I have read that there is an increase in dust storms from the sahara. This has come about in the last 50 years. This has serious implications for the entire planet. It will cause the ice caps to melt quicker. It will cause the coral reefs to die of. It will cause more hurricanes etc. All this is down to a phenomonem called toyotarisation. More people are using toyota land crusers in the sahara instead of the more traditional camel. This is causing the slightly hardened crust on the desert to break up making it more prone to being blown into the atmosphere. This hardening happens over thousands of years.
