- Family Ties -- David Hale, Sat, Feb 07 2004, 16:31:11
I wonder if there is anyone who can help me? Does anyone know who provided the photos and/or text for Album One on the Cwmtillery website? Was it anyone related to the Hale family? I was born in Cwmtillery and my grandfather is in the photos with my Aunt Olive and Aunt Evelyn. Also my grandmother Hannah Mercy Hale nee Shearn. Grandfather was Sunday School Supt of Red Brick Chapel. Any information would be welcomed - anybody connected with this family or has stories or knowledge of the Hales. They ran a Grocers Shop at Providence Villa in Tillery Road. I am particularly interested to trace any descendents of Isaac, Harold and also Charles and/or Jack. Please Please can anyone help????

- Ancestors from 'East Side Cwmtillery" -- Lynne, Tue, Sep 03 2002, 5:40:28
I have a record from a parish register of St Peters in Blaenavon, Monmouthshire, that says Trevor GAUT died Sept 12 1911 aged 21 years and that he was born, or from East Side Cwmtillery.
Can anyone shed any light on this fellow? The name could be recorded as GANT GAWT GOUTE GOUGHT etc.
Also, what county is Cwmtillery in? I've been trying to find this place in the 1901 online census and it requires a county to perform the search. I've tried Gwent, Blaenau and Blaenau Gwent to no avail.

My great, great grandfather, Fred Fielding, built Winnifred and Fielding Terraces, also Oswald House (now the Paradise Club) and subsequently ran the shop in Fielding Terrace. I visited the site of Fielding Terrace today, with my family, and spoke to some of the residents of Winnifred Terrace. Does anyone have any old photographs of these buildings, particularly Fielding Terrace. My mum, Fred's grand-daughter, and I would love to see what these streets looked like.

Monkey Parade
Can anyone remember the "Monkey Parade" in Abertillery town? I'm talking mid 40s early 50s now
As a Cwmtillery girl, most Sunday evenings we used to get together, that is the Cwmtillery gang of girls and head for town. Only Sunday best clothes were allowed on this night out. There, we would walk from Church Street at the one end of town to the other end of Somerset Street and back again, we did this all night. Laughing and admiring all the young men, also around town in gangs.
Sometimes, a new face would appear and the chatter of, where is he from, and wonder what's his name, would echo in the gang all night.
I know Brynmawr also had a Monkey parade, and I suppose most towns did
Not sure how it came by the name, but this was the Monkey Parade

I have been searching for the place and date of birth for almost a year, and cannot find any trace of him before 1920 at the above address. I believe that Edward had a sister Mary, who might have two surviving sons. They used to live at Pen Y Bont and were named Charlie and Billy Powell. I am hoping that someone looking at this site might be able to put me in touch with them.

Abertillery Town boys choir -- Terry Cobner, Sun, Aug 03 2003, 8:36:16
On a recent visit to the museum, in what was once the `Market Hall` , I enquired if there was any information as to the whereabouts of the `Shield` won by Abertillery Town Boys Choir in 1958 and at that time kept at the British School.
The `Shield`, which was approximately 3ft in diameter, was won by the choir at what I believe was the `Bristol Co-operative choral competition` for 3 consecutive years.
No one seemed to know where it has gone.
If anyone has any information as to where this shield has gone I would appreciate an e.mail

- Jones' buses -- Stephen Morgan, Fri, Feb 07 2003, 19:13:13
Earlier in the week there was a article in the Argus about a Jones' bus down in Eastbourne. Intrigued by this I have been looking for some web sites on the buses and was lead here.
My family are an old Warmturn family, my grandmother belongs to the Bobbetts, and I spent a lot of my early years there playing on the tip amongst the old coal drams.
Back in the 1950s my grandfather, Jack Pritchard, used to clean for Jones' buses. He only had one arm, and, so the story goes, one night he fell down into the pit under the bus and couldn't climb out. He was found the following morning suffering from exposure.
I have a photograph of myself standing in front of one of Jones' "New" coaches around 1959, it was taken on a day trip but I can't remember where.
I'd like to see some more photos, and I'd like some info on The Jones Preservation Society.

Dr Stanley Mitchell- Cwmtillery Pit Doctor 1949-1953 HELP!!! -- Mike Bull, Tue, Apr 15 2003, 18:54:46
Further to my earlier information request about the same person, I now have more details of his life that might aid the right person in recognising him, and thus revealing more info for us;
Dr Stanley Cyril Mitchell, of Irish birth, would have been in his mid/late sixties at the time he lived in Cwmtillery, approx 1949-1953, at 28, Gwern Berthi Road, with his partner Sara 'Sally' Mitchell and three young children. Stanley was apparently employed as a doctor for the pit, I suppose by the Miner's Union or whatver it was in those days?
Can anyone remember ANYTHING about this man, his life there, work, who exactly he would have been employed by, where those records might be, ANYTHING that might help us at all to find out more about him? What was the local paper at the time? Can that be searched? Really, ANYTHING! I can't stress how important it is to us to learn even the tiniest shreds of new info.
Feel free to email, and thanks so much!

He was the partner- non married, we believe-of our main search subject, one Sarah Cuncliffe/Mitchell. (Known as 'Sally' apparently) She was a fair bit younger than him, and is quite possibly from the Lancashire area and would have thus had an accent to match-can anyone remember these people from that time please?
We know he was a locum in Abercynon after leaving Cwmtillery and that he died around 1962/64. Sarah/Sally was last known of at an address in Cardiff-13 Ferry Road-in 1964.
Anyone, anything?!

Lewis also had a sister Clara who married Wm Hopkins. Excellent website
Have stumbled across it while looking in BBC Website search for Countryfile!! Recognised Cwmtillery as my Grandmothers birthplace. She was one of three children born to a John Thomas Williams who was at one time Assist Manager in 1891 and it appears became manager by her brothers birth date of 1898. I noticed the list of managers listed a T J Willaims and not J T Williams. Is this one and the same I am sure it must be. I have the original handwritten birth certificates.
Can anyone confirm the link or agree with the record, they lived in Cwmtillery house. J T Williams married a Bessie Parminter in 1888 in Bridgwater, Somerset. His father on his Marriage certificate is William Williams at Blaina, Monmouth and he was a Mill Manager. My Grandmothers father must have moved back to Wales where he became the Assist Manager at Cwmtillery. I have often wondered about and been proud of my Welsh blood, I am also 1/4 Scots but I am afraid the rest of me is English!
Will get to Cwmtillery one day. I live in Dorset where my father settled after WWII and early retirement from the Tank Regiment at Bovington.
Best wishes to all in Cwmtillery

The Friends of St. Paul's Churchyard -- Les, Thu, Apr 25 2002, 21:15:06
The Friends of St. Paul's Churchyard
What is it?? Well, it’s a project at St Paul’s Church, which started November 2001. Cwmtillery is in the unfortunate position of receiving little or No funding for the maintain of the church grounds. To overcome this volunteers are spending hours of there own time, rebuild steps, paths, erecting fences, removing over grown brambles and trees. The list is endless, and already improvement can be seen, but an abundance of labour and financial help is still required. I have loaded a page covering this in more detail, the links of which I have placed on the front page and on the St.Paul’s page. I have also included a few images showing progress and area’s targeted, I plan also to update the images as and when new developments arise.
I hope you will take the time to read and hopefully support this project. If you need any other information please drop me a line.

I'm trying to get some information about Cwmtillery Reservoir for a school summer project. Stuff like date of construction, depth and volume. Any information would be gratefully received. Thank you for any answers, I think the reservoir is one of the most beautiful parts of our country.
