Well now-a-days providing well for your employees is secondary to a lot of other considerations. A bisiness that gave theior employees good salary or wages and good benefits not long ago might have needed to drop the percs and was unable to continue keeping up with the cost of living. when it gets too far off of the scale they either close up shop , relocate to where they can do it at a lower cost ( which used to include moving within the country before that got too expensive ) or get flattened by the competition.
Nothing against good buisiness practices of course and find a lot of the things done are thanks to outside influences that the companies have no control over , but when companies go belly up and people get laid off in such number it is a sure sign that we , as a country , are not doing things the way we should be doing them.
Sure would be nice if all employers could afford to give the wages and benefits that workers should be getting but without some way of doing that without the benefit of being in one of the large employer groups that just isn't usually possible.
As I see it there are a lot of guilty parties out there on all sides of the debate for why things don't work and why we are where we are right now instead of where we should be.
