I agree, obviously, that we need to keep our perspective, but we must also make sure we don't use inevitable natural occurrences as an excuse for carelessness or defeatism. Those who believe the world is designed might suggest that the world is designed for those volcanoes, but not for the volcanoes and the SUV's together. Whether or not you believe in design, you could argue that since we cannot control the volcanoes it adds more, not less, obligation to control ourselves.
I still have my doubts about toyotarization, though. I want to see more than one scientist write it up.
