Into the Woods: Riley leaves just as Joyce seems to be getting better.

Riley: What's been happening with Riley is that his insecurities have had a disastrous interaction with Buffy's own personality quirks (and their joint lack of communication). From Riley's viewpoint, Buffy doesn't seem to be letting him or wanting him to provide emotional support. He sees her as personally shutting him out and doesn't realize that it's her usual reaction to emotional stress and that it isn't just him. But he doesn't tell her any of this. Instead he just spins further out of control.

Meanwhile, I actually think that Buffy IS getting the kind of emotional support that she needs from him. Unfortunately she isn't telling him that in any way that he recognizes. Perhaps more understandably, given that she has been preoccupied. And he hasn't mentioned anything about what's bothering him (or mostly not even that anything IS bothering him). Still, Buffy isn't winning any prizes here for communication either.

Buffy: Blindsided first by Spike's revelation and then by Riley's news. Buffy in cold fury mode is more than a little frightening. Has a bit of an epiphany but a little too late.

Xander: Manages to break through Buffy's cold fury mode and get her to consider things. And, no, Xander doesn't think it was all (or even mostly) Buffy's fault. If he was talking to Riley he'd have more than a few things to say about how Riley messed up. But he isn't talking to Riley, he's talking to Buffy and it's Buffy who has a decision to make at that moment.

I like how he then applies what he said to his own relationship.

Spike's obsession continues as he plots successfully to get rid of the competition. Weird sort of Riley/Spike bonding over neither one of them having the sort of relationship that they want.

Buffy's transparent little attempt at verbal camouflage is fun--"a little (pause) bible study".

The others are more in the background. Anya gets some good lines in, such as in the scene with her, Dawn, and Xander. Willow is mostly being supportivey.

A bit of parallelism. Both Buffy and Angel basically steamroll the others into going along with a rash raid.

And we close on Buffy sitting on the steps of her house as Riley rides off in a helicopter.

Reunion: Angel goes further into beige mode.

Interesting that Darla seems a little ambivalent about being a vampire until her first feeding.

Note the rather blatant attempt of the PTB to keep Angel away from W&H. In the actual course of events, the only change that would make is that Angel would NOT be an accomplice to the massacre.

It's entirely possible that the Senior Partners were not actually displeased by the events at Holland's house. They want Angel "dark" and he's definitely taken steps in that direction. Not just the massacre but also cutting himself off from his friends.
