Thank your for your contributions.

Your idea is interesting indeed, and we have considered that possibility in our internal to-do-list. In fact, we have been using database files for this purpose, which we import into VTrain when it comes to learning.

But think about the disadvantages of such a flashcard format:

  • VTrain would become slower: more data would be loaded into the RAM of your computer than are actually being handled.
  • VTrain would become less intuitive to use, since you would have to activate a language pair before you fill a Deck of flashcards into the Cardfile. Additional languages would only be visible from the Compose mode.
  • Certain users would be tempted to use the additional sides on the flashcards for "categorization" purposes, e.g. to include information about parts of speech (adjectives, verbs, etc.). That would, in turn, imply creating a link between sides (e.g. side 3 pertains to side 1, side 4 pertains to side 2). With no cross-referencing support on the part of VTrain, the compatibility between the Decks created by different authors might be compromised.

Anyway, we are considering ways to implement this, but this feature is not likely to appear in the coming version (VTrain 5.0).
