Dzogchen and Buddhist Meditation

Freiburg, South Germany

[Friday night talk and weekend meditation workshop]

In the Old Schools of Tibet, the Nyingmapa and the Bonpo, Dzogchen is regarded as the highest teaching of the Buddha, pointing directly in our immediate experience to the Nature of Mind. This Nature of Mind, which lies at the core of our being, is in actuality our innate Buddha-nature, our potentiality for liberation and enlightenment. Over this weekend, we shall examine and practice some of the methods of Dzogchen which are at the heart of Buddhist meditation.

Relaxation and Stress Management in Buddhist Meditation

Bochum, Central Germany [Meditation practice]

The principle of the Dzogchen meditation of Tibet is radical relaxation, not only of our body, but of our energy and mind. Only by such deep relaxation in a meditative state, can we reduce psychological stress and mental distractions, sensitizing ourselves to our more profound levels of being and discovering our true potentiality for liberation and enlightenment. The emphasis on this weekend will be on meditation practice.

Bon and Tibetan Shamanism: The Pre-Buddhist Traditions of Tibet

Budapest, Hungary [Lecture series]

Before Indian Buddhism came to Central Tibet in the 8th century CE, Tibet had already developed a rich cultural tradition known as Bon, which had ties with Central Asia and the mysterious land of Zhang-zhung to the west of Tibet. The teachings and practices of Yungdrung Bon, ⌠the eternal tradition,■ stemming from Tonpa Shenrab, are allotted among the four Gateways of Bon: Shamanism, Sutra, Tantra, and Dzogchen. This series of lectures will provide an over-view of Yungdrung Bon, both popular and monastic, focusing on Dzogchen in the Bonpo tradition from Zhang-zhung.

Bardo and Phowa: Tibetan Buddhist Teachings on the After-death Experience and the Transference of Consciousness

Regenburg, South Germany

[Friday night talk and weekend workshop]

Translations of the Tibetan Book of the Dead have made some of the Tibetan Buddhist teachings concerning survival after death familiar to us≈but there is a much vaster untranslated corpus of teachings and practices, found in both the Buddhist and the Bonpo, traditions, relating to dying and after-death experiences. We shall examine some of these practices which prepare us for death and dying, such as Bardo meditations, soul journeying, and the practice of the transference of consciousness.

Dzogchen Meditation according to the Buddhist and Bonpo Traditions of Tibet

Santa Cruz CA, USA [Friday night talk, weekend meditation workshop]

In Tibet there exist two authentic traditions for the transmission of Dzogchen, the Nyingmapa and the Bonpo. Both of these traditions focus on discovering within our immediate experience the Nature of Mind which lies beyond time and conditioning by society and culture. The intrinsic awareness, known as Rigpa, which is the Nature of Mind itself, is ever-present in our daily experience in this life and even after death, like the presence of the sun in the sky beyond the clouds. This weekend workshop with a well-known teacher and translator of Dzogchen texts from the Tibetan will explore some of the methods of meditation employed in Dzogchen for the self-discovery of the Nature of Mind.
