- Greetings from Texas... -- Suzanne Griffin (Griffin James), Wed, Mar 28 2007, 2:08:05
I have only begun to research my family history from the "lore" we were told growing up and I have to say how thrilled I am to see a website of the "village in Wales" that my great grandmother was born in!
Since my ancestors came from Wales over 100 years ago, to the coal mining areas of western Pennsylvania (which seems to look very similar), I have little hope that anyone may know anything of them. I am just wondering if there are any families with the same names left in Cwmtillery?
My greatgrandmother, Emma Beachum, was born there in the late 1800s. Also my great-great grandfather George Griffin came from there, or that area. It is unclear what year.
I hope to visit your town in the near future. Thanks for having the website!
Suzanne Griffin

Being born and bred in Cwmtillery but now living in Nottingham i still return home fairly regularly to visit my mum in west bank , but for the last couple of years it seems Cwmtillerys beauty is being slowly strangled by the number of trees everywhere !!! .. travelling up from Abertillery , trees are everywhere , there seems to be not a strategy by the council and they all seem to be overgrown and totally obliterate views ...

- Tracing Relatives -- Douglas Greenow, Tue, Oct 05 2004, 21:48:23
Hello everyone,
I am trying to build on my family tree and in particular parts of my family who were largely based in the Abertillery area. I am Douglas Greenow who was born in Abertillery on 12 Dec 44. We lived in Duke Street (No 8?) until 1946 when my family moved to Brighton. My father Windsor, and his brothers and sisters all lived in Abertillery. They were Violet Ivy, who emigrated to Canada; Leonard Boyce who married Dorothy Gilmore, who I understand is still living in the Glynneath area; Lesley Roy who also moved to Brighton and his wife who is still living in Brighton; Olive Myrtle who married Bill Duggan; and Clifford George who I believe worked all of his life in the Six Bells. He moved to Kent to be with his half sister Maureen and her husband Ernie, who looked after him until his death from the miner’s disease. There were also two half brothers Peter and Colin and they married and moved to the Nottingham area (I think).
All these children were the product of my Grandfather Tom Greenow (1972-1940) and his wives Janet Agnes Meredith (Jennet?)(1874-1919) and Louisa Watkins (nee Jones)(1890-1939).
If anybody has any information, anecdotal or otherwise on my aunts, uncles and grandparents this would be greatly appreciated.

My Great Grandfather, Tom Greenow was born in Cwmtillery on 21st December 1874 or 1875 (I have been told this by my great-uncle, Tom's son) of parents John Greenow and Elizabeth Edwards.
I can find no record of his birth anywhere around this time, nor does he appear on any census until 1901 when he is living with his brother, George, in Kidderminster.
My great-uncle remembers visiting relatives at the Six Bells Pub when he was very young.
I am posting this message in the slim hope that there maybe someone there also descended from John and Elizabeth Greenow who may be able to help.
Many thanks.

- Glasenbury and variants Glassonbury, Glassenbury, Glastonbury etc -- Helen, Thu, Aug 17 2006, 21:43:53
I am researching my family history, Glasenbury and variants (shown as G for short below), and am hoping to find some living relatives still in the area.
William GLASENBURY (my g-g-grandfather) arrived in Brynmawr from Gloucestershire in 1860s and married Sarah EDWARDS (daughter of Lewis EDWARDS, a Weslyan preacher). Their children/grandchildren married and lived in Brynmawr, Nantyglo, Llanelly, Blaina, Cwmtillery and Abertillery. Unfortunately the families they married into all have fairly common names and it has been difficult to trace them. So I am looking for descendants/relatives of, or information on, any of the following:
Albert L ELLIOTT married in 1922 to Mary Gertrude G
William THOMAS married in 1920 to Sarah Muriel G
Edward N WILLIAMS married in 1923 to Eva Elsie G (in Medway)
David JONES (from Brynmawr, son of Edward, both coal miners) married in 1892 to Rebecca Jane G
John Henry EVANS (a brickman from Blaina) married in 1891 to Susan(nah) G
Eunice MEATS married in 1929 to William John G
Harry GLASSENBURY (b 2 Aug 1913)
Emily GLASENBURY (b 1890)
Many thanks.

- CHARITY ABSEIL - Saturday 12th May -- Keri, Wed, May 10 2006, 22:37:05
We are originally an Abertillery family and visit your site often to see what's going on in our old family home. We still have family in Cwmtillery/Abertillery. We were wondering if we could ask of you if you would be kind enough to sponsor our younger daughter Laura in an organised Charity Abseil which takes place on Saturday morning 12th May. Laura has chosen to participate in this abseil donating all the proceeds to Cancer - you may either have family or friends who have been touched by this awful illness, and any amount however small will be gratefully appreciated. Laura will be abseiling down a 230 foot building at Canary Wharf in London (rather her than me !!) she has only ever done this once before and that was over a small cliff in Wales with the school !! and we were not there to witness that (thank goodness). I (her mum) will be taking photographs and her dad has promised to film her (with his eyes tightly shut) - I shall, if possible, get any photographs that are not blurred by camera shake into the site for you all to see. Here is a link direct to a safe secure site which you can make donations to via a debit or credit card www.justgiving.com/lauraharrhy - thanking you in antipation, Keri and Dawson Harrhy

We especially want old photos of buses in Abertillery. You can send them by email to me or if you have no scanner, its no problem, we can collect collections, scan them, make you a CD so you can view them on your computer and also add tghem to our gallery archives.

Waste ground in Hill crest view, cwmtillery. -- Joanne Tucker (nee Meek), Wed, Feb 22 2006, 12:54:19
Does anyone know what the council is doing about the waste ground in Hill Crest View where the old upsaid down houses was?. These houses was still standing a long time after the people move out, so me and a neighbour went around Hill Cest,Valley View,White Horse court to have these houses taken down,we got over 200 names. I spoke to the housing officer some time after the houses was gone, asking her what the council was gonna do with the ground, she wasnt sure at the time i did mention about having a park here for the children. I was told that they would not put a park up after the trouble they had a few years ago in valley view when they had a park there. Can any one please shed some light on this matter. Thanks

who!why!and when was the play area at gwern berthi road removed.Arriving home from work last friday
(18 NOV.05)i was astonished to discover that the
play area at the front of gwern berthi road had been
removed, no one (localy)had been informed of this decision.I remember the play area being built (mid 1950's) as my father and other local men of gwern berthi rd. helped the council workers lift the
cone shaped ''roundabout''onto the centre pole.(remember
those ).Where were our local councillors whe this
decision was taken by the councill, did they object
or did they go along with the decision to ''kill off another facility in cwmtillery.
p.s. keep an eye on future planning applications,
the vacated area would make an ideal plot for a
large bungalow. ( remember the play area near the bridge end!)
i await your responses ''dylan''
