Subject: Re: Mike - I had an email off Anne Jenkins. She recognised the girl on the left as Melanie Lane. She reckons that the building is in fact the county/grammar school with the large houses at the top of Oak Street (Antwerp Place?) behind it. Looking at it, she is right. John who sent me the pciture is not from Abertillery and mentioned that the band in the picture played the Jazz Club several times. Carolyn told me she remembers the Jazz Club as a green hut in Castle/Vivian Street. So it seems John wasn't certain where this pic was taken. Does nayone know the other girl in the pic? And does anyone out there have any photos/memories of the Jazz Club?

The Jazz Club started life in a hut (that I think was used by the Air Training Corps). This hut was taken over for a clothing factory and hence the move to the Catholic Hall in the late 60s. An incredble agreement from the Church to allow a place for young people to enjoy themselves given the social trends of the 60s. It was a famous venue in the Valleys and beyond and did have a number of regular visitor groups that skirted with Pop fame. The main visitors were groups like Mayall that were in the British blues tradition. In addition it was a good starting ground for local groups like Amen Corner, and the Bystanders from Merthyr (later to become Man) A self help group set it up and these people moved away. Very fond memories of both places, especially painting the modern art on the walls.
