• I just re-red the abduction scene in ABSOAA. What an incredible piece of writing. I've been reading a few chapters each night, but knew that when I got to that scene, I wouldn't be able to put it down. Yup. Lights out at midnight. The layers, the levels, the intimacy of each character;s motivation. And then she keeps throwing in small physical details of the woods surrounding Claire. Can someone point me to the book/chapter in which the "trouble" occured between Grey and Fraser at Helwater? It is repeatedly referenced and I feel I am missing a big piece of the puzzle. I can guess what happened but would like to go read it.

  • I haven't read it yet, but I don't expect it to feel like an Outlander book. I expect it to feel like a Lord John book. I mean, that's what it is, right? (To me the Lord John books have always felt VERY different than the Outlander books. Definitely more of a straightforward mystery -- which is not a genre I'm a fan of. I only read them because I like John, and to be honest, I mostly skim them, especially looking for any Jamie kernels. But I'm certainly not expecting this one to feel like a Jamie book.     • Dr. John Hunter was Denzel and Rachel's UNCLE. And Denzel was sent to London to study under his patronage - that's where he got his medical training. I finished SP last night (after trying NOT to read so quickly), and must say that it was a good read. Once again, DG has intrigued me by bringing in the fact that Jamie knew Minnie from his days in Paris (and no, I do not believe that information was in DIA) and the interweaving of this story with those of the Outlander series was so well done. I also thoroughly enjoyed reading more about Hal, Minnie and John's life with his family in London. A great read! Too bad we now have another long wait for the next one.   • Scottish Prisoner is during the time Jamie was at Helwater, Claire was still is 'our' time. It is almost immediately after John returns from Canada (Custom of the Army). Plague of Zombies is, again, almost immediately after SP. John has been to sent to Jamaica as a military official ro investigate some trouble, he returns to England and gets sent out as govenor (when he meets up with J&C) years later. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe all the LJ books are set during Jamie's time at Helwater or his time at Lallybroch right after (ie when he married Loaghaire).   • That makes sense, the only thing that is puzzling is the Gellie thing. Was she living without her husband on the plantation for that long? When Claire was listening to the gossip about Gellie in Jamica (before knowing it was her) the women suggested that the death of the husband was recent. I will get out Voyager and look again, but if this story is when Jamie was at Helwater, then doesn't this make his death happen much later than suggested in Voyager.   I am about 6 pages into Lord John & the Zombies. All I can say is I feel like I've come home to a much loved placed that I didn't even know I missed until I returned. I have read...how many?...authors, good obscure ones, bad best-selling ones, and everything in between. No one, no one at all, does it like our Diana. the rhythym , the cadence, the wonderful, superlative use of language. If, by the second paragraph, you don't know you are reading Diana then you just don't deserve her. Who else can take five words to describe a character so well that you feel you've know that person all your life, and then spend another hundred words developing, without the least feeling of wordiness? The story is developing as well as you would think it should, I'm not really far enough into it to say if I think it's a good story or not (as if there is any doubt), but the joy of the writing itself is enough for now.

• Just finished 'A Leaf on the Wind of All Hallows' -- BrendaW, 09:19:59 05/09/11 Mon
  I really liked this short story. So sad at the end. No idea that it was actually Roger's dad, who held him when his mother threw him over the rail. Anyways a thought stuck me. In 'ABOSSA' (I think) Roger is remembering someone saying to him when he was a little boy -'who's the good boy' (or something to that effect - I don't have any books here with me at the moment). Roger was saying this to Jemmy and was remembering the words from his childhood. He first thought it was his father but then he tried harder to remember and could not figure out who it was. Well, now we know that it was actually FRANK who said this to him. I was trying to figure out how long Jerry was gone. In the present day, Frank brought the medal after he had been missing for 2 years. Was it shortly after this when Jerry returned? And how long was Jerry in the past - was that 2 years or more also? I wonder what he did in those 2 years?
  Another startling moment - It was actually Roger who met Jerry in the past and got him to the stones ? Wow. Now I wonder where that came from? Is this actually Roger and the guy (forget his name)who are looking for Jemmy at the end of Echo?
  Oh, I am so anxious for the next 'Big' book to come out - I'll probably be more than 2 years yet!

  • Glad you like it Brenda. Frank might have said that to Roger, but he was rememebering his mother saying 'who's a good lad, then'. Roger and Bree were trying to get Jem to use the potty and Roger remembered mis mother saying that to him. I thought Jerry was only in the past a couple of weeks, maybe not even that long - but you're right about the time gap. Maybe time passed differently, Jerry didn't seem to have done much 'back then' if he was gone for 2 years, no adaptation at all. Herself has said Book 8 might be out in late 2012 but we'll have to wait & see, meantime there is Lord John & the Scottish Prisoner coming this Nov (I believe). (NT) -- jayn, 11:36:19 05/09/11 Mon

  I took Exile to my sister on Christmas Eve, she finished it that night and - well...she likes it. I think her dh liked it even better, if you get the drift. Sis is a long-time Outlander fan (I think she read it when it first came out) but she is not so into it as some of us.
  
  Problem is, I left my bookmark and Scarlett's card tucked into the book and I have a feeling I'm not getting what sis calls my inspirational cards back. This could lead to a full-blown family feud.

  after reading the short story in Songs of Love and Death - I must say that I like Frank even LESS! He was the one that visited Jerry's wife, Dolly, to give her the "sad news" and it almost seemed like he would have made a pass at her or something if he could..
  
  Also I pulled out Outlander to see if Frank made any comment to Clare about Roger (as Frank had met Roger before) or if Frank showed any compassion for little Roger - NONE! In fact didn't even recall Roger when Clare was speaking about him - was more interested in his own glorious ancestor - Black Jack! YUCK!

  • I'm not sure Frank would have made any connection to Roger Wakefield, MacKenzie is a fairly common name, Frank wasn't especially interested in young Roger, and Jerry was only one of many soldiers.   • Does anyone recall that Diana posted on her blog there is a kind of big mistake in Exile and wondered if anyone would find it. Well today she reported what that mistake is - Jamie is depicted as being shot in the wrong arm. That's what I said way long ago the very day the book came out. And, depending which picture you look at, his wounded arm changes. I said that also. Just bragging that I found the error. Just bragging, that's all.   I haven't got/read the book, but have been following the thread on Compuserve - there are many more posts/insights than here, including input from DG herself.
  
  How do you think that this story will impact on Book 8 - in the past stories (mainly the LJG stories) they have been set while Claire was 'away', so not particularly relevant to the story at large, but this is a continuation of the cliff-hangers from Book 7 - Roger and Buck going to look for Jem who they think has gone through the stones. And then turning up where they did, and the subsequent events.
  
  So - where ydo you think that leads us to in Book 8?

  • That is such a hard one. The Compuserve threads go too long, so I rarely read anything over there anymore, so I don't know what they're saying-or DG herself. All I can take out of it is that Roger & WB ~do~ go back, but something must happen to WB along the way. As Jerry describes him-sallower and deeper-set lines-and with Echo's declaration that he is dead (to his family at least) when he disappers around this time. So whatever else happens to Roger & WB, WB must not get back to his family. That's all we can surmise now. Oh, and they travel to the south toward the Northumbria area! What I'll be ~very~ interested in seeing, is how DG is going to resolve the basic premise of TT-that you go to whoever you are focused on. I can see WB thinking most fervently of his wife, but Roger? He would have been completely absorbed by thoughts of Jem, so he should not have traveled at all if Jem is still in the 20th century. Does that mean Jem ~did~ go back? We'll see.......     • Something else bothering me, now that I think of it. If Jerry (which must mean Roger & WB) went back to 1752 (hence the author's note about the calendar change), #1-WB was already born then. Is that possible to cross your own timeline? I thought in one of the earlier books, DG said you'd die? And #2-the gold isn't in the Spaniard's cave yet, so even if Jem does go back, he wouldn't know the gold was still at River Run in 1752. Roger was concentrating on finding Jem (Jeremiah MacKenzie) but since Jem was in the present day in the tunnel, when Roger time traveled he was drawn toward the other Jeremiah MacKenzie, his Dad, Jerry.     • My take is that it was b/c he was Scottish, they were "Northumbrian." This would have only been a few years after Culloden, so the Scots were still being persecuted after the Rising. I would imagine anyone not-Scots would have had a low opinion of them, especially a lone young male-probably thought him an outlaw at best, but certainly a theif. There likely would have been a lot of starving ppl coming down out of the Highlands in search of food and livelihoods by this time. The way they pounced on Jerry, it sounded to me like these Northumbrians had a thing for depredating the highlanders as they passed through, stole everything they could from them, if they caught them. But I would guess it was mutual-as bad off as these ppl were, likely the highlanders took their share as well while passing through.   I'm almost as worked up as I was at the end of Echo. I need to know more NOW! What happens next? Great story, loved it. To be honest I found it a teensy bit hard to get into but by the third page I was hooked - I would compare it to a story where there are two separate plot lines and when the 2nd one is introduced you only want to go back to the first. (only of course, the first in this case is Jamie, Claire et al and they're not in Leaf. But that kind of 'hey what happened to my story' feeling. But once I got going - wow!

• I lent my copy of The Exile to a friend at work who I hosed. She told me the other day that she hasn't gotten a chance to read it yet, but her DH devoured it and loved it. Now he wants to read Outlander. He loved the politics of the clan and the battles with the English. Made me laugh, as I thought about how DG says that when people ask her what her books are about, she varies her message, depending on the demographic of the questioner.   A gazillion thanks again to Missa for sending it to me!!! I sat down and read it this morning. I enjoyed it very much, especially seeing more from Murtaugh's perspective. I'm going to have to go back and re-read again soon as well, because I just devoured it this time.
  
  I like the fact that the artwork wasn't able to replace my visuals of the story, but instead it seems to have enhanced them. I think the only thing about the art that I wasn't crazy about was the fact that it seemed inconsistent... people looked different on different pages. That in no way detracted from my enjoyment though.
  
  I was surprised at the Kenneth storyline and at seeing even more of Geillis' treachery. It was also pretty interesting to see that Murtaugh knew much more about Claire than we realized.
  
  Overall, I love the book. I really like that Diana has given us a new way to enjoy the story we so love.

Yeah, I thought Murtagh's reaction to Claire-his suspicions, his wanting to get rid of her, his not understanding what Jamie was thinking keeping her around-was a lot more understandable considering what he saw at the standing stones. Also, you gotta wonder who else he told about that experience; he didn't hold back that he thought she was an Auld One, so perhaps it explains a little about Colum & Dougal's treatment of her, too, not just Jamie as the threat to their rule? • Just got my copy this week (bundled it with the new Dresden Files book so I could get free shipping). I'm still processing. I have to go back and look for the details in all the pictures. Going long: -- MacPudel, 16:47:15 10/30/10 Sat
  Let me put my likes first: this is definitely the most lavish graphic novel I have ever seen. Most are black and white (e.g. Maus, Persepolis). When the "author" is not the illustrator, the GN is usually *much* shorter (e.g. the Serenity, Buffy, or Dresden comics). Because Diana understands the medium, she's art directed this more than usual. When I imagine the books, I usually imagine the main characters in the scene, but the rest is hazy. That's why I enjoy researching (mostly online) settings and costumes. So my favorite parts in the GN are the panoramas and group scenes. For example, when the English gunfire was like bright sparks across the valley. I also thought the scenes in Hall were amazing - I never imagined the dress outfits like that and clearly Diana dictated what they should be. As far as the boobage - which is significant - it certainly piqued DH's interest as he read over my shoulder ("boys of a certain age" indeed!). Perhaps it's supposed to symbolize Claire's sexuality? Walter was actually disappointed not to see some detail of Claire's bum, but decided that the artist was a "breast man". On the negative side, the characters do change a lot from panel to panel, not just over the passage of time (unless you count time in minutes). They are indeed elfin at times. But once you relax and decide that no one can take "your Jamie" from you, it's fine.
  
  As for Kenneth, he is clearly crazy (like Geillis, but in his own way). And he had his own beliefs about how the passage should be accomplished, so perhaps being naked was part of it. Why shouldn't there be other TTs that got through? Otter Tooth was one of a group. Perhaps we will find Raymond in 20th century Scotland. I think we'll see more TT'ing in the next book, with the stage being set by Kenneth and Buck in Echo, and the plot thread of the Frenchman's Gold.

The little there has been, combined with the feelings of presences etc.(like Sun QOTD) is exactly enough 'magic' for me, any more and it will become unbelievable. Right now, I can 'accept' the TT there is, and the sense of someone there. You are welcome to post either positive or negative, as long as the negative isn't nasty and you don't go on and no.   • Kirsten - at compuserve there is a trivia game; that question was asked not too long ago, so I can be fairly sure in answering you. In different places Dougal's colouring is described differently. Sometimes he is dark, with dark hair, sometimes dark with brown, and sometime auburn or russet hair. We sort of pooled the descriptions and decided he is swarthy skinned, with dark auburn hair that seems black at night and red in the sun.   Having quit my job and spent a small fortune (to me) to start up my real estate career has made for a very tight budget. Absolutely nothing but necessities for a while, which includes books for fun. I've been up to the bookstore a few times to browse through it, but I haven't been able to just sit down and read it there because it will just make me want it have it even more.
  
  I'm not begging for a handout by any means, I'm just trying to see if someone who really didn't care for The Exile would be interested in passing it on to someone who is dying to own it. • i got my print of Claire. not really sure what to do with it. any ideas? of course it is gorgeous artwork but wont' ppl ask why i have a picture of a woman i dont' know up and it's bigger than any 'family' pics i even own hahaha? then of course it was $20 postage to send a print. seems extortionate to me although i am guessing they just charged what USPS was charging? anyhoo i think if i put it up i'd have to get another copy of "THE EXILE" and then cut out some pictures and put them up too so it didn't seem so weird lol. i do like the way it was done. anyone with theirs want to share any thoughts? -- oorjanie, 20:08:37 10/20/10 Wed

  Hello to everyone! I'm new here--I read the QOTD regularly, but have never posted before--but I've loved these books and characters for years.
  I really enjoyed The Exile and the different perspective it showed--it was interesting to get insight into Murtagh's thoughts. Jamie and Claire weren't quite as I've pictured them, but I didn't expect them to be able to match up with my imagination exactly and it didn't ruin my enjoyment of the book at all. There was something about The Exile I was curious about and was wondering if any of you ladies might know more about it.
  
  I couldn't help noticing that Claire's gold wedding band from Frank was absent throughout the graphic novel and we also never saw the silver band that Jamie gave to her upon their return to Leoch after their wedding. Although it was never discussed, I always felt that her original wedding band helped refute accusations of being a whore and gave some credibility to her story of being a respectable lady traveling to meet family in France, and with the bigger focus on the ring in the subsequent books it seems to me that its absence is not something Diana would have overlooked when going over Hoang's artwork.
  
  I know that Diana had said that Claire's dress was changed from the floral pattern described in Outlander to the solid blue seen in The Exile due to the difficulty in producing the pattern in multiple art panels and I realize that a wedding band would be a tiny detail to have to reproduce in multiple panels (and I also noticed that in many of the panels where her hands were clearly visible, her left hand was covered or blocked a good majority of the time). Maybe I'm reading too much into it, but her bare hands stood out to me. I'm wondering if the ring was left out intentionally due to the nature of tiny detail it would require or some other artistic restraints similar to the dress, and maybe her hand was blocked in so many of those panels to try and hide the fact that the ring was missing...?
  
  I'm just wondering if leaving the ring out was a conscious decision. Does anyone know if Diana has ever commented on this as she did with the dress?

I'm not sure if I read this or made it up (I do that sometimes) but I have a notion that somewhere I heard it is very hard to draw something like a ring in this type of art because it ends up making the finger look like it was cut off.   In light of the fact that Murtagh saw Claire come through the stones, what do you think went through his mind when Jamie asked him to take her back to Craig na Dun while they were at the Abbey? Did Murtagh tell Jamie he knew then? By this point I think Murtagh had accepted Claire and accepted that, whatever she might be, she is Jamie's life mate and it's for the good. In hindsight, (and Diana didn't know when she wrote Outlander that Murtagh knew, she has said so) Murtagh was awfully casual telling Claire what Jamie wanted, I think he knew full well she wouldn't go...but he knew she could.   • Murtagh knows Claire's value to Jamie at this point. Especially since she proved her mettle at Wentworth, in getting him rescued. He doesn't want her to go, and would stall long enough to keep her there at the Abbey with Jamie, until she can prevail. Murtagh would use all his caginess to delay in carrying out Jamie's wishes, to the point where --hopefully, given Claire's stubborn determination-- he won't have to.   • I think Murtagh knows as well as Claire that if she were to leave Jamie, for whatever reason, that Jamie would die. So whether Claire was a "Fairy woman," or "Auld one," or whatever she is, at this moment in time, she is the only thing keeping Jamie glued to the planet, so Murtagh would not want to carry out Jamie's order. And as he said in another frame, whatever she is, if Jamie wants her, well, he can deal with it.......or cut her throat later. If nothing else, Murtagh is practical and pragmatic, so he's going to do whatever is logical to him and I'm sure he knows that Claire wouldn't go no matter what anyway, so why get excited about it?   • I read it three times the week I bought it, then lent it to a friend (who still has it....grrr). Please don't take this as a negative comment, but, much as I enjoyed "seeing" Outlander come to life, I don't see a lot to discuss. The plot was basically Outlander with a few twists (Kenneth and Murtagh seeing Claire come through the stones) and those twists have already been discussed here. I really have nothing more to add that would be of value or spark discussion. I wish I did. Oh, and I too, have been struggling with how to get a QOTD out of Exile and can't quite figure it out.   • Hi Judie - I just think that there isn't much to discuss except the artwork that takes us into new territory. I think you, fairly, asked that we state negative opinions only once. So a discussion of how this or that was or was not rendered doesn't arise. Plus, this is not an artwork criticism group. If my memory serves, most energetic discussions have revolved around plot twists or character twists and this book introduces very little new in that realm.   If you were Mrs Fitz, and you had a 'guest' like Claire, would you burn her clothing, even if you didn't know what it was?
  
  What did they think of her underwear, which I imagine she had on - to me that would seem far more scandalous to the 18th century ladies than the 'breest band'.
  
  Also, if Claire had a bra on then how come her boobs were hanging out after her dress was ripped? (I wondered that the very first time I read the book)

  • Well, her bra was a strapless. Don't know why she would have needed a strapless with a regular dress on, but the thing Mrs. Fitz threw into the fire was strapless, so.......And if it was like the one I have for the strapless dress I have for more formal occassions, your boobs kind of roll over pretty easily if you engage in ~any~ kind of physical activity. So by the time her dress was torn, I imagine that silly strapless bra thing was most likely wrapped around her waiste by the time they got to the croft! But you're right about her underwear.   • Brassieres in the 1940's were bulletproof. They were heavy cotton and pointed with thick straps and several hooks and eyes to fasten. My mother's had a bulls-eye type stitching on the cups. The stretchy, mixed synthetic look and feel did not exist. When the world went to war, so did women's lingerie.
