WIND FARM PLANNING APPLICATION -- Glenda, Tue, Dec 21 2004, 19:01:31
Just in case anyone fails to read the Gwent Gazette this week, Pennant have resubmitted the planning application for the proposed wind farm above Cwmtillery/Blaina. The notice for the application is dated 14 Dec and people have 21 days to object - how convenient that the local authority closes for the Christmas/New Year hols this week and doesn't reopen until 4 Jan - the date by which objections must be registered!

- The Blaentillery Farm is located on the eastern side of the valley, over looking the Dingle and Nuns wood. It is the largest working farm in the valley and is a high class Boarding Kennels (see Business section). It was only a few year ago when it received its electricity power from the national grid, prior to that it was supplied via a Generator. The remains of the original Blaentillery Farm can still be found further north into the valley along side the river. (NT) -- les, Thu, Jul 01 2004, 9:38:59

Re, Blaentillery School. -- Trevor Gardner, Sat, Sep 06 2003, 13:52:05
I cant remember the year but I remember clearly watching as Blaentillery School burned. We stood at the back of Winifred Terrace and watched as the flames came through the roof and shot high into the air. I went to Cock and Chick then on to Gelli Grug When "Jasper Downs" was Head master. His brother was the Kid Catcher and between him and Parsons the Bobby we kids didnt get away with much. I remember Bobby Parsons used to flick our legs with the end of his cape, just in case we had done something.Which we usually had. And the Kid Catcher dragged me back to school more than once, he would appear from nowhere and grab you.
I also remember the open day at Cwmtillery Pit Head Baths when everyone looked the place over, one of my Aunts turned on a shower tap and got wet. the bloke in charge was (John the Baths)and he had a rigid set of rules that we all obeyed.if you broke a rule he would ban you for a week from using the Baths.

I was reading the message regarding the christmas lights, on one of the messages and was wondering what others think regarding all these lights on in the house and the safety factor, I know of one or two houses that leave them on all night as on going out early in the mornings they are still on, I know if I had all those lights on there is no way I would leave them on all night, and some of these people have little children and have these lights on in their bedroom windows, I really think it is a dangerous practice, what does anyone else think? also some of them are really cheap and you never know if they become faulty.

Whilst I by no means wish to stop people enjoying the fireworks at this time of year I felt compelled to write concerning my views after Thursdays organised event around the lakes.
The event itself was fine - it was the traffic management surrounding it that got my goat. You could hardly move around the slip road near westbank and access was so tight if emergancy services were needed, i.e. due to a fire breaking out, i'm convinced it would have been difficult for vehicles to get through the mess.
It was a clear but cold night - has everyone become so reliable on cars that they have to bring them everywhere. I reiterate I don't wish to stop people enjoying themselves but a little consideration for residents who don't wish to participate in the event would not go amiss (personally i had work).
There were enough police in the area - but them seemed to do little as usual and just wanted a nice easy night once more. Cwmtillery's own little piece of traffic chaos.

News of the World 22nd August 2004
Ministers are to scrap plans to build hundreds of giant wind farms across the country.
The move follows a huge pubic backlash – led by Prince Charles who called them an “horrendous blot on the landscape.
Instead they are looking to wave technology – harnessing the power of the sea – to produce electricity at half the cost of wind.
Hope the Council are reading this?

When is the time for wimberries? I realise this may seem an odd question, but it has been 30+ years since I last had one of my nan's freshly cooked wimberry pies and I often long for the chance to taste it again. Well, what an unfortunate number of sarcastic people frequent these two sites.
Firstly to Shiney Shilling, speaking of getting one's head stuck in a book - please take your own advice and check out the spelling of "shiny".
Secondly, with reference to the people belittling the revision spell:
Ask a Welsh girl who - oh my! goes against the grain of so many people's depressing outlooks on Wales - who has eleven GCSEs, four A levels, is studying at one of the country's top three universities, who speaks four languages and plays three musical instruments. Yes, ask me, who has taken dozens upon dozens of exams. And I'll tell you this, when exam day arrives, after all the revision and practise is done, what do I have on my desk or in my pocket? Some little token, some mascot, scrap of paper with "good luck" scribbled on it, anything to give me the frame of mind to do my best.
And if someone wishes to offer a confidence boost to exam candidates - something for them to tighten their fist around, something to remind them they've studied all they can and now they WILL do well, then who are any of us to mock that?
And if it is a load of old rubbish, then saying so on a friendly, community website does nothing but make ourselves look small and pessimistic. Just the attitude that fails so many examinations.

- An End to Car Parking in alma Street -- John, Mon, May 17 2004, 18:01:03
The police have just been carrying out a leaflet drop through our letterboxes, informing all residents that as of May 17th, the police will not be tolerating any parking on the double yellow lines at the top end of Alma Street. Regular patrols will be carried out day and night, and the standard fixed penalty fine will be placed on anyh car found parked on that stretch. Anyone who knows the area is all too well aware that there is simply nowhere else to park their car safely. yes, there is an area of ground behind the Mount Pleasant, but it is far from safe. The residents approached the council some time ago in an attempt to remove one set of double yellow lines so that cars could be parked along one side of the road...All to no avail. I know for a fact that there is not one car owner who is willing to park their car on the ground behind the Mount, as the risk of damage to and even torching of cars there is extremely high. The residents have had to tolerate young inconsiderate drivers regularly speeding along alma Street, yet the police and council don't appear to be interested in that in the slightest. The leaflet does state however that any comments can be made to the council with regards this matter, and I'm sure there will be a goodly number doing just that.

Abertillery would see a £4m `sweetener' shared among communities affected by
the scheme.
The proposed Pendragon Windfarm would power 25,000 homes in Blaenau Gwent -
and the £4m `green dividend' would boost community schemes.
Windfarm operators Pennant Wind Energy Ventures plan to give communities
between £150,000 and £200,000 a year for 20 years from electricity sales.
Pennant says that the site on Mynydd James, Cefn Coch, and Coity mountains
is ideal for energy production and can easily accommodate the proposed 20 to
30 turbines of just under 100 metres in height.
Pennant Wind's managing director, Dale Hart, said: "We are a Welsh-based
company and we propose to share the benefits of this project with local
people."
He added the £4 million could rise to £8 million if projects qualified for
match funding from elsewhere.
The money could go towards schemes such as:
* New nature reserves and bird-watching facilities.
* A green energy education centre for local schools.
* Improved footpaths, walkways and cycle routes.
* New works of public art.
* A weather station.
Pennant will now distribute leaflets to all households in Brynmawr, Blaina,
Nantyglo, Cwmtillery, Abertillery, Six Bells and Llanhilleth, asking people
for their views on how the green dividend may best be used. Pennant admits
some of the turbines would be visible. And some residents' groups fear the
giant turbines will be an eyesore and spoil the famous Cordell Country
Trail.

Pennant Wind Energy Ventures has delivered more than 15,000 leaflets to the communities around the area that surrounds the proposed wind farm site, say the “Campaign” & “Gazette”, this would includes Cwmtillery. Has anyone in Cwmtillery received one of these leaflets, because I have talked to quite a few people and no one seems to have received one? Has anyone received this leaflet yet, let us know. Good website which contains further info on windfarm tubines http://www.sw-ag.org/ (NT) -- les, Wed, Sep 10 2003, 12:53:04
Looking at the photo in the Campaign we could also end up with a large network of permanent maintenance roads between each wind turbine not to mention the roads required for the construction vehicles. Frighten I say. (NT) -- les, Wed, Sep 10 2003, 12:56:46

It's already started, An anemometer on a pole hass been sunk into the top of the mountain and is about 80 to 90 feet high. The pole itself does not take up much space, but the four anchor stations, which are used to secure the pole, takes up an area nearly the size of a football pitch. Speak now before its to late (NT) -- John, Wed, Oct 08 2003, 21:21:32

Dixon family, Cwmtillery -- Alison Roberts, Tue, Apr 27 2004, 18:39:46
I have recently been trying to trace the Dixon side of my family from Cwmtillery, without much success as I am new to this hobby. I have, however, made huge steps in finding many branches of the tree. This is mainly thanks to Cheryl and Carolyn Ellis who have been more than helpful. I would like to thank them and everyone responsible for the upkeep of this site. It has been essential in my quest and I am very grateful for the advice and time they have spent in chatting to me. A wonderfull site. Thank you all.

The British Wind Energy Association website is the place to look if you would like to see the size of the equipment and vehicles used in the construction of a windfarm. These two web addresses show photos of the cranes used in the erection and a 56 ton lorry carring two blades of a turbine.

- Your site and Hale Photo's -- Daphne Hughes, Fri, Mar 26 2004, 21:25:04
Hello,
I just wanted to say what a lovely site you have. I was recommended it by Gill Whitty so I could view the Hale family photo's but have enjoyed browsing the whole site.
I am related to the HALE family who's ancestors were from Somerset where the name was originally HEAL. My branch of the family kept the spelling HEAL and migrated to the County Durham Coal Fields.

- Dixon family -- Mrs A.Roberts, Sun, Feb 08 2004, 15:33:14
I have just started tracing my family tree. Does anyone know of the Dixon family from Cwmtillery. My grandfather was Sidney Dixon and would be around 99 years old if he was alive today. Thanks for any help.

- The Arcade - Many Thanks -- Kevin Halligan, Tue, Mar 16 2004, 12:25:59
I would just like to take this opportunity to thank the shoppers of Abertilley for their patience during our renovation work on the Arcade. I would also like to thank the traders in the Arcade (particularly Cheryl from 'This & That')for their help, assistance, kind words and refreshments. The job has over-run considerably but is almost finished. We are now just waiting for the installation of a disabled lift which will allow wheelchair access to the 1st and 2nd floor offices. The ground floor shops and 1st floor offices are fully let, just leaving 80 square metres on the 2nd floor.
Once again, many thanks.
