Chunky
Just a few lines to your enquiry on the fire situation, we have been on ember alert for a couple of days now and rumours are been put about to where fires are located It has always been our intention to stay with the house (inside) until the fire front passes over and then go out and fight the fire We have petrol driven fire pumps and high pressure hoses and we man those to put out any fires on the rear of the house, the front verandas are covered by solid piped spray system which virtually saturates all the decking and surrounding house front and we always felt that we could cope well enough but this years fires have been something horribly different. It has been so dry in the forest that when the trees ignite they go up in a huge eucalypt fireball of gas which travels at amazing speed and can be up to a hundred feet high and there has been a number of deaths where people have tried to outrun them in their cars but have been overtaken by the fire
The fire chief has told us that we will be on our own as he will not risk his fire crew and tankers into Big Pats Creek owing to the heavy infestation of trees along the narrow entrance lane. I wanted my wife to go out today and take the dogs and I would stay behind for fire duty but she will not have a bar of it and says we always done things together in the past and it will not change now and that she wants to stay with me at the house
We mutually agreed that due to the extreme ferocity of these fires we would take our most cherished belongings (the better bottles of wine) and leave at what we consider the opportune time
We have already taken the Caravan stacked to the roof with our belongings and put in storage near the city well out of the way of the fires so we have somewhere to live if the house burns down and when we come to rebuild
Well that’s about all I can tell you at the moment but don’t be concerned for us we are survivors and we’ll be O/K
Mike, and family
