Subject: Soundfile Suggestion & Feature Ideas

Hi,
I’ve been using vtrain for a while now and really like it. I have two questions about soundfiles:
a) Although I have checked ‘Play answers automatically’ the program does it with one cardfile and not with another. Why?
b) Frequently, when recording sounds, the program displays a seemingly arbitrary file (the same again and again) when skipping to the next, i.e. it promts a soundfile (not even of that card) again and again. Why?
I would be grateful if you could let me know if there’s anything I can do about that or whether it’s just a bug of the program.

If any of you are involved with the development of the program, congratulations. I have previously designed a testing program myself when I had no access to internet or other programs and worked a lot with it. Therefore, I have a lot of experience with working with this kind of program and I have to say that you have almost all the features I would like to have. In case you are looking for new ideas, here a few:
1. I use a three tier system to learn, first in sequence, than random, than against time, each progressing to the next when reaching about 80-90%. All this can be done with vtrain. There is one thing that tops it as a fourths stage that increases mastery and reduces waste dramatically. If you speed check your content, there are small differences in hesitation or delay that are sufficient to make a relevant hierarchy out of the time needed to answer. From this observation emerges the following cool feature: Once the content is mastered fairly well offer to check against time. Measure the response time for each answer, put them in order according to speed and then offer to retest the 50% that are slowest. Do that repeatedly, in other words, if you test 200 terms, retest the 100 slowest, than the 50 slowest, than the 25 slowest, than the 12 slowest. I call it Mastery Pyramid Speed Drill but call it anything you like and use it as you please if you like it.
2. Sometimes there is a temptation to try correcting oneself, guessing half a dozen times, until one has got it right. This may be cheating oneself, though, giving the impression that one knows what one doesn’t. Therefore, a great feature is an automatic display of the answer – and record as not known – if one has to be corrected (“Well … words are missing or wrong”) more than x (2 or 3) times.
3. Something that would be great with vtrain would be a template with images of items that one can superimpose the language that one wants to learn on. I.e. picture of clouds, a car, a bus etc. I know the value of imagery but I found it too laborious to make the files, finding photos, pasting etc.

I have more ideas but I have (intentionally) no email address and rarely internet access, so I have to kind of throw this at you without being able to gradually check out what kind of comment or feedback you welcome. You have offered me the license for free because I live here in Cambodia and could not really afford it otherwise, so this is just one small way I hope to make some kind of contribution to show my gratitude, so forgive me if this is not really what you’re looking for.
All the best, Philipp
