I must be missing something here. Really, I must be missing something. It sucks that Grabstein's isn't there anymore, and that there isn't anywhere else to go out to eat except for Chinese and Caribbean food. But other than that, I don't really see much difference between Canarsie now and the Canarsie of my childhood. Except that not everyone is Jewish and Italian, and I would say that's an improvement (and I myself am a Jewish girl who sometimes gets mistaken for an Italian). Canarsie was never that great- I always thought the people were kind of trashy. So they kept things clean and didn't kill each other, when I was a kid I always felt like people were mean and uneducated. I had to go to high school in manhattan so I wouldn't get beat up for doing my homework and wearing glasses. My parents still live in the same house I grew up in, and the block looks as good as it ever did. A house on the block recently sold for like $450K-- that's INSANE. There are all kinds of people living there, and they take care of their shit, and are nicer to each other than I remember from when I was living there. Crime is a problem in every city- if you want to go somewhere with no muggings go move to a quiet little town in the midwest. Of course, as someone from the city people will look at you with suspicion. Maybe then you'll appreciate where you come from.
