Subject: TASK 14

Task 14
Read the text and say how we can test communicative competence.

More than the ability to form correct sentences, a communicative language test should evaluate the ability to use them appropriately.
Ideally the test can be made for the specific necessities of the group, but as often there are mixed groups this may not be possible so, Listening, Understanding, Speaking and Writing should be tested in meaningful use of the language, in situations created to simulate a real language need, such as information sharing/acquiring. Itīs important to remember that there are often more than one possible outcome to any conversation therefore more than one correct answer may be acceptable in some situations.

An example of it would be:
Ask your students to prepare a travel plan for a week. You may choose the location or let them choose it, but specify that the plan must include hotel reservations, transportation to and from the vacation spot, transportation to the hotel (if applicable), sight-seeing, local tours, leisure activities (all as applicable to the place chosen). This should then be written in a pamphlet form and brought to class a week before the day of the test. The teacher then corrects it at home (half the points can be given this way as a writing task).
Then there are two options:
- The teacher may then choose the best three or four and the respective students will read them in front of the class while the others take notes which will be worth the other half of the points.
- The teacher divide the groups in pair and each student takes turns reading their (corrected) plans to his partner who takes notes as best as he can to earn the rest of the points.
