- Greetings from Texas... -- Suzanne Griffin (Griffin James), Wed, Mar 28 2007, 2:08:05
I have only begun to research my family history from the "lore" we were told growing up and I have to say how thrilled I am to see a website of the "village in Wales" that my great grandmother was born in!
Since my ancestors came from Wales over 100 years ago, to the coal mining areas of western Pennsylvania (which seems to look very similar), I have little hope that anyone may know anything of them. I am just wondering if there are any families with the same names left in Cwmtillery?
My greatgrandmother, Emma Beachum, was born there in the late 1800s. Also my great-great grandfather George Griffin came from there, or that area. It is unclear what year.
I hope to visit your town in the near future. Thanks for having the website!
Suzanne Griffin

Being born and bred in Cwmtillery but now living in Nottingham i still return home fairly regularly to visit my mum in west bank , but for the last couple of years it seems Cwmtillerys beauty is being slowly strangled by the number of trees everywhere !!! .. travelling up from Abertillery , trees are everywhere , there seems to be not a strategy by the council and they all seem to be overgrown and totally obliterate views ...

- Family Tree -- Frank Morgan, Thu, Nov 09 2006, 15:27:40
Can anybody help me with my family tree? I need to find out when James and Ann were married and when they died. Also any other information would be appreciated.
James EMMS was born in 1814 in Chedworth in the County of Gloucestershire. James Emms also used the name Harding. This was the result of Union activities and not been able to find work as a miner. Harding was the maiden name of his mother. Research also shows that he was born before the marriage of his mother Jane Harding and William Hemms.
Ann DREDGE was born in 1832 in Frome in the County of Somerset. James EMMS and Ann DREDGE had the following children:
John EMMS was born on 8 Jun 1856 in Blaenavon in the County of Monmouthshire.

Jane EMMS was born in 1863 in Blaenavon in the County of Monmouthshire.
Thomas EMMS was born on 27 Mar 1867 in Blaenavon in the County of Monmouthshire. Thomas EMMS and Martha Hannah CLARK were married on 30 Jun 1894 in Bedwellty in the County of Monmouthshire. Martha Hannah CLARK was born on 27 Jul 1874 in Aberystruth in the County of Monmouthshire.
Mary EMMS was born in 1870 in Blaenavon in the County of Monmouthshire.
Martha EMMS was born in 1870 in Blaenavon in the County of Monmouthshire.
James & Ann (Dredge) EMMS

- Tracing Relatives -- Douglas Greenow, Tue, Oct 05 2004, 21:48:23
Hello everyone,
I am trying to build on my family tree and in particular parts of my family who were largely based in the Abertillery area. I am Douglas Greenow who was born in Abertillery on 12 Dec 44. We lived in Duke Street (No 8?) until 1946 when my family moved to Brighton. My father Windsor, and his brothers and sisters all lived in Abertillery. They were Violet Ivy, who emigrated to Canada; Leonard Boyce who married Dorothy Gilmore, who I understand is still living in the Glynneath area; Lesley Roy who also moved to Brighton and his wife who is still living in Brighton; Olive Myrtle who married Bill Duggan; and Clifford George who I believe worked all of his life in the Six Bells. He moved to Kent to be with his half sister Maureen and her husband Ernie, who looked after him until his death from the miner’s disease. There were also two half brothers Peter and Colin and they married and moved to the Nottingham area (I think).
All these children were the product of my Grandfather Tom Greenow (1972-1940) and his wives Janet Agnes Meredith (Jennet?)(1874-1919) and Louisa Watkins (nee Jones)(1890-1939).
If anybody has any information, anecdotal or otherwise on my aunts, uncles and grandparents this would be greatly appreciated.

New Site -- Les, Sat, Feb 03 2007, 10:12:37
Have now loaded most of the new design to the site, just a few minor things to adjust and then sit down and sort out Cheryl’s news section. If you can think of any additions to this section, I’m sure Cheryl would love to speak with you. The design is hopefully simple to navigate, pleasant and fresh looking and should be faster page loading.
The photo album section, I’m not sure what to do; it has grown into a brilliant 20 albums (thank you all) so I’m looking for suggestion in that department? Perhaps they would be better viewed as a people’s section, a colliery section and so on?
I have added my own personal album, I leave you decide if it worth viewing on a regular basis. I have added to the walks page a Silent Valley Walk, which I walk into Rose Hey Worth, Aberbeeg, Blaina Cwmcelyn and back into Cwmtillery complete with sore feet, hope you enjoy the photos.
I have loads of other additions to add and I will spend as much time as necessary to complete every one of them. So if you have any suggestion please let me know as I hope it will be an exciting year for Cwmtillery.com and I would like you all to have an input.
But above all, enjoy the Cwmtillery.com website, its yours I just look after it for you.

Next month I plan to start upgrading the website, hopefully it will be easier to navigate hopefully easier for you to find items of interest. I am quite happy to spend as much time as required to complete this upgrade and I except it to run into weeks rather than days.
I am hoping you can help me on this upgrade by suggesting the good sections of the site I need to keep, the one’s you feel could go and most important, additional topics you feel my enhance the site.
I have been thinking of adding a second message board, one would be open forum and the other would still require messages to be authorised, what do you think?.
Put your thinking hat’s on and let me know via email or this message.

My Great Grandfather, Tom Greenow was born in Cwmtillery on 21st December 1874 or 1875 (I have been told this by my great-uncle, Tom's son) of parents John Greenow and Elizabeth Edwards.
I can find no record of his birth anywhere around this time, nor does he appear on any census until 1901 when he is living with his brother, George, in Kidderminster.
My great-uncle remembers visiting relatives at the Six Bells Pub when he was very young.
I am posting this message in the slim hope that there maybe someone there also descended from John and Elizabeth Greenow who may be able to help.
Many thanks.

Windfarm -- les (Public meeting held by SCAM), Fri, Sep 08 2006, 9:26:14
SCAM (Save Coity and Mynydd James Mountain)
Excellent and well attended meeting was held on the 6th to discuss any issues people may have regarding the proposed wind farm on the Mynydd James Mountain. Don’t worry if you could not attend because a further meeting will be held at Abertillery Comprehensive School in the near future. The Planning application and photo’s showing the approximate location of the 4 Turbines were available for viewing by those attending.
Many of the concerns raised, were those raised at the last planning application when “Pennant” wanted to erect between 20 and 30 wind turbines each with a height of 100metre.
Noise: the turbines can be noisy, not in terms of outright decibels but a constant drone.
Shadow Flicker: the setting or rising sun on a direct line of sight from you past a turbine can produce shadow flicker.
Property Devaluation: do wind-farms cause property devaluation? Unsurprisingly developers say no, those in wind-farm areas say yes.
Environmental Damage: huge concrete bases are required to support these large structures.
The turbines can kill birds, especially raptors, and bats.
It’s been 25 years since the coal industry ceased and the landscape and wildlife have now returned. We have Red Kites flying in the Cwmtillery valley, but for how long?
I think the main issue to come out of the meeting is: if you are opposed to the planning application and want to make your concerns known, please write to the planning office ASAP.
Planning Enquiries,
Mrs Eirlys Hallett Team Leader Planning Control

- Glasenbury and variants Glassonbury, Glassenbury, Glastonbury etc -- Helen, Thu, Aug 17 2006, 21:43:53
I am researching my family history, Glasenbury and variants (shown as G for short below), and am hoping to find some living relatives still in the area.
William GLASENBURY (my g-g-grandfather) arrived in Brynmawr from Gloucestershire in 1860s and married Sarah EDWARDS (daughter of Lewis EDWARDS, a Weslyan preacher). Their children/grandchildren married and lived in Brynmawr, Nantyglo, Llanelly, Blaina, Cwmtillery and Abertillery. Unfortunately the families they married into all have fairly common names and it has been difficult to trace them. So I am looking for descendants/relatives of, or information on, any of the following:

This migth sound random but i wondered if anyone remembered a lady called Cilla living by the church who used to have a penguin in her back garden. My mum claims that when she used to go on holiday to Cywmtillery, she always went to see the penguin. Her nan, Sylvie davies, apparently took her. It would solve many family disputes if anyone else could remember this!!

- Old wall in Palace Row area -- Ian Sage, Thu, Jun 22 2006, 20:59:47
On a recent very short visit to Cwmtillery, I noticed the old broken down wall which I believe backs onto the church hall plot. It is behind railings and weeds, but has several inscribed plaques (maybe foundation stones) on it. I thought I could read my family name (Sage) on one of them.
Can anyone tell me, please, what that wall was? And for full points, can anyone tell me what those plaques really say? Many thanks and good wishes to all,
Ian

- CHARITY ABSEIL - Saturday 12th May -- Keri, Wed, May 10 2006, 22:37:05
We are originally an Abertillery family and visit your site often to see what's going on in our old family home. We still have family in Cwmtillery/Abertillery. We were wondering if we could ask of you if you would be kind enough to sponsor our younger daughter Laura in an organised Charity Abseil which takes place on Saturday morning 12th May. Laura has chosen to participate in this abseil donating all the proceeds to Cancer - you may either have family or friends who have been touched by this awful illness, and any amount however small will be gratefully appreciated. Laura will be abseiling down a 230 foot building at Canary Wharf in London (rather her than me !!) she has only ever done this once before and that was over a small cliff in Wales with the school !! and we were not there to witness that (thank goodness). I (her mum) will be taking photographs and her dad has promised to film her (with his eyes tightly shut) - I shall, if possible, get any photographs that are not blurred by camera shake into the site for you all to see. Here is a link direct to a safe secure site which you can make donations to via a debit or credit card www.justgiving.com/lauraharrhy - thanking you in antipation, Keri and Dawson Harrhy

What do you think of secure message boards, e.g. those that you can read but if you want to post a message, then you have to go through a one off registration?
Would you be happy if in the near future Cwmtillery.com had a secure message board? Would you use it more, would you use it less? And lastly, what discussion areas would you want???

WHERE ARE YOU? -- CHERYL, Wed, Mar 15 2006, 17:26:38
I have received a phone call from a gentleman who now lives in Cwmbran.
He is eager to find anyone who may have performed (acting, singing or dancing) with the Monmouthshire Children’s Theatre, now known as the Gwent Youth Theatre.
It is soon to be the 50th anniversary of the organisation.
He recalls that some of the girls who would be now in their 60’s belonged to the Bryngwyn School Choir, here in Abertillery..
Please if you were a member then get in touch with me as soon as possible and I will pass on details.

I would be very grateful if anyone could help with finding a lost dog.
A friend of mine told me today her son's dog has been lost ~ he is a Staff and very friendly and is nearly 10 yrs old and is a sort of 'brindle' colour he got out of the garden when the gate blew open and they are worried sick about him, they have contacted the police and also the pound but no luck. He is from the Tillery Road area up by the top end and went missing on Wednesday.
If anyone has any information regarding this dog please could you let us know via this board or send an email please.

Waste ground in Hill crest view, cwmtillery. -- Joanne Tucker (nee Meek), Wed, Feb 22 2006, 12:54:19
Does anyone know what the council is doing about the waste ground in Hill Crest View where the old upsaid down houses was?. These houses was still standing a long time after the people move out, so me and a neighbour went around Hill Cest,Valley View,White Horse court to have these houses taken down,we got over 200 names. I spoke to the housing officer some time after the houses was gone, asking her what the council was gonna do with the ground, she wasnt sure at the time i did mention about having a park here for the children. I was told that they would not put a park up after the trouble they had a few years ago in valley view when they had a park there. Can any one please shed some light on this matter. Thanks

- removal of play area. -- delwyn davies, Wed, Nov 23 2005, 20:50:30
who!why!and when was the play area at gwern berthi road removed.Arriving home from work last friday
(18 NOV.05)i was astonished to discover that the
play area at the front of gwern berthi road had been
removed, no one (localy)had been informed of this decision.I remember the play area being built (mid 1950's) as my father and other local men of gwern berthi rd. helped the council workers lift the
cone shaped ''roundabout''onto the centre pole.(remember
those ).Where were our local councillors whe this
decision was taken by the councill, did they object
or did they go along with the decision to ''kill off another facility in cwmtillery.
p.s. keep an eye on future planning applications,
the vacated area would make an ideal plot for a
large bungalow. ( remember the play area near the bridge end!)
i await your responses ''dylan''
