One way to do this which is probably applicable to many languages is to have a concept of "fields". So if you were making chinese flashcards you could have fields for the chinese characters, the readings, and the english. Then when you load up the flashcard file you specify which fields to be on the front and which to be on the back. This would also avoid having to make two sets of flashcards when you want to front and back reversed.
