Would stock cooling work with this Combo?

Considering a Type 4 cooler in place of the stock one, would this overcool?

Currently running a Mocal 13 Row instead of the stock cooler am not overly happy as it has to be run under the car and I have hit it in the past.

Have just had a 1776 fitted in my bus. All is fine except the oil pressure is giving me hassles. I have the dual vdo sender unit and vdo gauge. When driving the oil pressure is about 20psi. However, when slowing down and accelerating (say at lights) it drops to about 10psi. I'm not so bothered about this (i don't think?!), but the fact that occasionally the pressure gauge reading totally drops to 0psi and the warning light comes on. A quick rev and were back up to 20psi again. No oil leaks anywhere......

Any suggestions anyone?????

Thanks

Hi,
I'd like to know where the differences in dimensions are between the 1200 and 1300 engines. I know the rear exhaust boxes for both are about an inch difference in width, is this because the block is narrower on the 1200, or are the barrels shorter?
The reason I need to know is because I have a 1200 engine in the garage (a 1300 in the car) and I want to put larger pistons/barrels on the 1200, with a pair of baby Dell Orto's I have, but am worried about the pistons hitting the valves due to wrong stroke lenghts or an incorrect compression ratio etc.
Does anyone have any advice or experience regarding this build option?
Thanks, N.

For anybody that may be interested i have just finished the development of a roller cam kit for the type 4 engine. The test engine is a 2730cc speedway engine running a set of pauter pro series heads and 58mm throttle bodies with constant flow injection. This engine runs on methanol and is currently producing 330hp.I have had the engine down to check the cam etc.and evrything looks great.I will be producing these kits for the serious type 4 engine builder, unfortunately their is some welding and machining which needs to be carried out to fit the kit so it will not be a drop in fit. However after many years of research i have found that a roller cam is the only way to go for ultimate horsepower. The test engine has been run to 8000rpm constantly and their is more in it yet.If you are interested contact me.

I am looking for info about wastegates. I have already seen the one from CB performance that can be manually adjusted to 'dial in' a PSI. However, I was wondering if there were any electronic gizmos that could be used to 'dial in' exactly the boost required?

Does anyone know of any other options to a spring loaded piston type...and if so, is it more reponsive? (i.e. cracking pressure of piston can be around 5-6 PSI below boost limit)?

Thanks!

I am building a 356 and have been more than concerned with the new regulations. I sent off my Reg document a week or so ago and I got a reply along this line. They want to know whether I have carried out a kit conversion on this. I suppose I have to reply ‘yes’

The next question concerns me though…as follows…..Please describe briefly the changes made to the vehicle including modifications to the chassis/bodyshell and, if possible, provide photographs before and after the change.

What the hell do I do, as far as I can see it would be a disaster if any car had to go through a SVA test; am I right? Emissions worry me too, I am right in thinking that it will be treated like a modern car etc….

Please can you Let me have your thoughts on how to reply to this form, I don’t really want t to say its an ‘Altered’ chassis…

Many thanks

Hi folks.
Just seen the new Volksworld and now I have a bee in my bonnet about Dick Landy Industries superchargers. Can anyone give me any details about them, ie Uk suppliers, parts availability and prices etc etc. Also, has anyone actually fitted one of these monsters, and what sort of performance has it given you and what could I expect from my lump? At the moment I'm running an 1835 with twin dellorto 44s, and some of the right bits. Runs a 16 sec pass which although is respectable, is not enough.
My other option is an impreza conversion, and get rid of the 1835 entirely. Again, does anyone have any prices, details, supplier names or personal experience of running an alternative engined V-dub?
Lastly, I'm keen to know which of these two conversions is gonna best suit me for occasional summer driving and the occasional drag strip blast, in terms of reliability, economy and gut wrenching power. Help!
Thanks in advance for any replies.

I'm looking for any of the following in exchange for my carbs:
either a set of 90.5mm B&P's,(or 94's)and A recon or good used turbo.
Or A set of big Valve heads (044's or similar).
The carbs are Dellorto 40 DRLA's in very good condition, converted Alfa units that have been disassembled, thorougly cleaned and have a light coating of grease to protect them while they've been stored under my bed (does everyone else use it like an indoor garage?). They spring back perfectly, and feel very 'tight' (I don't mean the siezed tight - I mean the good tight).
The manifolds, linkage and air cleaners are all part of the superior CB Performance kit(160 quid or thereabouts) and are new unused and boxed.
The manifolds are of the 'big beef' design with extra material at the head end to allow for serious porting.
The linkage is the hex bar kit which is reckoned to be one of the best.
The air filters are the K&N style with cast tops & bottoms.
The whole lot comes with all the little bits, bobs & instructions still shrink wrapped so you know nothing is missing.

Or 350 quid ono for the full set!

Oh by the way, I'm located in the North Staffs area.

Thanks guys. I can email detailed pics if required (I'll take a few tonight).

Subject: Wasserboxer heads on T1 block ?

Author:
Dave Whipp
[Edit]

Date Posted: 19:41:00 11/18/02 Mon

OK boys & girls - any wasserboxer experts out there ?
Some time ago I remember seeing a new wasserboxer head on the shelf in my local Autocavan outlet. It looked just like a stock aircooled T1 head with a water jacket instead of fins, and one (or two ?) water connection pipes attached to it.

What I'd like to know (in the intrests of research / experimentation & a warm car) is -
Can you bolt a wasserboxer head onto a T1 block?

If so, does it have a sealed water jacket, or will it leak like a sieve ?

What about fitting points for exhaust & carbs ? Will T1 rocker shafts bolt up OK ?

The water plumbing & pumping I can sort out, - I'm thinking electric pump pumping water through heads, then either through a radiator (fitted with fan & mounted over / alongside the gearbox), or through a heater matrix in the front of the car when needed (Mini heater maybe ?)

Finally, what of tuning ? thinking about 92mm B&P's, mild port & polish, maybe 3 angle job, single HD springs ?

Should be OK to run a power pulley to cool the rest of the engine with no overheating probs I reckon.

Any ideas / suggestions / ridicule welcome.

1974 Beetle. Its been stored in a garage for a couple of years and needs an MOT. Engine runs, brakes work. Shouldn't need much for MOT. I think the engine is a 1600. Clarion stereo. Comfy seats! Smoothed dash. Louvred decklid. £300 - bargain.

I am on the lookout for a pair of early front struts for an 1303 beetle with the three bolt triangle fixing (VW part no 113-412-031D).
I know I can use second hand units, but I don't want to take the front suspension apart again in a years time because of rotten spring cup retainers.
Some one informed me that you can obtain reconditioned units from Germany ( anybody know of an address? ).
Is there an modification where I can use a spring retainer cup from a Golf mk1 or early Polo and weld it onto my orignal strut. Can I purchase a new spring retainer cup from any where?
Has anyone out there got mint struts lying in there sheds? any advice would be helpful.

Subject: Advice on selling my 1960 bug...

Author:
Jamie Palmer
[Edit]

Date Posted: 12:40:17 11/04/02 Mon

OK, its a bit of a strange post, I know. I am looking to sell my bug because I want an earlyish (pre big bumper) Type 3. Its a 1960 bug with 11 months MOT in 70's cal look/race style, Lowred at the front with a set of Empi five replicas. Its got a 1300cc engine which runs fine. Its lovely shiny ruby red paint is still nice and shiny, but is starting to show its age - it was resprayed years ago. I've also done a bit of home pin striping in gold. Interior wise its a stripped out racer style with 1 front seat - a Newbury empi bucket seat. However, it does want work - the car is structurally sound its had some welding (the rear susp. panel + the front section of heater channel), but its going in a few annoying places with rust bubbles starting to show - these are along the seams of the roof and dwon at the front of the doors. It also needs a pair of doors and front wongs, both of which I've already got (genuine not repro bits). Its also had a steel sliding golde sunroof welded in at some point that was leaking and I've had to mastic up.
Question is, do I do the bits and primer it before I sell it, or would I be better off just flogging it for a bit less now? I'm fairly capable so could do all the work myslef, but I'm just nor sure if the increase in price would be worth the extra work.
What values could you guys expect it to be worth before/after? Do you think it would be worth the extra work?

I just want a type 3!!!

Date Posted: 08:12:08 10/28/02 Mon

The subject of my woes is a company called Volkspares, based in Sydenham. I bought a reconditioned air cooled block of them at the turn of the year, and re-built it using new barrels cylinder heads etc.

All was well until a few hundred miles, when the oil pressure light came on, but only when warm, at idle. After many telephone calls to volkspares, I was advised to check the pressure switch, pressure relief valves, oil pump and cooler for correct operation, all of which were new upon building the engine. After numerous new parts, the problem was still here, so I took a trip to Sydenham, in the vain hope they could solve this mystery.

All I was told was that my gauge wasn’t accurate enough, and the oil pressure light was red, not green, so that when the engine was hot and at idle, the generator light came on!!

I found this a ridiculous insult, as although I’m no expert, I do know how the car is put together, and I found this blatant fobbing off unacceptable.

So as a word of warning, to anyone looking to get a Volkspares reconditioned engine, THINK AGAIN, because, if you are anything like me, you will get absolutely no support, and possibly be treated like a moron.

Sorry for moaning on, but as you can see, I am well p***ed off.

Due to a change of plan, I have decided to let the stash of parts I’ve amassed to build my ultimate 2110cc T1 engine go. All parts from Berg, Scat, Pauter, Manley, CB Performance, Engle, Mahle, etc are brand new and unused, and most are in original packaging with instructions. The brand new AS21 crankcase has been clearanced for the 82mm crank, de-burred, oil galleries drilled & tapped, and comes with all genuine VW hardware. Apart from cylinder head castings, the ‘kit’ includes just about everything to build a stonking 2110cc short motor.

I also have for sale a pair of brand new CB Performance EFI inlet manifolds (with injector bosses) and 44mm throttle bodies.

I am building a 1776, engle 110, jmr semihemi heads,drla40s which will be pushing around my type 2. I am aiming for a long distance cruising engine so no radical CR but since I eventually aim to run LPG I wonder if i should set it slightly lower or higher or the same as normal. Also should i choose to up the CR a little from standard how much can I get away with before it becomes inpractical taking into account the above. And finally - I am wondering if i should fit the facet fuel pump and how these cope with LPG conversions? cheers

Ive got an 1835 type one motor to fit into my splitty, stock heads, c25 cam which carbs should i use for good all round use.
Also i want to fit porsche cooling but i understand this means losing the stock oil cooler and using a remote one is this sufficient? or is there a way of utilising the stock cooler.
Finally does anyone have an opinion as to which is the best kit on the market (porsche cooling for type 1 motor)
thanks a lot

Just wondered if anyone could tell me the optimum deck height for my 2007 ? I'm planning on increasing my CR from 8.5 and I would also appreciate some advice on how high a CR I can safely run with pump fuel?
The engine is to be used exclusively on the strip...

I need a replacement gearbox for my '67 beetle (1776cc, twin 40DRLA's, Engle 120 etc.). Could I get away with a good quality (recon? Volkspares?) standard beetle gearbox, considering I do not drive it hard all the time, just the occasional blast?

i have a problem with my bug,it won't start after a short run on a freshly charged battery. i had a problem with the starter the early part of this year and had it refurbished,i also fitted a new regulator at the same time.I fitted a voltmeter tester on the battery terminals when the engine was running (at tickover) the reading was between 13.5V and 14.5V even with lights on, cd player on,wipers on the voltage was still above 13V, i changed the battery to a larger unit and it only lasted a few times, would this be a problem with the starter rather than the battery or charging system.I'm running a dynamo on the car. if anybody could help me with this problem i would much appreciate it.

I have a 2007cc beetle with a full flow oil system. The engine was in the car when I bought it and has an oil cooler mounted under the car just ahead of the engine. The problem I have is that the engine gets hot at standstill, that's probably not all that unusual, but having investigated further I have noticed that the stock oil cooler within the fan housing has been bypassed. My intension is to plumb it back into the system but would like anyone's comments on the effect this may have e.g. will the oil pressure suffer? can the pump handle pushing oil around such a long trip?

Any advice on this matter is greatly appreciated.

I have a 1303s,with a 1600 engine, kerscher shocks on the front, standard discs up front and normal drums on rear.koni shocks on rear I think.
The problem is that I have an intermittent rumbling noise which is annoying me.
If I am driving along and ease off the accelerator, then I can hear a low rumbling noise coming from the left rear of the car.Once I press the accelerator again it goes.
The noise also appears when I am slowing down through the gears ,but stops if I apply the brakes, recurring when I take my foot off!!
I have taken it to a garage, who checked out everything, took the engine out, checked and regreased the bearings and cv joints, changed the clutch release bearing, because it was worn and also replaced the gearbox mounts whilst they were there as one was split and the other worn, changed the gearbox oil whilst he was there. He also checked out the front wheel bearings and all was fine!!
Got the car back, but the same rumbling noise exists.
Anybody got any ideas as to what it may be so I can have a few ideas before I go back to the garage,as i am a little worried in case it is a warning of something more serious to come!!

Cheers Jim.
