Im trying to discover if you really can trust and go by the reputations of some Volkswagen restoration specialists. I took a 1192cc single port engine belonging to my other half to a specialist who's name i wont include. The engine had dropped a valve and was clunking and clattering with the best of them. The guy is charging £350 to remove and identify the fault. He rang my girlfriend and told her that the big ends had gone and and the valves and it would maybe need a new head etc. He suggested that it would be uneconomical to repair the engine and that she should get a new one instead this would cost £760 plus the initial £350 + VAT. I rang him the next day to speak to him and he informed me that he hadnt split the case but ran the engine in the car and concluded that in was knackered. I told him that the engine was making good compression and it had no end float to which he said he hadnt checked!! This assumption was of course included in the £350 inspection??. The engine is the original to the car and will be given away as core exchange in favour of a recon unit. The total cost of this being nearly £1350 including VAT. Now, is this the type of person you would trust with your Air-cooled baby? My partner who doesnt know much about this sort of thing is worried that doing anything other than replacing the engine will cause her grief. I would love to know if anyone out there thinks that this is a good deal? I guess it goes to show that some people see fit to rise above there reputations in search for a new level of incompetence.
I would love to know what you all think?

Its a shame that this forum has gone down hill due to the idiots that abuse it. Instead of being able to ask questions and chat about VW's to other enthusiasts, you have to sort through all the petty and useless comments from people that dont deserve to own such unique vehicles (if they do that is).

I dont know why John bothers to keep this open, a real pity after he took the time to develop such a site.

Am I doing something wrong or can you not use a berg linkage with a 36hp fan shroud? I can't seem to adjust it enough to be able to get full throttle. The deadstop point ( when its against the fan shroud ) just is'nt far enough back. If you can't use them with this fan shroud why is it not made common knowledge? Anyone got any ideas? By the way I'm using it with a pair of twin 40 webers on offset manifolds.

Hello from hot suffering Greece! If anyone please could help me on converting my steering box to a steering rack model. I know that there were beatles with steering rack fitted, but I can;t find any new-or-used. Please make your suggestions on what can be done (even with a steering rack from another car with all the modifications done by me). Note also that the car is LHD. I cant suffer anymore this heavy, lazy and uninformative steering of my car!!

Does anyone know the best way to wire up a electric fuel pump so that it is powered up by the ignition switch and then will cut out automatically when the engine stops/stalls etc, so in the event of a crash the pump doesn't continue pumping fuel. My pump is a facet interupter type.

Quit posting messages accusing people of selling stolen goods. If you know for sure the parts have been stolen, contact the relevant authorities. For the most part your posts have been intelligent and humorous but making such allegations is a serious business.

Continuing to wage your anonymous vendetta against your (almost)namesake in this manner could result in me having to take the message board offline (and we don't want that to happen, do we?) as I have no intention of getting into trouble on behalf of someone who refuses to use their real name/e-mail address when posting on this board.

A little banter doesn't do any harm and can provide amusement but I'm not sure you realise the seriousness of your theft allegations. Clean up your act or go away.

I'm desperately looking for some stock style wheels to go on my super shitbox project car. They have to look as normal as possible (to the untrained eye) yet be considerabley wider than standard.

I seem to remember a few street sleepers in Volksworld had Kronprinz wheels which are exactly what i'm looking for!

Anyone out there have a set for sale or know of a UK agent?

I`m in the Gatwick area and would be happy to let the shell go for around £100 ono but clearly I`m open to bartering. It comes with Glass, doors and panals, perfect headliner and dash, bonnet, deck lid, no dents or rust.

Come on get your rusty 1302s,1303,or 1303s a new suit.
