Canarsie in the mid to late 80's was the time to be there. Stickball in the 115 courtyard, weekend football at Seaview Park, working at the PAC (im sure every must have put some time in). Im 10 years removed from our beloved Canarsie, but every time I'm back to visit, how sad has it become?!?

What is sad about it.....is it that it is now a black/carribean neighborhodd with hardworking Carribeans...Or is it the fact that you cannot chase blacks, and call them niggerts anymore. I too remember the 80's and it was terrible for us few black families>

What a fucking joke. We got out in the early 90's and it was bad. When you get 6 families that dont belong living there, and cram them into a 2 family house, and each pays what they could afford living in east NY, you get East NY. Bars on windows and muggings. Your a joke and Its a shame I can never bring my kids back to Canarsie and say I lived there. Im embarrased of what it has turned into. I dont mind living with black people. But what lives there now are black trash!!

Indeed...most of the blacks who live there now don't even realize how bad it is...they grew up around all that shit! That's what's really sad...they don't realize how low their standards are...

I lived in Canarsie in the 80s and early 90s and this whole attitude is the reason why I couldn't wait to get out. People think that because they are white and have a little bit of money they are better than everyone else. Or maybe they just need someone to look down on because they are uneducated and have an inferiority complex. No one had any class. At least the people there now are more real- they don't have to look down on other people just to make themselves feel better. My parents still live there, and I don't think it's so bad. The neighborhood went through some dark times in the mid-nineties but it has gotten a lot better- and it has nothing to do with race so shut up. The people on their block are really nice- the new ones and the old, black and white, russians, chinese, etc.

Indeed Canarsie WAS a nice neighborhood. I grew up there from 1972 until 1998 and my parents still live there. My parents used to tell me stories how nice the Bronx and Brownsville were when they grew up and I could't picture it. When my children get older it will be the same thing with Canarsie. These black people don't realize that when they move form a ghetto to a white neighborhood it becomes the same shit they left. You let me know if there is one nice, safe black neighborhood, I would love to see it.

Where are you "first Canarsie Blacks". Why haven't you responded back. You wish Canarsie was like it was back in the 70's and 80's. What a disgrace. You see it's your exact mentality that makes us former Canarsians sick. If you think that overpopulated houses, high crime, filth, etc. is better for your living conditions than you'll never understand why we are disgusted. I lived in Canarsie for 28 years and you could count on one hand the times it was on the news or in the newspapers. Now every week it's on the news with some killing or high crime statistic. Yeah....it's definitely a great place to live. You better hope your not the next statistic walking to the store!

You know what, white people? I can't even blame you for the things you say about Canarsie now. I'm a black man that remembers Canarsie back in the 80's. And I have to say that it was a nice neighborhood. Although I was living on the outskirts of East New York in the 80's, I did visit Canarsie a couple of times. I lived with my mother in the 80's and whatever neighborhood we lived in over the years, she saw to it that it was good enough to raise a child in. I remember walking up Ave. L just to go to the movies by myself. Back then there were a lot of white people living in Canarsie...but they didn't bother me. I respected the neighborhood and I felt the respect in return.
By 1999 I started to reside in Canarsie along with my mother and wife. I noticed that a lot of white people left and migrated elsewhere and that a lot of blacks and hispanics moved into the area. I've also noticed that our youth happens to be the most ignorant generation of all times. I'm very surprised and disappointed in my people for not taking more time to raise their kids up the right way.
My mother is from the Caribbean and I was born in Brooklyn. My father ducked his responsibilities as a man and filed for divorce when I was ten. Most people, especially white people, would think that I would grow up to be just another statistic. But my mother wasn't having that. She whipped my ass and put me in check if I ever stepped out of line. And I thank her for that because there is a big problem within the black community. Martin Luthor King and Malcolm X would be disgraced with the state of black youth today. It seems that all those civil-right marches were all for nothing.
Some of us take pride in where we live by keeping our surroundings clean and pleasant at all times. The white people that walk by our house gives my mother compliments on the flowers and plants that she has in the front yard. But...there are some black people that could care less about their Canarsie homes. I've seen these people litter the streets with their trash that just seems to end up in my mother's drive-way every week. These are the people that smoke weed out in the open and let their little kids roam the streets with no adult supervision, and listening to adult-oriented lyrics in today's music.
I can't apologize for the bad apples in the bunch but I do want the white people that still reside or used to reside in Canarsie to realize that all black people are not the same. The good and bad traits in society can be found in all races of people. Thank you for your time. Peace.

I must be missing something here. Really, I must be missing something. It sucks that Grabstein's isn't there anymore, and that there isn't anywhere else to go out to eat except for Chinese and Caribbean food. But other than that, I don't really see much difference between Canarsie now and the Canarsie of my childhood. Except that not everyone is Jewish and Italian, and I would say that's an improvement (and I myself am a Jewish girl who sometimes gets mistaken for an Italian). Canarsie was never that great- I always thought the people were kind of trashy. So they kept things clean and didn't kill each other, when I was a kid I always felt like people were mean and uneducated. I had to go to high school in manhattan so I wouldn't get beat up for doing my homework and wearing glasses. My parents still live in the same house I grew up in, and the block looks as good as it ever did. A house on the block recently sold for like $450K-- that's INSANE. There are all kinds of people living there, and they take care of their shit, and are nicer to each other than I remember from when I was living there. Crime is a problem in every city- if you want to go somewhere with no muggings go move to a quiet little town in the midwest. Of course, as someone from the city people will look at you with suspicion. Maybe then you'll appreciate where you come from.

Where are you "First canarsie Blacks". It's September and you haven't responded back. Come on I want to hear your comments to these posts. Stop hiding behind the computer and admit that Canarsie was much better when it was a predominately white neighborhood. Come on...admit it, everyone else on this site already knows the truth. There is no good black area in America so what would make you think that Canarsie is better now that it's mainly black then when it was mostly white. As I posted in July, you can't even go to the store now without wondering if your going to be some crime statistic. What a hellhole. But like someone just posted...the reality is that most of the new canarsie residents have such a low standard of living that they just think it's the way your supposed to live. we are all still waiting for your response.

I'm out of Canarise for almost 2 years. I lived there for 30 years. It was time to leave. My mom got mugged once going into our building. Walking home from the bus, I didn't feel safe. The block wasn't that well lit. The area sure has changed.

I never saw a neighborhood "change" as fast as Canarsie...Why did everyone sell their houses? If no one sold and stayed maybe you would still have your precious neighborhood...people "panic" and then a neighborhood caves in. All of you flipped your houses like rats deserting a sinking ship.

Don't complain, you all ran like chickens. You are the ones that made your neighborhood "change". You let the real estate companies carve Canarsie up like a turkey. Now you look back and wish for the old days, and blame other people.

Nah dude....you got it all wrong.
All of us in our 20's (at the time) were getting our own apartments & houses, as we moved out of our parents' homes.
We wanted wide open space in NJ, SI, FL or LI.
Nobody ran cause of the black people moving in.
People sell for normal reasons, and no young Bensonhurst guido was gonna move in & take our places.

Canarsie served it's purpose well.

Hopefully, the new residents will also have fond memories of it when they leave in 20 years.

Yes, Yes indeed. Canarsie is a sad sad place now. I was there from the mid 80's to the mid 90's, some of the best years of my life. Then it started turning into a shit hole, after Reverend Al Sharpton decided to march through there after that real estate bombing incident. I was told by my Mom how Canarsie at the time I was there was like East New York when she was younger, a nice Itaian/Jewish neighborhood. I couldn't believe that East New York at one time was like Canarsie, the sad thing now is that Canarsie is like East New York. Anyway the black trash have Canarsie now and theres nothing we can do now, except keep reading how crime just keeps getting badder every year.

By the late 80's Carnarise was already a shithole. I'm form Bayview and lived there from the late 60's until the mid 80's.
Canarsie went to the dogs in the early 80's. I think the Jamaicans and the other Carribean people are bringing it back up. They are taking it back from the Ameriecan blacks that wanted to turn it into an East NY or Brownsville.
The F**ing L train was the worse line in the late 80's. I still live in Brooklyn(a few miles from bayview) and I go to Carnarsie every week. I really think its coming back. It might not be white but its alright.

Yea real good!!! I went to see one of my friends that still lives in Canarsie. I went to the corner store to get a 6 pack of bud. I walk out of the store 2 DT's (Cop cars) pull up and start checking my pockets. I asked what did i do? They said i don't belong here. I told them no I grew up here,I belong here, they don't.
