i exchanged a running but worn original engine in favour of a well known "painted gold" brand of 1600 motor when i had my first bug.. worst mistake i ever made.. "new" engine had more problems than the engine it was replacing, cost me over a grand and only lasted 60k i would suggest keeping the original engine no matter what, and finding a suitable replacement on a non-exchange basis.. if this specialist hasnt even split the case before diagnosing or even checked for excessive endfloat (for f*cks sake!!) then do you really want him to install a new motor for you?! i know i would run a mile!! it smells to me of a sales pitch.. i wonder if he gets commission for fitting a certain suppliers motors?

£350 +VAT-That's at least 10 hours labour and they would have to be shit hot to charge £35/hour unless they are main dealer.Ask them how they spent these 10 hours? (NT)John11:08:15 07/12/02 Fri

The plot thickens. I just went down to see the car and found it sitting around the corner with the engine still fitted just where the recovery truck dropped it off!!! I would love to name them to safeguard the future of our air-cooled lovelies but they would probably sue me for slander you just cant win these days. (NT)zerocool11:18:12 07/12/02 Fri
