Subject: Total VW subscriber refund?

Author:
John Maher
[Edit]

Date Posted: 09:55:35 06/10/04 Thu

I've had a request from Brian Burrows (Volkszone) to post the following information: it appears there has been an offer from the publisher of the now defunct 'Total VW' magazine to refund all subscribers who were still owed copies at the time the mag folded. Because these things usually have a greater chance of success if everyone involved acts as a group rather than individually, I recommend you follow the instructions below.

If you paid out on an unfulfilled subscription for Total VW (i.e. if you didn't receive all the mags you were supposed to before it went 'bust') . . . or are owed money for articles/pictures . . .

Please click on this thread url:

http://www.volkszone.com/VZi/showthread.php?s=&threadid=98769

Please post who you are and how much?

Then, email the same information to: stuart@jazzdesign.co.uk with your postal address and he's given his word he'll reimburse you. But PLEASE make sure you add your name to the VZi thread!!!

Also, if you have friends who are owed but don't have internet access . . . please post their name and how much . . . and then send THEIR details to jazzdesign too.

Then . . . if/when you receive payment . . . please let us know about that too ;)

Spread the word . . .

Thanks in advance

Brian Burrows

Date Posted: 13:59:31 06/09/04 Wed

I am thinking of fitting ratio rockers - 1.4/1 I have a pair of JMR heads like this:
90.5 head - semi hemi cut
Stock twin port head, bored for 90.5 or 92mm cylinders and with a semi hemi cut 57cc combustion chamber. Berg unleaded valves, shimmed single heavy duty valve springs, chromoly spring retainers and clearanced, hardened valve colletts. They also feature a three angle valve job. 7.6:1 compression on a 0.060" deck height 1776cc engine. These work great with an Engle 110, improved carburation and 4 into 1 header. Because of the stock valve sizes, you can retain the heat exchangers too, with no loss of performance.

And I have engle 110 cam and berg bolt up rocker shafts.
If I want to fit ratio rockers can I expect any benefit and do I have to change the vlave springs or any other components. Cheers for any advice.ps its 1776 approx 90-100bhp fitted in a t2 with dellorto 40DRLA

I'll be having the NSR 1/4 panel and I think I have someone interested in the bottom section of the rear window including engine lid hinge panel...
The car has never been welded (obviously needs channes now) but is very straight.

Anyone looking for panels for their early bug? It still has the original bumper mounts!

i have a 1973 beetle wizard roadster 4 seater for sale, its had all the welding done and is 100% solid, it was taken down to bare metal ready for spraying, and then neglected, since then its sat in my garden for nigh on a year and is covered in surface rust, its not deep at all. the car is 100% still solid!!!! i have a full empi quiet pack exhaust for it, lowered front beam complete with disk brakes, 3 race cams, dellorto drla 36mm carbs, full carpet set, it has the mega wide arches on it and also the wide running boards, 15" team cyclone wheels on the back (10" wide!!!) and 14" team cyclones on the front, spun alluminium fuel tank, alternator conversion. i am now desperate for the space and have lost interest in the project, the engine is sweet as hell and started first time when i wired in the ignition, since then its not been touched and the wiring is all to cock.
its an ideal project car for someone who wants something special!
i am after offers around the 300 quid mark for everything!!! (most of the spares are brand new!)

I've been told if i bump the compresion up to around 8-5-1 i can use the 110 cam to good affect. It's in a fairly light beetle that would like to see a bit of strip use but is used mainly on the streets, i know power is compromise but i don't want something that is a pig at low revs, any thoughts? oh yes, i'm on a fairly tight budget aswell before people tell me to up the displacement, cheers.

The title says it all really.

What would you say about the suitability of a pair of 32PDSIT's off a type 3 for use in a 1776.

not looking for maximum power, more looking for fuel economy, reliability, driveability and bit of vroom.

Any thoughts appreciated.

Apologies for another posting on the subject of dropped spindels but.......just fitted a pair with castor shims on stock beam (cannot afford to narrow at present) with Empi 8s with 185/55/15 tyres up front.
On right turns there is clonk clonk clonk coming from under the wings. I'm assuming it is not the tyres rubbing as the clonk clonk noise is not constant and I assume a rubbing tyre under the wing would be ?
No other modifications - it's a standard 1970 1500cc. No signs of rubbing under the arches and the wheel doesn't foul anything on full turn when the vehicle is stationary. Only when driving and only on right turns. Sorry if the answer is obvious, but I haven't a clue.

Any ideas ? Thanks.

Subject: Weird noise from hub...

Author:

[Edit]

Date Posted: 20:09:05 04/10/04 Sat

I have a weird noise that seems to be coming from my rear passenger hub area. The noise is like some kind of rubbing and at times sounds like rubber. The weird bit is that it does not occur all of the time! There is no noise when i have my foot down on the accelorator however regardless of whether the car is in or out of gear, if i lift my foot at all from the accelorator to either coast along or change gear, it makes the noise. The car is lowered but as it is not a constant noise and from only one side, i dont think this is the problem and i know that the wheels are not fowling anything.

It also doesnt seem to matter about the speed i am travelling at or the type of road surface as it occurs on a straight flat road. Im figuring it is something in around the hub area, it doesnt sound like the engine (1600 running twin 36 dellortos), It doesnt happen when the car is at a stop, only when the wheels are turning. I cant think of anything that could make this noise and be affected by the use of the accelorator!

Any opinions would be appreciated
Thanks

Declan.

I have come across a set of what seem to me to be interesting wheels, but that remains to be seen. They are 6 x 14 Wolfrace slots with wide 5 bolt pattern. I believe they came off a 356 but have been in storage for some time - look to be in good nick but grubby. Are they really that interesting or am I just getting excited because I stumbled on them in one of those mythical "I've got some wheels at the back of my shed" scenarios. Are they of interest to anybody? Located in the North West.

We have a alot of transmission problems as well as electrical. The vehical gets at a maximum of 400 km per tank, and has very poor acceleration. I have a feeling that these 2 issues poor gas/ acceleration have something to do with a faulty emissions control. I have recently heard that within a 5 year reliability survey VW are rated the worst. I have chromoly pushrods im my 1776 engine with 110 cam and HD springs , when engine gets hot (operating temp) clearances get even larger than what I set when it was cold. This happens what I think because the chromoly material does not expand like stock al. pushrods . even If I set to zero clearance cold , I have valve train noise after warm-up . I am considering to swap stock pushrod back , those are a bit short and my valve geometry will be a bit changed but are stock pushrod fine to use with engle110 and HD springs ? or what can be done with chromoly ones ?

I recently purchased a set of 17' alloys with 205/45 tyres and a golf G60 stud pattern, which I was going to fit to my G60 but are now earmarked for my bug. I've got a couple of questions which I hope someone can answer.

Firstly having a golf G60 stud pattern and offset I'm changing the brakes over to suit, including changing the rear drums to discs. Will there be any problems with fitting the wheels under the standard wings, given that I don't want the wheel sticking out past the wing. If so what will I need to do to sort this problem?

Secondly What is the lowest I can drop the suspension, and what is the best way of achieving this?

Thanks in advance

Yes Guys,

If you want that ultimate Old School Period Speed accessory, then look no further.
This particular unit is in excellent condition, Billet silver in colour with a brand new NOS Rotor Arm and Cap fitted. It comes with a spare cap, rotor arm and leads & support clamp (to prevent vibration). Exactly the same as what the EMPI Inch Pincher ran, and Dave Mason from DKP.

These babies, when they do come around cost, a hell of a lot more than the asking price.

Selling due to now having a full Mallory ignition setup.

If anyone is genuinely interested i`ll try and e-mail some pics.

Iam asking for what it owes me £150.00 but sensible offers will be considered.

Cheers and thanks for lookin.

Has anybody got any suggestions on how I can fix the following; one of the studs that holds the drain plate onto the bottom of my engine is loose, have tried re-tightening it back into the case but it just won't stay -I'm thinking the thread on the case might be worn. I was wandering which people would choose, either getting the case and heads bored to 1776 and running a engle 110, or keeping it 1600 with cb 044 heads and a engle 110 possibly 120, both engines will be fully balanced. Any advice appreciated, cheers.

Yes I know this subject has been covered before because I checked the archive.
What hasn't been talked about is where people have cut their beams and how they welded it.
I am in the process of taking 50mm (2") out of my beam to resolve clearance issues with the front wings (fenders?). I have cut the beam next to the centre mounting brackets, leaving them intact so I have a decent reference when it comes to welding the parts back together again. Is this the method most folks use?
My main question is about the welds themselves. My plan is to grind a 60 degree edge on the tubes so I am left with a V shaped groove to weld. During the assembly I intend to insert a permanent backing material within the tube so it will be a tube within a tube if you see what I mean. Once it is jigged and set up square and true I intend to make 2 passes with a TIG welder at about 130amps 20V
What do you guys think? I want to make absolutely sure that it will not crack in service. Has anybody had the misfortune of a broken beam?

Thanks for any help with this!

[Edit]

Date Posted: 04:41:03 01/07/04 Wed

I'm rebuilding an offroad racing buggy in the sunny climes of Adelaide South Australia. It's currently running a fairly standard '71 super beetle lump with a lightened and balanced bottom-end/flywheel, mildported head, a Scat C35, extractors and a single Weber 40DCNF on an individual runner manifold. I've recently had the option to buy a pair of Weber 36IDF's from an Alfa-33 1500cc and not being an expert on VW go-faster stuff (yet) am wondering whether they are likely to be of any advantage.

Any advice would be appreciated.

I'm selling a pair of weber 40 IDF carbs that are BRAND NEW appart for about 30minutes use on a dyno. No linkage, filters, manifolds. The carbs will also come with high quality machined alloy velocity stacks (ram pipes) which are about £12-£13 each (thats £44-£48 for the set...)

Remeber these are new so no need to replace anything, ready to run straight away no worries.

Want what i paid a month ago £300 not used since then so not really open to offers...

Look at it this way... If you were looking to buy a new weber set up this could be a way of saving some cash :)

*£300 for the carbs and 40mm velocity stacks (40s dont come with stacks fitted)

*£150 gets a brand new CB Hex linkage with offset manifolds and K&N style filters

Thats £450 for a 40 IDF set up, a saving of £115 over the cheapest in the UK, not taking the £45 stacks into consideration, which would make it a saving of nearer £160

THESE CARBS HAVE ONLY HAD 30 MINUTES LIGHT USE ON A DYNO AND ARE MINT! LIKE NEW ONLY BETTER DUE TO THE STACKS...

Only reason for selling is that i'm now going to be running 45 dellortos

£300 for carbs and velocity stacks or £270 for carbs without... i'll even have them jetted to whatever spec you want before you pick them up...

Can't say fairer than that...

Hello people,
I am after some advice on DCNF weber set up, I have a brand new Remtec 1641 for my 71 notchback.
The Webers are 40 dcnf's with 30 chokes.
The carbs are in good shape, in fact I bought them off a guy in this forum about a year and a half ago (Paddy Coope???) for my ratty fastback which I sold in favour of my new Aussi import Notch.
Any way!...I would like some advice on jetting and set up, the carbs were not fitted to a flat 4 previously so I want to check that the jets etc are close enough to run the engine in.

At present they have, 145 mains, 210 airs, F36 emulsions, 55 Idles. Is this set up good for my engine? Can you please tell me the ideal set up for my engine for everyday road use? Any advice on where to set everything to start with!? Any further advice or information on my set up would be greatly appreciated.
Also where best to get it rolling road set up, near enough to Surrey?

Thanks in advance...

Hi,

I had biult up six years plus of no claims discount but due to restoring my car i've been out of the insurance game for a couple of years. I have written proof from my previous insurer that i have thes no claims. Are there any insurers that anyone knows of that will give me a no claims discount despite being without insurance for more than 2 years? Its about 2 years and 4 months since my policy expired and all the ones i've looked at on the internet seem to require you to have written proof within 2 years?

thanks for any thoughts - Tom

i have recently built a 1776 for my bus - have done about 3000 miles - its all tuned, adjusted etc however it has a backfire whic doesnt seem to be exhaust related - it happens when the engines undr load as well as under deceleration but not at idle - i havent investigated much yet - however i havent been very happy with the performance of the engine either - its storng but im sure there should be more power there. Im thinking its a valve problem (i will do a comp. test) but would appreciate input/thoughts on where to look - its a regular poping through the exhuast and is very annoying! Its not lean mixture and timing and tappets are set spot on.Its firing on all four but idle is a little lumpy until warm.
Spec is 1776 - 40 drlas, engle 110, JMR semi hemi heads, hd springs, boltsu rockers, fully balanced crank etc, stock f/w, comp 7.0:1, petonix flame thrower ignition, 009 i think thats all thats potentiall relevant (its hard to remember!!!) - no amount of tweaking the engine solves the probs - so would i be right to expect sticky/non selaing valve - is this where i should look next or am i up the wrong tree!
Ref performance - well it revs up to 5500rpm fine in low gears - just seems to run out of steam/ lack torque at about 80mph / 4000rpm - am I expecting too much? my old 1641 used to do better!I feel like it should pull stronger.
any ideas whats going on here? cheers for any thoughts.
