  I enjoyed my self, but I wondered if someone would be able to follow what was going on if they hadn't already read Outlander. But maybe that's just because I'm used to wordy books and not graphic novels. All in all, a pretty good time, but I have to say--too much with the boobies already!

  I like The Exile and I was positive I wouldn't. Ingrained training you see, comic books could and would be rolled up and used against you if you were caught reading one in the house I grew up in. Mother was convinced comics stunted the brain.
  
  Question: Page five, naked Jamie with no scars on his back. Is this 'our' glimpse of what Claire imagines his back to look like in O when she's tending his wounds?

  • I think it was a mistake. It's clearly Jamie, however. I just finished my 3rd re-read and have mellowed in my view of the illustrations.   • Hey Mel! Can you imagine what would have happened if you'd been reading hardcover graphic novels like this one back then? Ouch! ;-) As for the Jamie picture, I chalk up the lack of visible scars to the lighting (a bit) and to artistic license (for the most part). I think the image lets us take in the beauty of the whole scene and appreciate the scope of the quandary Jamie faces now that he's decided to remain in Scotland, without his scars being a distraction. Bigger impact later, too, when Claire sees them for the first time.   • My first reaction is that it is a big mistake. But I'm not sure his scars are even mentioned in O until she takes care of his back. So, maybe the GN wants the new reader to see it for the first time at that moment, too. To be silently shocked along with Claire. Haven't read O in awhile...maybe I'm wrong.   • I can't see it as a mistake, not after reading DG's introduction. She's wanted to do this for too long not to have thought out each frame very carefully. • I'm just wanting to mention something that I haven't seen here and I'm not sure everyone realizes. If you know this, then great but if you didn't then it might change your view a tiny bit. -- jayn, 13:59:51 10/01/10 Fri
  When Diana began doing Exile part of the publisher's requirement was that is wasn't just the same story - there had to be something new, a different side story within the Jamie & Claire story. And that is why Diana created the Kenneth story. For me, I would have preferred more of the French girl story, but to do that we'd (or rather, Diana would) have to choose between more time before Claire or after Claire - clearly she choose after.
  
  I know a lot of us are doina bit of a 'WTH' about Kenneth, perhaps knowing why he's there helps?

  • I did know of the side story requirement, but to me the Kenneth story was just plain lame. I would've preferred DG to jump back and forth in time, telling the Druid women's reaction to Claire's disappearance, but this would not strictly fill that requirement. And, keeping it all in the past is easier, narratively, to do. I was confused about all the Murtagh/Kenneth action at the end where Jamie is in the ruined cottage, sleeping, and Claire is making her decision at the stones >>>>> -- Lemora, 14:37:27 10/01/10 Fri
  • The impression that I had was that the book was originally conceived as being different in that it would relate the story from Murtagh's POV. Somewhere recently I either read, or heard, that DG herself was somewhat surprised at Kenneth's appearance in the story once she started writing it. So fun to get the insight into her writing process and to be reminded that she doesn't have the whole story plotted out ahead of time--she can be just as surprised by some of the plot twists as we are.   • That's good, I've done the same 'WTH' about Kenneth myself since day1 with Exile. Especially since I've always liked Dougal so much. I think there could have been more depth to his character added with this expanded interaction with Geillis ~and~ this Kenneth-the whole idea behind the TT/SNP and the manipulation of Dougal and other revolutionary groups in the 18th century that I feel kind of let down that Kenneth was just plopped in there and then killed off before we got any taste or sense of how much more deeply the connection could be. ---> -- Missa, 10:30:40 10/02/10 Sat
