 I have a 97 type 1 mexican beetle with fuel injection and catalytic converter.If your bettle has fuel injection you need to keep the catalytic converter or else the onboard computer for the fuel injection will malfunction.If you have no fuel injection it is ok to dump the catalytic converter.By the way that computer box is underneath the left rear seat.
