Fool for Love: Lots of Spike backstory and more movement on the Joyce and Riley plotlines.

Riley: Danger signs. Attacking the vamps' nest by himself not the sanest thing to do.

Buffy: Gets a huge scare near the beginning of the episode. First time in a while she's been in serious danger on a routine patrol.

Nice Buffy-Giles scene as they try to research the deaths of previous Slayers...

"Well, I suppose if they're anything like me, they just find the whole subject too-"
"Unseemly? Damn. Love ya but you Watchers are such prigs sometimes."
"Painful... I was going to say."

Fun scene with Riley and the others. Nice little demonstration of clashing approaches.

But mostly this is about Spike--both as human and vampire.

(Incidentally, I think Buffy is hearing Spike's edited version, but we're seeing the actual events.)

Common thread of romanticism. Spike, as much as William, keeps centering his world around a woman. But his tough vampire persona is largely a reaction against his actual human self.

(We also learn the REAL origin of the nickname "William the Bloody".)

Informative little scene between 1880 Spike and Angelus. Spike likes the brawl. Gets bored with too many "easy" kills. Angelus is about "artistry"--inventive cruelty.

And we see the beginning of Spike's obsession with Slayers. First as challenges. And with Buffy, the obsession gets turned into a different course.

(And, of course, Spike WILL be there when Buffy is ready to let go of life. Except by that time it won't be a "good day" for him...)

And we close on Spike instinctively trying to comfort an emotionally overwhelmed Buffy...

Darla: Somewhat of a second part to "Fool for Love". Many of the events also appear in FFL, but from a different viewpoint.

Angel/Darla backstory intertwined with present events.

We learn that Angel tried to become a "normal" vampire again after he was ensouled.

(Paralleling Darla's desire to become revamped.)

And in the present we see both Lindsey and Angel dealing with their own obsessions with Darla.

80% of a perfect episode.

I don't think some of the comic elements really worked here. They seemed labored and forced.

"SPOIKE!" She said, "Spoike!" I swear she said, "Spoike!"

Spike's slow-mo power walk through bedlam is one of the high points of the series. Spike is once again a bad ass and scary as a result. Why did they take that away?

The final confrontation with 70's Slayer (Nikki, right?) was brilliantly filmed and integrated with Buffy's lesson. An almost shocking scene and the realization that Spike is absolutely correct (if a bit full of himself). The Slayers died because Spike got lucky. Period. I often tell people that I would rather be lucky than good. Spike says the same thing, but in a different way.

Finally, Spike's 20 seconds alone, in front of the camera: he begins to pick up the money, realizes what he has become, remembers what he was and for the briefest of moments becomes that Force again. Beautifully acted, filmed and directed.

Next, Spoike returns to being a clown...
