Did everyone give up on reading this #1 bestselling book? :)

I just haven't had time to sit and finish it, but it's right on my coffee table.

I really must finish it - or at least look at the pictures - Jamie's THAT CUTE! :)

[> I went and loaned mine to my veerrryyy sslllooowww reading neighbour. I am an idiot. On the plus side, I moved a bunch of copies from the back GN section to the main fiction section with the rest of Diana's books at Chapters today. [> [> Well, my original post was in jest. But, if we use your premise and are to conclude that a lack of volume of responses means that all the other responses that aren't being posted are negative - i.e. in the vein of "shoddy artwork" - then I'd rather not have the posts, personally. If the discussion is going to die a natural death, that's fine, too. -- Judie, 08:54:48 10/08/10 Fri

[> [> [> To be truly honest Judie I think the 'natural death' may be happening. We had a flurry of posts when Exile first came out, and I shared pretty much everything I had to say. It's a great book but there really isn't that much about it to generate discussion. I did have one thought, thus the new post above. -- jayn, 13:13:24 10/08/10 Fri

[> [> [> [> [> [> Yeah, I think that maybe discussing a page could work. Just call it page "x" of whichever chapter. Could be fun! But I agree that there's only so much to discuss as far as the storyline, so I'm not surprised that things have slowed. -- Lady Jay, 17:13:46 10/08/10 Fri

[> [> [> I love reading other's comments on the main board - and there are true discussions there. But as conmama said, we know the rules here and apparently a lot ofpeople feel that a "discussion" means that you get to freely state your opinion. I'm one of those, I said how I felt about both the artwork and the storyline right after the book came out. And since it's not truly an open discussion, I'll just see what others are saying on the main board. I understand that this amazing forum is Judi's and that she decides how we behave here. Dissension really isn't encouraged. And honestly, I wonder how the Revolutionaries would have survived in that environment. -- Robin, 05:02:08 10/09/10 Sat

[> [> [> [> Just for the record, the "main board" has the same rules as does this board. I don't find people trashing the artwork to be a discussion. Many people were tired of that sort of commentary, not just me. There are many discussions on Compuserve, of which about 4 or 5 are about The Exile's artwork. Have you gone there to discuss your thoughts? Perhaps you will find them more to your liking. -- Judie, 12:39:42 10/09/10 Sat

[> [> [> [> [> [> I've been on this board for *years*. Since before Fiery Cross, at least. I think before Drums. And the bar for 'negative posts' seemed to me to get lower and lower during all that time. I can't remember how many years ago I quit reading the Books board regularly because I got tired of the same old QOTD and "Is the ghost Jamie?" questions and just read the boards for the new books as they came out, and the spoilers board. Then the spoilers board quit being updated regularly and I posted some excerpts that I'd run across, and got criticized for that too, so I quit doing that. I'm obviously not the only person who feels this way. And you know, as you point out, it's your board, you're entitled to run it the way you want. But there was a discussion on the lack of traffic, and I responded to it, and now you're trying to claim I'm some sort of disgruntled newbie when I've been here more than ten years. -- sharon fisher, 03:16:12 10/11/10 Mon

[> [> [> [> [> [> [> Sharon, I never claimed you were a newbie. You mentioned "a pattern of behavior over a number of months" so I went to every board and searched for posts by you and was reporting the facts. Because you made a sweeping generalization about your treatment here and I am not about to let that stand unanswered. >>>> -- Judie, 10:15:05 10/11/10 Mon

.
.
1. The Excerpt Board is not part of the LOL boards. It is run by Vicki and has nothing to do with me or the LOL boards. How she runs her board is her prerogative so you'll have to take up your complaints about that with her. I have a link to it because so many people were tired of excerpts on the Books Board so it made it easy for people to say "there's an excerpt" and folks could click on the link and go to Vicki's board. There have been many posts on the BB where people just HAVE to post about an excerpt and then they get careless and start to tell people what it's about and then, rightfully so, people get upset!

2. You perceive a "bar for negative posts" and that it supposedly gets lower and lower, but the rules have been the same since day one. Maybe I'm just raising the bar of intolerance for this negativity that seems to surface. I think this type of situation occurs way less frequently than, say, 10 years ago. And lots of times the posts are from people we've never heard of - hiding behind their anonymity. And, no, I don't mean you.

3. You keep asking where someone can go to post whatever you want about The Exile - I keep repeating - go to Compuserve. You've already been told by a Compuserve board monitor that you can do that there as long as you don't attack other members. Diana is right there - tell her how you really feel. It's her book, so how she wants to respond to your comments or complaints about her books is up to her, and as the author of the book it's her place to defend it however she feels appropriate.

4. There will always be new people who don't know about 'the ghost' and all the other story lines. If you have no patience for that then, by all means, do not participate.

5. If you feel you are being "jumped on" and it's a pattern of behavior, especially if it goes back years, maybe there's something in your postings that causes that. And I don't think I'm the only person who ever responded to you.

Judie

[> [> [> [> [> [> [> [> And popping in really late and not that anyone is even going to read this but the only person responsible for "updating" the Excerpt board is DG because if she doesn't post anything, how the hell can I?>>>>>> -- Vicki, 18:05:09 10/15/10 Fri

If you've been around as long as you say you have (and I have run the Excerpt board 11 years next month) then you should know that. As far as people jumping on you for posting, on my board it would be a puppy pile of happiness because excerpts are so few and far in between. On here, I get what you mean because (sorry Judie, but it's true) there are people on here who think if you don't agree with them then you are wrong. And they are way meaner than Judie could conceive of being. That's one of the reasons I rarely visit these boards for more than a quick glance. The other is what you mentioned about repetition. But seriously, if you think it's going to happen then don't post. If you want to slam Exile, feel free on my board cause I'm not going to jump on you. Others might though, lol. But anyone slams DG on my board gets their ass banned. No second chances. And since it's my sandbox, like Judie said, I can.

[> I also prefer more open discussions. I think all views are interesting and make me think a little harder about how I really feel. I like to hear everyone's opinion, whether it agrees with mine or not. I get bored with the discussions where everyone agrees and the responses are almost all the same. I usually just skip these. But there are other places to read more open discussions a least. -- klm, 12:17:15 10/09/10 Sat

[> I read it three times the week I bought it, then lent it to a friend (who still has it....grrr). Please don't take this as a negative comment, but, much as I enjoyed "seeing" Outlander come to life, I don't see a lot to discuss. The plot was basically Outlander with a few twists (Kenneth and Murtagh seeing Claire come through the stones) and those twists have already been discussed here. I really have nothing more to add that would be of value or spark discussion. I wish I did. Oh, and I too, have been struggling with how to get a QOTD out of Exile and can't quite figure it out. -- TerriC, 06:09:10 10/14/10 Thu

[> Hi Judie - I just think that there isn't much to discuss except the artwork that takes us into new territory. I think you, fairly, asked that we state negative opinions only once. So a discussion of how this or that was or was not rendered doesn't arise. Plus, this is not an artwork criticism group. If my memory serves, most energetic discussions have revolved around plot twists or character twists and this book introduces very little new in that realm. That is how I understand the lack of postings on this board. -- swarl, 11:13:00 10/15/10 Fri
