This would have only been a few years after Culloden, so the Scots were still being persecuted after the Rising. I would imagine anyone not-Scots would have had a low opinion of them, especially a lone young male-probably thought him an outlaw at best, but certainly a theif. There likely would have been a lot of starving ppl coming down out of the Highlands in search of food and livelihoods by this time. The way they pounced on Jerry, it sounded to me like these Northumbrians had a thing for depredating the highlanders as they passed through, stole everything they could from them, if they caught them. But I would guess it was mutual-as bad off as these ppl were, likely the highlanders took their share as well while passing through. IRL that's how it with refugees, they steal everything they can from everyone they can just to survive. In reply to:
