This entire story is lifted from Snopes.com with the commander's name added.

It's a lie, and it disgraces the name of the real Cdr. McWhorton, who was a double fighter ace in WWII. By the way, not only Snopes debunks it, but another website called the people and asked the wife (the husband was hard of hearing) if it was true, and she said, "No."
