Subject: Modified 041's - Help needed.

Hi -

I've just got hold of a pair of modified 041 heads (came included with carbs & other stuff I bought)

One head is good, the other is cracked between the valves.

One head is no good to anyone, so could anyone out there help me by either selling me a similair spec 041, so I have a pair - or does someone else want to buy my good one to make up a pair for themselves ?

Here's the spec. -

41 mm inlets, 35 mm exhausts, light port & polish, opened up for 94mm pistons, spark plug hole in original location.
Stainless valves, dual valve springs, cromoly retainers.

I reckon about £50 either way for a good head. As long as the valve sizes are the same and the head hasn't been seriously ported out, then I don't mind, I can change the rest.

I know it's a long shot, but if you don't ask, you don't get !

In the June 2002 issue of Volksworld is featured a beetle with a 1.9 wbx engine installed.Yes sure this is not something new I know that.That I would like to know is what radiator & cooling fan he is using as I would like to put the radiator in the engine bay as this guy has.Any info , any picture or just your comment are very welcome.

Can anyone help?
I have a second hand (but good condition) solex 30 pict 3 that I want to fit on my VW T2 van, (1600cc single port),
I know that these carbs were fitted to VW van around 1969 to 71..ish, and I believe they were also fitted to
Beetles 1300cc, 1500cc. The problem is I don't know the history of the particular carb, and I'm not sure it is jetted correctly for my application.

I need to establish the size of 4 jets in total,
1)Main jet, 2)Air correction jet, 3)pilot jet (Fuel), and 4)...a fourth one for which I can only find the German for 'zusatz kraftstoff duse' Which I think is a pump jet… but it may be an idle air jet???,

The current carb jets are..
1) X112.5
2) 170W
3) 65
4) 55

With this set up the engine seems to run hot and I suspect to lean, I also tried tried a 127 main this fouled the plugs and sent the fuel economy down to 14 mpg.

can anyone possibly tell me what jets I actually require, and better still where I can get them?

(all other parts of the engine check out all ok, correct timing valve clearance, no air leaks etc…)

Can anyone help? i have just done an oil change on my 1600 beetle. i filled with 2.5 litres of oil but the level on the dipstick is on the minimum mark. is 2.5 litres the correct amount or maybe i have the wrong dipstick.

The first is a 1700cc block (open breather tower). The heads are off and the engine is in need of a complete rebuild. Asking £100.
The second is 2000cc block (sealed breather tower). This is out of a '80-'83 Vanagon, was used in a 914 for a little while.

I need some advice on a few things!

When restoring my bug, i added some extra electrics - extra dials, alarm & central locking and an amplifier but my battery now regularly runs flat. Is my altenator strong enough to charge my battery for these extras? (i have a heavy duty battery) Would it be worthwhile investing in a new altenator or can i fit an alternative from a golf or something with more charging capabilities?

When reversing, my gearbox keeps popping out of gear alot, is this an internal gearbox problem or could it be a poorly fitted clutch? should i replace the box?

Also has anyone tried a subaru engine conversion? Anygood - worth the effort? Need more power so looking for a good 1600 or bigger engine to replace my 1200 preferably in N. Ireland!

Can anyone help me? I'd like to know more about the gorgeous 1303 on the Classifieds page of Volksworld every month. It is not for sale, but advertises the Classifieds. It appears on the order form and is dark purple, with the reg NGR543, Belgian. I think it has had a full feature in Volksword, but if anyone knows which issue, I'd love to know cos I'll get myself a back issue. I've just stripped out a 1850cc type 1 motor (had head & valve damage)
It came with 88mm pistons (nasty slip in 1679cc type), a 76mm stroker crank and a Sig Erson cam.

The engine was built in 1982 / 83, and has seen only 5,000 miles since then (in a VW Nova kitcar)

It's my first time dealing with stroker cranks, (I'm intending to build a 2.1 street motor using it and 94mm pistons.)

What I need to know is - what have I got ?
is it cast or forged (I guess it's cast but I'm not sure), Any idea of the manufacturer ?

If it is cast, what's the best way of using it - do I need to limit the revs by going for smaller venturi's in the carbs ?

Also what about the cam ? it's a Sig Erson cam and has the numbers 3-73 and 2022A stamped on the cam gear. The end of the cam itself is stamped ERSON H1 V2, and below that, FC and 43. I can't find any useful info on Erson cams - can anyone help ?

Can anyone tell me exactly what has to be done to weber 36's from an alfa to make them work on a VW, apart from re-jetting and buying manifolds/filters etc?

I've heard that one of the fuel outlets need to be plugged, and also some stuff about drilling and tapping the top but some people say that its possible to pretty much bolt them straight on.

Due to plans for a bigger motor this lot has to go :-
1 pair Weber 34 ICT's, twin port manifolds & filters to fit T1 / T2. (no linkage)
Have only covered approx 6000 miles from new on my mates 1641 bug, were removed when the crappy hex bar linkage fell apart.

Need a push/pull type linkage for best results

I belive they're "factory jetted" for a 1600, but they ran sweet on the 1641.

£200 - can take to Dubfreeze,

Also 2 engine cases -
1500 "H marked" type 1 case, single relief valve, oil pressure switch on top of case, good overall condition, never been line bored, no endfloat but bearing saddles showing a little wear (only just) Could do with a 0.5mm (first) line bore to make it right. Cleaned & degreased, would suit period resto bug.

£20. can bring to Dubfreeze

Also 1600 "AD" type 1 case, dual relief valve, good condition, ready to use, cleaned & degreased, painted black. has had approx 3000 miles (max) since having a first linebore (0.5mm). Bearing saddles good, no endfloat on previous bearings. 10mm head studs, Case studs visible in engine bay have been replaced with stainless steel studs.

£30 Can bring to Dubfreeze.

Hi folk

Im just putting the finishing touches to my buggy. First drive out around the street last week and its running really well, except that upon when applying throttle and releasing the clutch im getting a really bad judder and the back axle is hopping up and down. The clutch has about 1.5" freeplay before take-up.

Its a swing axle 1971 gearbox. Someone has suggested that I may have the incorrect clutch release bearing. I have a "late" clutch fitted to the engine. Does the 1971 box have the correct clutch release bearing?

Would this give these symptoms if i do have the wrong one fitted?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated - before I drop the engine out.

Been advised to use a 115 main jet with 27 ventury, so what should the matching air correction, idle,acc pump jets be??

Pair of 10" x 15" wide five,mirror polished two piece alloys - similar looking to erco/ centerline. These have a huge offset and would only really fit a buggy - but would they look sweet!

I'm looking for info on the new all aluminium engine cases as I'm planning a 2L motor with 94mm pistons. The only spare case I have is an old single releif valve case, it's in good nick and been clearanced, but I'd rather have a new one to build a big motor on.

So are they any good ? Do you have any or reccomend them John ?

If so, would the prices be roughly the same as the AS41 cases in the store at the moment ?

Any other info on them would be welcome.

i want to meaure the CR of a second hand engine ive just bought. it is a 1600 , with somw sort of cam and is fully flowed for oil . i can get the discs cut drilled etc to exact size to measure the cc of the head - what is the exact diameter i get it cut to? i presume it is the outer diameter of the cylinder ? any ideas ? thanx mikey

Just testing the water at the moment, I'm considering building another buggy but this time I want a decent motor.
Ideally I want a 1776+ with decent cam, heads and carbs which is producing a reliable 100+ BHP.
A complete bolt in unit would be best but anything will be considered.
Any engine ofered must be new, low mileage or recently rebuilt.

Also looking for a set of Centrelines or Ercos, pair of 4" and a pair of 7"+

Since the recent snowfall, I've had trouble starting my car (1500cc, original with no modifications). Once started, it then idles fine. However, a blip on the throttle and it then dies, picks up again and / or stalls. Sometimes it starts, idles okay and I then attempt to drive it - trouble is, any attempt at acceleration sends the car into 'bunny hops' up the road, cutting out, restarting etc and it then finally cuts out. Takes up 5 mins before it will start up again and I go through the same cycle.
I assumed I had damp / water in the electrics so I've stripped and dried the rotor arm, points etc, checked the leads, dried the plugs, checked the carb but all no good. I cannot solve the problem.
Am I missing the obvious ? - any suggestions greatfully received as I use the car for daily commuting and the trains are driving me mad !

A car we have purchased has a traction bar fitted.

Thing is it seems to be a bit loose, and im not sure how tight it should be.
its tight at the inner wing end :) but its where the uprights meet the bar.
It has a ruber block in the middle under the engine which is the only part that touches the engine , is this right. because of this even when its tight the bar can be rocked up and down at each end.

Does all that sound right?

1971 VW MicroBus

Early bay window model with roundy bumpers and Splitty small rear lights. This is a walkthrough model with a Devon conversion, featuring a 2 person Bed, a cooker, sink and fridge. The bus has a hard top and no crappy plastic boat attached to the roof. Its crying out for a full length rack. Hard tops aren’t as common as you think.

Body wise the bus is quite sound and doesn’t need any urgent welding repairs. Its all cosmetic and just depends upon on what you feel is acceptable and how far you want to go with it. The more you do the more it should be worth.
This bus has had its share of repairs in the past and although they are not to concourse standard they are competent.
It does have rust in the doors and sliding door but no holes or any thing dramatic, probably need a repair or replacing in a couple of years. The rear hatch is mint and the engine lid is also very good.
The original colour for this Bus was white but as you can see I have repainted in Satin Black with a white roof .It’s just easy to maintain and to touch up the paint if you get any scratches.

The bus was treated to a Brand spanking new Vege 1600 (1200quid bill to prove) with new heat exchangers in May 2002. The engine has covered less than 1000 miles since being fitted and is still under the manufacturers warrantee. Now that’s something you don’t get often when buying 30 year old Buses.

Mechanically the MicroBus has been virtually rebuilt with all new parts. All new brake hoses and lines, new discs, Brand new (not rebuilt) calipers from JK and new pads and fitting kit. All new shock absorbers and steering damper, all new German Balljoints and other fittings and all new German Track rods complete (not just the ends). The Front calipers have been painted Red to aid against corrosion and it seemed like a good idea. Not forgetting a brand New German Master cylinder.
The rear brakes have also been completely overhauled with, new drums and backplates both painted sporty red. Also new adjusters fitting kit, shoes and wheels cylinders. Also the bus has new handbrake cables just to finish things off. I have also fitted a new gearbox coupling to aid a more secure and positive shift.
The Bus is rolling on a complete set of brand new commercial tyres, with restored bus wheels painted white set off with brand new chrome hubcaps. The bus has a good spare tyre inside but also comes with an extra pair of wheels and tyres, just in case.

I have receipts for all the above parts and they were fitted less then 3 months ago.

GeneBerg Locking shifter not included.

I can supply two new doors and a brand new sliding door for around 350 squid, however that’s must be on top.

The Bus is TAX-exempt and the current disc is valid until March 03. The Mot is due and will put fresh MOT on the bus when it’s sold. I am just trying to get it booked in with Mechanic I use. However if you buy before I can do this we can negotiate a cheaper deal.

My Bug has a 1641cc engne running a weber progressive. I'm searching for a few mods to make it a little hotter. Was thinking of changing to dual 34icts, what difference would this make? Should i get dual 40's? If i were to rebuild it, should i install a counterweighted crank, hot cam and ported heads? Are these mods worth doing to 1641?

Or should i save my money for a BIGGER, properly built from scratch engine?

As it says, bonnet for sale! Has a few chips, and the odd rust spot where a stone chip has been left untreated etc, the worst being about 30-40mm across, but nothing a good rust treater won't cure. There are no dents (that I can see) and no rot in the top corners. The bottom by the handle will need a small crack repairing. All in all, this is a good honest genuine bonnet!

This is a complete kit as delivered from Technics, plus extras, plus it has been registered and is tax exempt.
I believe it is possible to transfera six-digit plate onto this legally.
It is RHD.

It is in glossy black gel coat, with just a few very minor blemishes.
The chassis needs repainting.
It has new brakes all round, new tyres on 5-stud wheels, the gearbox and shafts are detailed and in place, there is an engine, believed good.
The loom and lights are fitted.
This is the pukka mid-engined car, with the original very authentic tube frame chassis, torsion bar front end and swing axle rear, exactly like the real car.
The chassis is so accurately copied, they have been used in restoration of original 550's worth 400,000!
It needs the seats, instruments and interior, steering wheel, and badges.

I would like 2400 pounds please, and will deliver at reasonable cost.
This is a fraction of the basic kit price from Technics, and this is the more authentic, early chassis which is only availabel on special order now.

pair of CSP carbon fibre running boards. they weigh nothing!! and look as cool as you like! 2 years old, good nick on the whole, but a few minor scratches, hence £140 ONO (thanks to the introduction of the euro on the continent, they are now £195 new + shipping!) these are ideal for the lightweight obsessed DRC'ers out there!

also a pair of brand new, never used flat rear 74-on rear lights. smoke/grey lens. they replace the elephants foot unit completely, and have integral coloured bulb covers so you dont need amber or red bulbs, just normal clear ones. they will pass MOT's as they have red stop/tails, amber indicators and clear reverse light sections.
for these i want £60 firm.
(cost me £65 to import personally and took 3 months! save yourself time and money!)

The front passenger side of my 1972 1300 1600cc custom bug rides about 2 inches higher than the front driver’s side. The previous owner solved this problem by having one permanently bottomed out longer damper on the front driver’s side. After about 10 months of daily use I got a bit fed up of having no suspension and so had a puma adjustable front beam put in with bug pack shortened dampers and long travel ball joints. The problem now being that the Beetle looks really good and low on the driver’s side, but stupid and high on the passengers. I had a talk to my local air cooled specialist garage about this (I thought that the front torsion leaves might be worn from having just drivers driving alone in the car on the driver's side for much of it's life) however they said that most Beetles sit unevenly irrespective to the torsion leaves.
Has anyone got any cost effective solutions to this problem that will still maintain a comfortable ride (adjustable pneumatic suspension would be great but I'm a relatively poor student and so can't afford it).
Any help would be great,

I've just got hold of a decent 'reconditioned' engine, but know none of its history. My main concern is, when was it reconditioned as I need to know if it was set up for unleaded or not. The only clue is a small metal plate which has been riveted over the original engine number (it shows 5556-AB- 439040), does anyone know which company tags their engines in this way. I've got to whip one of the heads off anyway, so is there anyway of visually telling if an engine is unleaded or not?

This is not definite but it looks like I'm gonna have to sell my 1835.
This is just the bottom end, hence no carbs, clutch, tinware/fan/alternator, rockers covers etc.
But, includes full flowed case with external cooling, 200mm flywheel (not 8 dowelled), barrels, pistons, heads, rockers, fuel pump etc etc. However I could be persuaded to part with top end for a nominal fee...
Not sure of the internal spec but ran 16 sec quarters a couple of years ago with no tuning. Will burnout easier than Jonny Vegas running the 100 metre sprint!

i was thinkin about buildin an engine for my notch, and was thinkin 1776cc. I was wonderin if anyone had any advice on spec as i know it weighs alot more than a beetle.
dont want anythin mad as it is a daily driver but still want it to pull well.
