If you can see an icon instead of the image when you insert a JPG image, it is because the OLE server to which JPG files are registered to is not fully OLE compliant. But this has nothing to do with VTrain. The same icon will be displayed if you try to insert the file into a Word document, for example.

So OLE registrations are a system-wide setting.

1. FILE TYPE REGISTRATIONS

The file type registration you mention (accessible from the Windows Control Panel) is a "standard" registration. It is related to which program is started when you double-click on a file in Windows Explorer, for example. Unfortunately, the file type registration related to OLE is not easy to customize by hand in Windows. What is worse, certain programs register themselves as OLE servers for a certain file type (e.g. JPG) without asking the user.

You will find some links to programs aimed at allowing you manual customization of OLE registration on
http://www.vtrain.net/ole.htm
Unfortunately, these programs do not work very well.

2. A WORKAROUND FOR IMAGE FILES

However, you can paste JPG images as metafiles on your flashcards with the Edit menu | Paste special command. In this case, the image should become visible.

3. A FUTURE WORKAROUND

We are working on another solution that circumvents Microsoft's OLE technology.

VTrain 5.5 will support hyperlinks. Among many other applications, this feature will allow you to add links to external files on your flashcards which can be activated automatically. In other words, when a card that contains a link to an external image file is displayed, the image file will be opened in a separate window. (This setting will be optional, of course.)

Using this feature instead of OLE, it will be much easier for you to control which program opens each file type, since it will be determined by the "standard" file type registration.

If you are interested in this feature, please register.
