in the steering box.
can the box be adjusted or should i look at putting in a rack out of something.
looking a the rack option, what fits and what have other people been able to use?

I have a stock 1600cc engine on a 1979 T2. After fitting a Mondo exhaust with the merged pipes I have noticed that the engine tinware and even the bodywork around the bottom of the engine bay becomes very hot after a journey.

Now I don't know if all this heat existed with the previous stock exhaust but I wondered if anybody out there knew about the usability of these Mondo boxes? Is it safe for all this heat to be building up?

for those of you who are considering fitting custom seats but dont know what to go for , i can verify that you can fit 2 SPARCO REV seats into the front of a beetle, you get about 1" clearance all round, no interferance with the doors or in the middle. now i just have to make mounting brackets, as i dont think that having the seats supported with a few old paint tins would pass MOT.

Right, I've decided to throw a bit of money at the Notch, which means my long-term project is reluctantly up for sale.

So if anyone's interested in getting their hands dirty and taking my Oval project off my hands, e-mail me at oliver dot hudson @ archant dot co dot uk (No spaces) with any questions.

Pics will be available after the weekend hopefully, but for now the spec is as follows:

1956 LHD factory ragtop Oval (Sun Sedan) - no engine,
New passenger floorpan,
New heater channels,
3inch narrowed, dropped beam, inner wings chopped out (a bit rough!)
Type 3 rear brakes,
1972 1300 singaxle 'box with short axles and h/d sideplate,
Solid gearbox mounts,
Removable rear valance,
Bonnet and W deck lid bare metalled,
2 good doors,
Day mouldings front 'glass wings,
2 inch wider rear 'glass wings,
10 inch wide rear wheels with tyres,
Smooth dash,
All glass, window seals there, in fact pretty much everything is here to finish car.
Very solid car, virtually no welding needed, just needs prep, paint and putting back together!

Other parts to be added as and when I remember!
Sensible offers please.

Cheers,
Ollie

Subject: Dellorto Carb Problems

Author:
Steven

Date Posted: 17:29:30 08/19/04 Thu

I have a problem with one of my Dellorto DRLA45 carbs and wondered if anyone could shed any light on a fix.

The plugs in cylinders 1, 2 and 3 are all running super clean, but the plug in 4 is constantly fouled with fluffy black carbon. The motor is running quite badly due to the over rich condition of the single cylinder.

I've borrowed a carb to swap with the one on the left side of the motor and this fixes the problem, so I know the issue is with my carb and not the motor.

I have stripped and cleaned the carb, and checked that all the jets sizes etc are consistent. I have also swapped most of the jets between the carbs, but number 4 plug still fouls.

The problem appears to be that number 4 cylinder is constantly running rich, as though fuel is constantly leaking into that cylinder when it shouldn't be. I've checked down the carb throat as the motor is running and cannot see any excess fuel spilling into the carb.

I'm stumped, as all the possible causes I can think of would affect both cylinders 3 and 4, rather than just one of them !

Anyone got any bright idea's before I lose the plot and the carb get's thrown out of a window !?

Help,

When checking the oil breather tower in my bug's engine (1914cc)today i noticed there was a deposit of creamy brown sludge inside. The engine has only covered approximately 1500 miles, although recently the engine has been sluggish and the carbs tend to spit at about 2000 rpm. I was planning to book the car in for a session on a dyno fairly soon to get the carbs rejetted etc, but i am now worried that the problem may be more severe.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
