I have a 1962 Karmann Cabby Beetle thats been sitting in my garage for the last five years. Everything on it is original. The convertible top and interior are in great condition. The body has damage to the left front quarterpanel and to the right rear quarterpanel. The engine needs a ton of work (it doesn't run at all), but the tranny is in good shape. I'd like to sell the car, but have no idea as to what it's worth. Can somebody out there give me some idea of what to ask? I will appreciate any and all replies.

I'm running a 1600 with twin dellorto 40's, elec ignition and a merged exhaust. I'm looking into some easy bolt on IMPROVEMENTS for the engine. I tried a 1.25.1 rocker kit but had nightmares with pushrod lengths tube widths etc so gave up before it cost too much. I was wandering are just the bolt up shafts worth investing in? I seem to have quite alot of noise coming from the valvetrain and wondered if this would help, i tried swivel feat on standard rockers but they were too long so i'll stick with standard for now. Also would a mild 1600 gain any benefits from a CDI unit such as the mallory? the petronix was a great investment and wondered if i could take the ignition side further, any other reccomendations greatly appreciated, cheers

Subject: Heat exchangers - how restrictive?

Author:

Date Posted: 10:29:15 10/20/03 Mon

I asked this question on Volkszone but seems that no-one knows.......
Just how restrictive are the heat exchangers ? I think the std bore size is 29mm (1 3/16) so does it make a lot of sense having a 1 5/8 header, for example ? I know its possible to get a 35mm (1 3/8)one which must give some improvement. How much of an issue is this - I'm running a 1776, std heads and twin 34ict's .
I don't fancy no heaters in the winter !!
Also - I've seen some ceramic heat exchangers but are there SS ones available?
Thanks

1986 White Crewcab. RHD. Lowered with Porsche front seats. Modifcations to fit Rover V8, 4 speed early 6 rib gearbox with Rover V8 Conversion kit (UVA, very rare and thin so the engine fits). Porsche 928S4 wheels and adaptors. Square headlights including new headlights, good unbroken original grill etc. Comes with Rover bits to build an engine. Late 3.5 block, 4.2 crank (77mm) making a 3.8 engine when built. New pistons, New rings, SD1 heads, SU carbs and manifold. Vitesse exhaust manifolds, downpipes and exhaust sytem all built to fit. SD1 electronic ignition system.
Spare rear door, new cubby door for N/S. Spare engine cover. Some surface rust but more the most solid T25 I have ever owned.
With all the goodies on it, you would be looking at over £1500 to replace the parts.
£1000 for quick sale or I'll break it and sell the parts seperatley.

I have a 2000cc air cooled T4 engined transporter (1982 T25) and I love it...it flies but I want to carry out an engine rebuld as I know little of it's history. While I am in there I thought I would add a little more power. I don't realy want to increase the capacity, I was thinking more like head work, free flow exhaust, cam and adapting some Bosch mechanical fuel injection to it or maybe an emerald EFI system. ( i am an engineer so tech stuff is no problem for me)

It has the stock single throat carbs at the moment that work OK (!)

What kind of power/torque increase can I expect with those mods? Does anyone have any good T4 tuning ideas? Thanks.

She's RHD, 1200 6-volt motor, recon transmission & brakes, white on red paint (fresh) & very straight. No interior but very solid. Lookin' for around £7K for her...

I'll be collecting her from Tilbury on Wednesday so if you are interested, drop me a line & I can send you some snaps.

Got a problem with my beetle out of nowhere. Been running great and all of a sudden it is missing and sounding like it's running on 2 or 3 cylinders when I accelerate. If I really put my foot down hard it smooths out and it's fine at high revs. It is idling fine aswell.

I thought about an inlet manifold leak, but have searched everywhere and don't think this is the case.
Also thought about blocked idle jets, but wouldn't this affect idle speed also? I blew the jets out anyway and the problem is still there.

The carbs are Dellorto 40DRLA's on a 1776cc motor.

i've got the new bearings, cam and crank assembled into the left half of the case, and i've just looked at my gasket set and got very confused. i found 6 fat o-rings which obviously go over the big fat case studs around the main bearings, but then i found 4 other smaller o-rings in the set as well, and i can't guess where they go. i got the new flywheel o-ring, and the distributor driveshaft one, but god knows what these o-rings are for. can anyone shed any light???

I have come by a T4 motor (incidently, has been built some years ago by John Maher, though I don't know it's internals) and I was wondering what work is involved in fitting it into my early Bay. It has all the original tin and I also have a tow bar fitted.

The tow bar is vital to me and is designed with 2 drop arms of the main chassis legs with a horizontal connecting bar under and in front of the engine mounting bar. This supports the bracket that holds the tow ball and there is another bar that bolts through the engine 'tray'(kit supplied by JustKampers.

Before I splash out on this 2ltr lump, I would like to know if it will fit.

Will it fit between the chassis legs for example?

Bell housing?

Helphelphelphelp....!!!

Cheers,
Rob B.

I have a 1 5/8 fully merged exhaust system (pheonix i was told by vendor but not sure0 anyway it is to be fitted to my 1776 in my 1970 baywindow. However the exhaust is clearly only for a beetle as it will not clear the chunky engine support bar as found in early bays. Is anyone out there running a fully merged header in their early bay - if so where do i get one ? am in a rush so anything considered stainless, or mild steel, custom or off the shelf whatever i can get first! It must be 1 5/8ths and a quality system with J-tubes - any links, phone numbers etc all gratefully recieved - yes ive already looked on JMR and its not what im after.

Hi be glad of some help Re. cam choice.
I'm putting together a 1914cc. 69mm c/w crank, 94mm B&P etc
Not sure on head choice as yet.
But i have a Engle 110, Scat C25 or Scat C35 i can use.
I believe because I've got bigger B&P the power range is further up the scale than a larger crank, or so i've read. I want to keep a good low power range for traffic light grandprix etc. It is a weekend car really not a dailey driver. Any body been in a similar situation??

The car being offered is in A1 condition and during it's restoration no expense was spared. It was built to be an extremely fast and reliable street car.

It's a 1973 1300 bug painted in Mazda Canarian Blue (metallic aqua), totally de-chromed, fitted with a '52 W engine lid with cabrio vents, pre '67 long bonnet, 1 piece tinted windows, Empi 8 spokes. The interior features black Bugpack Pro Car seats with matching rear seats. It also has a 3 disc Alpine head unit driving over 800 watts. Catagory 1 alarm fitted

The car is also fitted with 4 wheel disc brakes

The motor spec is as follows
2332cc

84mm Scat Volkstroker 2 Pro Comp crankshaft
12.5 lb Scat chromoly flywheel
Bugpack 5.500" porsche journal con rods
Rimco Race case, this has been smoothed off inside to reduce oil frothing. It has aslo had the lifter bores bushed with bronze bushes to accomodate the 12mm lifters. This additional work was carried out in Germany by Oliver Knuf at Power Tuning Parts.
Gene Berg 30mm oil pump and non releif pump cover.
Schleicher 209.6 Cam, 258deg duration @ 0.050", 0.362 lift at the cam
Power Tuning Parts 39 gramme lifters
Aircooled.net aluminium pushrods
CB Street Eliminator heads fitted with nimonic 42x37mm valves (these are approx 20% lighter than stainless steel and are much more durable) and Remmelle valve springs and Remmelle ally retainers.
1.25 rockers on bolt up shafts
This all results in an extremely light and reliable valve train, it has been used by all the top Kafer Cup teams in Germany.
94mm Weiseco pistons in Century Cylinders
48mm Dellorto carbs sitting on shortened Bugpack manifolds.
1 3/4" stainless header and turbo style muffler from VW speedshop in Manchester
9.5 to 1 compression ratio
Cooling the motor is done by a GWD fanshroud using an original Porsche cooling fan and 90 amp alternator, and it does run really cool (approx 160 deg F).

Mated to the above is a Berg 5 speed transmiossion built by Jim Kaforski at Der Transaxle in Anaheim, CA.. It features a gusseted case, Erco 3.78 1st, 2.21 2nd, 1.48 3rd, 1.04 4th and a 0.89 5th. A snap ring superdiff has also been installed along with a 3.88 ring and pinion and Sway a Way race axles. Holding this in place is a Berg 5 speed front mount and a Bugpack solid rear mount and a Custom Speed Parts trapeeze bar tieing it to the rear shock mounts.

Well, that covers most of the goodies on the car but there are a lot more so call me for more info

I have recently upgraded to a 1600cc engine with twin 36 Dells. I just took it to get tuned for the first time this week and my mechanic told me that because i am running a stock cam heads and valves the engine is gettin far too much fuel.

He recommended that i either change jet sizes or more suitably swap the twins for a single dual choke Weber which he recons will have better performance and economy. I know the twins will be more expensive to run but in there current state they are drinkin too much, you can smell it in the car!

Has any one got any suggestions or solutions? Does anyone know the best jet sizes which would be most suitable for a stock 1600cc block?

Thank you

Hi,
I own a 1962 bug which I just rebuilt a 1600 dp w/Engle 110 & dual 40mm Solex's. I replaced the heads with Mexican VW heads since old ones were cracked. I set up the rocker arm geometry and set the valve lash at .006". Total run time on motor is approx. 1-1.5 hrs. Checked valve clearances yesterday (8/10/03) and #1 and #2 were tight, even with adjuster screws backed out all the way. Is it possible that the valve seats were not properly seated from the factory?

Thanks for any help in this matter,

or maybe i will stick with 15" gemmini wheels, 15" tyres are much cheaper.

All the petrol stations in my area seem to have phased out LRP - cannot find it anywhere. Have filled up the last two times on unleaded. I run an unmodified 1970 1500cc and I assume that 30 odd years of motoring have coated the valve seats as everything seems fine (at the moment). How long can I run unleaded for without a proper conversion ? Should I get this done asap i.e. am I doing more harm than good in delaying getting the work done ?
Also, can anyone a recommend a good paintshop for full respray in the SE London (Sutton / Croydon / Purley) area.

As you may or may not know we have just launched the website www.best2bid.co.uk which is essentially like ebay but easier and cheaper, in fact it's so cheap it's free for a while.

Anyway my point is that i have added a very concise aircooled section for everyone to use, and if you feel there is a catagory left out just tell us and i will add it.

Anyway the aircooled section is here
http://www.best2bid.co.uk/categories.php?parent=336

I will be registering a domain for this section as well, so wouldn't mind a few recommendations for the domain name, mail us at webmaster@best2bid.com

And finally remember you can fix price items, so it is like classifieds as well, so if you are selling anything you can put the one advert on there and then just post a link everywhere else, so you can get some free piccies up :)

I know there's not a lot on there but we have only be online for a few days but will be getting pretty big when everyone starts using it and the search engines kick in.

how high can you raise the rear suspension above the stock setting without risking wheel-tuck. my custom bug is currently lowered at the back but I want to raise it so that I can fit a couple of 15" General chunky tyres that I can get cheap (orriginally designed to fit a Rolls Royce) which will look trick and increase my cruising speed.
I like to take corners fast so I really don't want one of my wheels clapsing underneath the car and I can't afford one of those camber compensator kits.
I've fitted the rear with KYB Gas-A-Just shocks which are pretty hard so hopefully the tyres won't rub the wheel arches.

Hi Guys,
Can anyone help? I've just rebuilt my 1600 American spec fuel injection engine, and can't get it to fire. Has anyone got any experience with these things that could offer some advice? Or should I tear it all out and fit twin carbs!?!
Thanks, Dave

i have a set of cb super rods when assembling them they say to use grease on the threads of the arp bolts and then torque, would loctite be better... generally i would use loctite but the manufacturer says otherwise.

Subject: Autogauge Monster Tach with Shift-Lite problem!!!

Hi everyone,

I have an Autogauge Tach and Shift-Lite that I wired up last Autumn and that functioned ok. The problem is that it only worked for one race meeting and now has the following behaviour...

Ignition on and the gauge powers up enabling you to twiddle the button and set the shift point desired. No problem so far. Start engine and the needle then responds by moving up the scale irratically and eventually sticking off the scale. Also, the shift-lite does not work despite the bulb being ok. Also, when operating the line lock button, the needle flicks around sharply. If the power is switched off and then back on again without waiting for a few minutes then the needle remains stuck and no adjustment can be made with the twiddly button, but after a few mins you can adjust!

I run a 009 dissy with a Pertronics magnetic ignitor and a Pertronics Flame Thrower coil with a Micro Dynamics smooth cut over-rev limiter. Disconecting the limiter and all other non essential electrics makes no difference.

Can anyone help? I was wondering if its the gauge thats stuffed or maybe a compatability thing with the pertronics stuff. I know there is no ballast resistor in the flame thrower coil, should I use one?

Cheers,

Rob B.

The workshop will be closed for a few days while John is having some tests carried out in hospital. At this stage it looks like he'll be away from work for a week but I'll post an update as soon as we have more information. Sorry for any inconvenience.

Subject: JMR 5 speed

Although the website states that a JMR 5 speed isn't recomended on an enginge with less than 100bhp, would it still work adequately in a 1300 Beetle with a 1600cc running dual kadrons, bosche 009, 4-1 turbo trip exhaust?
I'm currently running a GT gearbox but need an extra gear as I will soon have to be doing regular (weekly) one and a half hour motorway drives so need a higher and more relaxed/economical cruising speed.
Also - what would be the fitting costs on top of the £2600.
Does anyone have any answers (maybe John Maher himself)?
I would be intending in getting a more powerful engine at a later stage however as funds are limited at present I need to make my daily driven bug more practicle or I'm going to have to bite the bullit and sell it.

Just dissasembled an engine that has less than 4,000 miles on the clock which was running CB 044 cylinder heads. To my amazement the valve guides were absolutley, and I mean absolutely like I've never seen before, kippered! The exhaust guides were bad but the inlet valves were just floating in the guides like they were one milimeter too small! Has anyone experienced this before? John? Btw... the cam was a 120 with 1.25:1 rockers.
