Subject: King / Link pin / 356 question.

Author:
Dave Whipp
[Edit]

Date Posted: 22:37:48 09/17/02 Tue

I'm trying to build up a brand new set of king & link pin steering knuckles, so I can do a quick swap-over on my bug for it's MOT in a couple of months.
I've got all the parts bar 1 (or 2 if you count both sides)

It's the thrust washer that goes round the king pin, in between the two castings. It's the one with the extra hole in it to fit the locating dowel pin. The other washer is made of hard plastic (German king pin kit).

I seem to remember someone saying they were identical to the porsche 356 ones, except the porsche ones were made of some harder material ?

Any ideas on where I can get any - Preferably the porsche type, (if they fit), failing that the stock bug type? My German (Bilstein) king pin kit dosen't have them in.

Cheers - Dave.

Subject: Bypassed stock oil cooler!!!

I have a 2007cc beetle with a full flow oil system. The engine was in the car when I bought it and has an oil cooler mounted under the car just ahead of the engine. The problem I have is that the engine gets hot at standstill, that's probably not all that unusual, but having investigated further I have noticed that the stock oil cooler within the fan housing has been bypassed. My intension is to plumb it back into the system but would like anyone's comments on the effect this may have e.g. will the oil pressure suffer? can the pump handle pushing oil around such a long trip?

Any advice on this matter is greatly appreciated.

I am about to commence build up of my 1776 and have a new case - it seems to be covered inside and out with a thin but inconsistant golden waxy coating perhaps to preserve the case until use? - I presume it is advisable to remove this at least from contact surfaces? I have tried all sorts of stuff whitespirit/water/soap/ thinners etc etc as I feel this waxy stuff will effect the sealing of gaskets etc at least. Is there a well tested way of cleaning up the case - I have previously been recommended to use scotch brite - is this not a little too abrasive? Plese any advice on how best to prepare my case would be greatly appreciated. Cheers.

Hello ,

Just bought my 14 year old son a VW Beetle to try and restore. This apparently a 1300A on a 73 L plate. Can anyone tell me any more about this model. I have noticed that manuals are hard to come by. This has a flat windscreen and not an ordinary gearbox.
Can I trace the history of this car anywhere? Is the 1300A a rare model? As we are novices any advice welcome.

Has anyone any experience of the above problem. I am running a 1600cc VW Beetle engine, with a KENT cam in the Irish FVee Championship and my engine has developed a niggling oil leak. It only appears at high revs and only out on the track. we have tightened up the pump and checked everything else. We appear to have 2-3mm of movement in the cam at the pulley, obvioulsy not what is wanted. Is there any way to fix this? I thought of putting in a shim at the flywheel, but i'm not sure that this will solve the problem?

Can any one help?

I recently bought a type 1 that had a slightly custom 1600 motor (external filter, mild cam). Unfortunately, I seized the engine within 50 miles of driving. I suspect that the external filter was blocked, or the pump broken as there was no sign of the usual oil and gunge when I pulled off the rocker covers. I have stuck on a 1200 reoplecement.

Can anyone help out a novice by guessing which bits need replacing on the dead motor?

Hoping to buy a second hand motor soon, and wondered if anyone could help with performance figures - its a 2109cc motor, with CB 044 heads and 40 x 35.5mm valves, full port polish and 3 angle valve job. It also has a engle 125 cam, with straight cut gears and 125 ratio rockers.

The chap i'm looking to buy it from has got a 17.98 on the 1/4 mile, but this was in a bus - i'm hoping it will be considerabley quicker in a stripped out bug...?!

Does anyone have any clue as to what sort of 1/4 mile time, 0-60 time and top speed i could expect in a lightened 1972 bug with 1300 gearbox?

Bare 1964 (small window) shell, chassis/v5 for sale. shell was shot blasted, then all major welding repairs carried out. it was then electrostatically sprayed with etch prime (so all surfaces are covered). this is where its at now. it comes with origial engine in longblock form and gearbox as well as a fully rebuilt and restored front beam. the numberplate is a 5 digit one valued two years ago at £1000! Sale due to need space. based in Poole, Dorset. (south). cant realy post pictures as no digi camera. Still some very very minor bits of welding neede to complete a couple of repairs. this would make a great resto or race car project. Any offers? May sell just shell so i can keep reg number? Lee

1962 Beetle

This car has had a ground up re-build with photos to prove. Sandblasted shell with new panels and repainted outside, inside and underneath.. The underside is as a good as the top. Never been out in the rain! It has a new stock interior with Pioneer ICE. CSP brakes. 1776 full house engine, Empi wheels etc etc.

The car looks like new, all mechanicals are new or rebuilt with about 1000 miles on the oldest component and 5 on the newest! The down side is that the engine is down on power and one of the BAS silencers has a hole.

I have a huge file full of bills, history and photos.

I have lost interest in it and although it has cost me £8000 I will take £3500 to get shot. It is in the garage under a cover waiting to be used.

This is a real steal. A show car or just a smart every day car for the price of a knackered Ford Ka.

Email for photos and complete spec sheet.

I am looking for an engine that produces about 110-120bhp if possible, I guess it would have to be a 1776 or 1835? Also will it be possible to run an engine with this much power on a standard gear box?

Date Posted: 21:26:57 08/28/02 Wed

I have a pretty (2.3l) fast Type 3.
At the same time as I built the engine, I sorted the brakes and got hold of adjustable shocks etc.

I've been driving it for about 6 months now and I've got it pretty well sorted, except the steering.

It used to bump-steer like crazy....really terrifying, a pot hole could put you on the other side of the road.

I spent most of my time sorting the suspension and trying to get the toe-in correct.

I've got rid of most of the problems, but the car still suffers from some bump-steer (though much better than it was) and it wanders all over the road if you don't constantly correct the steering.

There doesn't seem to be any play in the steering and the damper is still working fine. I also checked the rear suspension and nothing is moving around back their, either. The toe-in is a little more than it should be, but that is to counteract the 195 section tyres I have on the car.

I was gonna accurately measure the arc of the front suspension and track rods and alter their length, if it proved to be neccesary, to eliminate the bump-steer completely.
Anyway, that got me thinking, and I started to wonder if there are any more modern steering racks available to replace the Type 3 rack.
I am quite capable of manufacturing splined adaptors to convert a T3 steering column to another cars rack, or lengthening track rods should it be required, but I was just wondering if anybody has done anything like this before, or if there is a well known solution.

I guess a power steering system would REALLY be to dogs 'nads, but running the hoses from the back....nah, forget it!

Thanks for any help. Cheers.

i bought a 1835 sometime ago still have not had the chance to run it, though i been told that my combination is killer for the street i have concerns.my 1835 was tapped for full flow and the case was aligned bored. a engle 130 cam was inserted with double thrust cam bearings,a stock german crank was used (69mm) then magnaflux and shotpeened. the heads are fully welded 044s with 42x37.5 stanless steel valves, a full port and polish 3 angle valve job with 1.25 to 1 rocker arms with solid shafts by autocraft. match ported top and bottom on scat super talls, with brand new dual 45 dellortos, msd distibutor advanced 30 degrees for drag racing, a 6a box, hellecore wires, bosch platnum spark plugs etc. lightened fly wheel 11.5, 1700lb pressureplate and a koshlok clutch. my compression is set at a high level of 12to1. so my question would be, would this motor be competitive at quatermile races, and would i be able to race chevys, hondas, mazdas, yoyo with out any problems.and since it has not been dynoed, what amount horse power would you say my engine produces. also what venturies should i use? please respond.

The engine was from my VW Transporter, T25 LHD that only had 2 owners.

2 Litre air-cooled motor (pulls like a train) as I drove it around for a while.. its a great motor.

The previous owner used it for a Tow car for his Lotus 7 special for European and home events and so has been well maintained. He really did take good care of this motor.

Anway the only thing I was gonna change on this engine was the carbs as I wanted better response.. i chucked out the carbs, but sold the webers i had for it aswell.

Anway this motor is complete with all tinware and evverything! Alt and dizzy are all there and so is the very good exhaust system.

I want £350 firm no offers for the motor.

Subject: This used to be the best forum for technical discussions by far. Sadly it has changed for the worse. Why can some people not accept that we all are different and all have a different taste and mostly do what we think is best for us? Do I have to have approval before I buy a TYPE IV or TYPE I motor??? I do not think so! Plus insulting other nationalties is not a nice thing! Most of the germans rate the british and their dubs very very high! Anyway please do not make any stupid remarks about this posting; I just drive a V-Dub!

Have hopefully just found a pair of stock(ish)looking 7" steel rims for the back of my super shitbox from CSP. Now i need to know (before i part with my cash!) how easily are these bad boys going to fit under stock rear wheel arches?
