There are pipes that connect the two manifolds together for the idle circuitry, which is as you say is located in an auxilliary on the left hand carb. The rubber elbows and joining pipe perish, allowing air in and thus weaken the mixture and causing a miss-fire.
Squirting WD40 over a suspect pipe sometimes briefly seals the leak, cures the miss-fire and ideantifies your problem. Other times its a matter of pulling each rubber off for a good inspection.
If they haven't been replaced recently, why not just replace them anyway, they're about £5 each.
The other area to check is the vacuum pipe between the manifold and the distributor, leaks and breaks in this will cause similar problems.
Of course, I could be wrong!!
