Subject: Claire's Hair

Just finished reading The Exile yesterday. I have a question as to your thoughts about Claire's Hair..especially since there was such turmoil over it when DG put up that first pic a couple of years ago. For most of the novel, it looks fairly straightish..with waves at the end. Claire's hair is such a huge part of her in the novel..just like Jamie's red/auburn hair. I'm really surprised they didn't make it curly. I read that Hoang didn't actually paint these pictures, but used Photoshop. Now, I don't know how that is done, but do you think that curly hair isn't easily done on Photoshop? I mean a head full of sexy curls would have been more "Claire" to me, than the wet-head look she seems to have. Anybody familiar with photoshop painting?

[> I have sort of chalked it up to just the difference of opinion of just ~how~ curly her hair needed to be. Of course there are scenes where her hair is described as "curly wig" and unmangeable, etc, but who can answer just how curly is curly enough? I personally like the artistic interpretation of her hair in the GN, I never pictured her hair as medusa-like or very tightly curled. There are degrees of wavy that are all between wispy and curly but aren't crinkly-curly. I do like her hair in the GN, not too curly but more than a little wavy which wouldn't be curly enough! -- Missa, 13:27:01 09/30/10 Thu

[> i think we all have our 'vision' in our minds of Claire (and others) but if you think, if we all tried to draw/paint her hair i'm sure we would all come up with a different version of it. my hair is 'wavy' i guess and it does all sorts of things and is different day to day, heck even hour to hour sometimes lol. not familiar with the photoshop painting but it is amazing the details -- oorjanie, 18:13:16 09/30/10 Thu

[> I don't necessarily dislike her hair in the GN, actually for most of the photos I do like it. I just thought there would be more panels of curly. I have thick wavy hair that can go straight. However, my sister has curls (not Medusa curls), that when you pull the end is stretches and then bounces back in a curl..just like Claire's. I guess I thought we would see more of that. But then, I thought it must have been much easier and faster to draw this type of hair that he did in photoshop. -- conmama, 02:09:58 10/01/10 Fri

[> [> Well, I'm having hair issues myself lately, so I guess hair draws my attention right now, LOL! I went back and looked at the GN. I really think that drawing curls must be hard in photoshop, because even the curly haired panels of Claire don't seem quite right. I have to keep remembering that these are cariactures.... -- conmama, 05:23:07 10/01/10 Fri

[> I think it has more to do with people's ideas of what "curly" means more than any issue with Photoshop. Looking at the amount of detail in The Exile as well as some of the very intricate illustrations that Hoang has on his site, I've no doubt that he could have added more curls if he and DG had felt that the hair wasn't quite right. And going by her responses on her blog when Claire's "portrait" was first posted, Herself's vision of Claire's hair was definitely different from those of most of the commenters. But people have created some very photo-realistic portraits using Photoshop, so I don't think this is something to chalk up to the application. -- Lady Jay, 07:04:51 10/01/10 Fri
